The Shaw line originating from the Prince George's County and Charles County, Maryland area is looking for paternal male Shaw descendants to participate in the DNA Shaw Surname project. We are trying to establish proof of lineage for the William and Priscilla Shaw line from southern Maryland. Recently, two Shaw descendants submitted DNA for testing, one from Charles County, MD and one from CA. DNA testing confirmed that they are "cousins," descending from William and Priscilla, through their sons, Luke Lewis Shaw and William S. Shaw. It is believed that William Shaw was born abt 1767 in Maryland and he died about 1821-1822 in Charles County, MD. He married Priscilla (MNU) abt 1785 in Maryland. Priscilla was born abt 1760 in Maryland and died abt 1833 in Nicholas County, KY. After William's death, Priscilla Shaw moved from Charles County, MD, to Nicholas County, KY, to join her son, Luke Lewis Shaw (1796-1878), who was already living in KY by 1815. Priscilla took the four youngest children with her to KY, namely John Anderson Shaw (abt 1806-1881), James Shaw (abt 1810-?), Ann Shaw (abt 1805-1874), and Matilda Shaw (abt 1808-?). It appears the four oldest Shaw children, Sarah (1786-?), Joseph (1786-1865) (twin to Sarah), Samuel (1791-?) and William S. Shaw (1793-1862) stayed behind in Maryland. Joseph Shaw eventually moved to the KY/IN areas, as he died in Ripley County, Indiana in 1865. If we can get more people to participate in the Shaw Surname DNA project, we are hoping to one day find a match even further back than William and Priscilla Shaw, perhaps back to our original presumed ancestry from England, Ireland or Scotland. To accomplish this, we need as many male Shaw descendants as possible who descend from the paternal Shaw side to participate in the DNA matching project. For more information, please go to the Shaw DNA Project page at: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/s/shaw/index.html Once there, you can learn about how DNA testing works, etc. You can click on the "Recruitment" link to learn how to participate. The "Results" link shows the Shaw line participants and matches to date. There is also a "patriarchs" page for posting family trees. If you decide to participate, you will order your DNA test kit directly from the project. The cost per participant is dependent on the number of markers tested, but all tests include an estimate of the Haplogroup (an indication of deep ancestry). It is recommended that you test the largest number of markers that you can afford, however, there is a basic 12 marker test available. It is important for as many Shaw descendants to participate as possible. However, if you believe you are descended from or connected to this specific southern Maryland Shaw line, and you absolutely cannot afford the cost of testing, we have a few Shaw descendants who are willing to assist in paying some of the costs of the testing. If you would like to request financial assistance or sponsorship for DNA testing, please make a request to me, and provide information on your southern Maryland Shaw family connection. Requests for testing sponsorship will be reviewed and considered on a case-by-case basis, and is dependent upon the number of requests we receive, as we have a limited amount of sponsorship monies available. If you wish to contribute to the Shaw grant/sponsorship program to help promote Shaw DNA testing, please let me know. Please consider participating, and please pass this information along to other Shaw relatives who might be interested. Thanks. Denise Shaw dmcshaw@hughes.net
Denise, I just submitted a Y-DNA 67 sample to Family Tree last week and expect the results to be posted by the end on the month. We have several of our related lines back 13 generations and our Shaw line definitely goes back to the 1750-60s in NC. I am originally from Mississippi with numerous relatives in MS, AL, AR, and TX. This Shaw family line goes back through AL, some GA and others SC, TN/ NC, and VA or MD. Our oral history also indicates migrating through VA or MD from Ulster (County Antrim) after arrival in PA. Our Shaw family were allied to and inter-married with the Wyley/ Wylly, Irwin/ Irvine, Miller, Bagwell, Jones, Spiva/ Spivey, Malone and other Orange families back to Old Augusta - now Botetourt and Bedford Counties of VA. I have at least a dozen family lines that were in Old Augusta County, VA by 1735 and later Old Orange County, NC which later split into Caswell/ Persons and Wake/ Durham Counties of NC. They all ended up in Old Washington County, NC (later became TN) following the Revolution. John Henry Shaw was born on the VA and NC line (Caswell County) in 1763. Papa John married Mary Margaret Irwin/ Irvine in Washington County, TN on 11 August 1788 in the area later identified as Cherokee lands in 1790. Consequently, Papa John and Mama Mary moved several times ending up in Shelby County, AL by 1818 where he died. Mama Mary came to MS with her family in 1834 and died in 1853. I am descended from their son, Captain James Washington Shaw, who was an original settler in the Choctaw Cede of MS during 1833. Concerning DNA Testing, I've been looking at this for some time and studying the mutation rates for many markers - all vary at different rates. In order to get back to the Colonial Era of interest with any degree of accurracy, the 25 marker test is probably not sufficient and even the 37 marker test is only marginal for a HaploGroup. I ordered the new Y-DNA 67 marker test for this reason. I'll let you know when the sample is posted. Thanks for all your efforts.
