Barbara with her beloved four-legged companions, Oreo and Penny, led an active life. She was born March 18, 1925. During her working career, she was an airline reservationist, a school crossing guard for O'Hara Township, a hostess for the ladies' 20th Century Club and a secretary for Mellon Bank. Following her semi-retirement from Mellon Bank, she continued to work one day a month and attended all retiree events. Be it by land, air or water, Barbara enjoyed her many travels both locally and abroad. She read voraciously. Barbara always had a paperback in her purse waiting for the next opportunity for her to turn the pages. She loved musical theatre and possessed a special fondness for "Forever Plaid" as she had enjoyed this performance more than 40 times and was honored by its cast. Barbara was a faithful member of Waverly Presbyterian Chur! ch and, as a graduate of Peabody High School Class of 1943, she remained active in assisting with the many class reunions, including the preparations for what would have been her 65th. Barbara loved and cherished her family, her friends and especially her dogs. She was passionate about the care and well-being for man's best friend. She was a dedicated volunteer at Animal Friends and supported this organization in anyway that she could. Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Keil; her loving parents, Harold Grant and Norma Jackson Shirk; and her cousin, James Vance. She is survived by her beloved cousins, Jane Bliss and her husband, Ted, of Webster, N.H., John Bowers and his wife, Jeannie, of Winter Park, Fla., William Vance and his wife, Corlyn, of Solana Beach, Calif., and James Vance's wife, Jeanne, of Melbourne, Fla.; friends, Maryellen Mayhall, of Swissvale, and Jean Fulton, of Mt. Lebanon; and friendly neighbors, Mary Stackpole, Monica Nogueira, Badie and Anne Marie Morsi, all of Squirrel Hill. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the BURTON L. HIRSCH FUNERAL HOME INC., 2704 Murray Ave., Squirrel Hill, 412-521-2600. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Homewood Cemetery, 1599 South Dallas Ave., Squirrel Hill. Interment is private. Arrangements by H. SAMSON INC., 412-621-2800.
