Viola; The family assumes, Irish, and the census showed that Esther stated she was born in Ireland in 1810. However, we do not know the name of Mr. Shaw....the story is that her family did not approve of him but they married anyway. When they left for America, her family came to the ship and and told her to hold out her hands and they filled her hands with money. They did continue to correspond because she was asked to come home for a visit with the children and she refused to go because she was afraid they wouldn't let her come back. In the Logan County, IL land sales, an Esther Shaw bought quite a few parcels and there was also a Samuel Shaw purchasing.... but I have never found Esther's husband's name. Perhaps Mr. Shaw was English and that was the reason her family did not like him???? Nancy Casteel King CASTEEL, UNDERWOOD, BACON, MCGARVEY, PHILLIPS, SHAW GUNN
See if you can find out what religion they were. Many Scots were moved to Ireland to help convert the Catholics to the "Church Of Ireland" (Episcopal) and Shaw is originally a highland Scots name. Perhaps they didn't like her marrying out of her faith.
