Quick background of what we do know: William Henry Shaw Sr., born abt. 1834, died 1907 in Accomack Co., VA. His wife was Tabitha/Tobitha, b. abt. 1848 In Accomack Co., VA. William H. served in the Confederate forces with the 8th Alabama Co. C, which saw most of their fighting in Virginia. We believe this is why he settled in VA after the war and never went back to AL. Most of our Shaw line is still living in Accomack County today. But we do not know William H. Sr.'s ties to Alabama at all - was he born there, who were his parents, siblings? Family "verbal history" has said that our Shaws were from Scotland, but how far back we have no idea. One possibility I'm exploring is that William Henry Sr.'s father is the Wm. Shaw listed in the 1870 Census in Mobile, living with his daughter Margaret Foster along with her husband Wm. F and their children. I've also found who I believe to be this same William Shaw in the 1860 and 1850 Census records, no wife listed, with children including a son named William/W H Shaw whose age fits within the range of the William Henry Shaw Sr. we're researching. If you are descendents of Margaret Shaw Foster and know anything about this William born about 1797 in Scotland, I'd love to hear from you.
