Hi Pat, We are distant cousins. Isaac Shaw and Prudence Merritt are my ggggrandparents also. Mary Ann Shaw and William Havens are my gggrandparents. It is from their daughter Eliza Havens who married William 'Squire' Kelly that I descended, your Elizabeth Havens-Hellems sister apparently. Eliza Havens and Squire Kelly had my ggrandfather John Edwin Kelly who married Alice 'Alma' Matthews and they had my granmother Arlie Eliza Kelly who married my grandfather, Allen Kicksee. There is much information on the Merritts online. They were Loyalists and were in Upper Canada very soon after the American Revolution. Some of Prudence's brothers were in civilian Militia during the War of 1812 and they lived in the Niagara region where much of the War of 1812 was fought. It's fascinating family history! I'm in Southern Ontario myself and have visited Prudence and Isaac Shaw's graves as well as William and Mary Ann Havens' graves. Actually, Prudence's father and mother, Joseph and Mary Merritt are buried in the Merritt Settlement Cemetery near Smithville, Ontario, too. I would be very interested in your Havens information if you could send it. I have pictures of Prudence and Isaac Shaw's graves, if you're interested. They're big files, though. Wonderful to meet a distant cousin! I do hope we can find out more about Isaac Shaw and his family, also. Diane in S.
