    1. [SHAW] ATTENTION SHAW FAMILIES: Federal Grant Money for Free Y-DNA Testing

    3. On behalf of Chuck Shaw, Gainesville, VA, the following information is being passed on in hopes of getting as many Shaw descendants as possible to participate in free DNA testing for genealogy research: The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) has received Federal Grant money to provide Y-DNA Testing free of charge to participants. This is actually the 37 Marker Y-DNA test considered the minimum number of markers to obtain subclades and differentiate distinct family groups/lines. Go to their website at www.SMGF.org to sign up for an account and for a free DNA test kit. Also of interest, since Shaw is predominantly Borderer Scots with extensions to the Highlands, Ireland/Ulster, and England/Yorkshire, and normally Haplotype R1b, it is one of the most common types/groups observed and easy to have false mappings between families. I'd suggest we get everyone possible to take the 37 Marker Y-DNA test for free from SMGF and then post their sample numbers from that site to FTDNA where we can conduct more detailed genealogy discussions and other testing for SNPs, 67 Marker Y-DNA, Mt-DNA, etc. SMGF doesn't send all of the other data and proposed Haplos to you, but it is accessible on-line with pedigrees. This would help get as many Shaws tested at 37 Markers as possible, which would then allow other sponsorship of additional testing for 67 Markers, SNPs, research, etc. Please consider taking advantage of this offer of free Y-DNA testing to help prove your Shaw ancestry. 3. I went to the site and checked it out.. It said that you will not receive any results back from the Test.. If that is so how does this work.. since I am female do I have to set the account up in the Male's name that I convince to participate in this ... If I want to see results then do we have to pay for those.. I searched the site over and could not find any explanation.... If I could get several family males to participate could we test for several surnames... I know it said free kits but what about the results. It is also just the 37 marker test. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Denise Shaw" <dmcshaw@hughes.net> To: <MDCHARLE@rootsweb.com>; <SHAW@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 19, 2007 8:34 PM Subject: [SHAW] ATTENTION SHAW FAMILIES: Federal Grant Money for Free Y-DNATesting > On behalf of Chuck Shaw, Gainesville, VA, the following information is > being > passed on in hopes of getting as many Shaw descendants as possible to > participate in free DNA testing for genealogy research: > > > > The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) has received Federal > Grant money to provide Y-DNA Testing free of charge to participants.
