    3. Sandra, The 37 marker test is generally the minimum accepted # of markers to prove a relationship, 36 or 37 of 37 markers, with high probability at 35 of 37 markers and obtain your HaploGroup, etc.. You can pay $189 just for that test. This is a good option for many folks to start at no cost as I stated in my original e-mail, "take the 37 Marker Y-DNA test for free from SMGF and then post their sample numbers from that site to FTDNA where we can conduct more detailed genealogy discussions and other testing for SNPs, 67 Marker Y-DNA, Mt-DNA, etc. since SMGF doesn't send all of the other data and proposed Haplos to you, but it is accessible on-line with pedigrees." In many cases folks will be able to establish alot of realtionships, easily, with the 37 Marker test and pedigrees which you can see on-line at SMGF. I've been looking at many of their Surname and HaploGroups for the past week. Others will want to examine relationships in more detail with the 67 Marker Test, SNP test, etc.. SMGF and FTDNA among others make even more money off of the follow-on and Mt-DNA testing, etc.. You do have to set up the basic 37 Marker Y-DNA test for the male members of your line. Anyone can use the forms of Mt-DNA for maternal lines as I understand it but those are expensive and take time. I started with the 67 Marker Test and just ordered SNP testting for HaploGroup E3b1 when I received the first results last night. It turns out our line has some of the rarest DNA in Scotland. One HaploGroup with 10 distinct SNPs isolated in several regions of the world which makes it easier to trace - if folks participate. Hope this helps.
