On another list, a query was placed from Africa about where one might find English place names. There are three good ones that I know of: 1) Old English Maps, an on-line site for the searching of mainland England/Scotland. Alphabetised search is by shire, then by place name. Ordinance maps of the locale can be printed: http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ 2) On-Line search engine for England and Wales yielding County/Shire, place names (all alphabetised), and corresponding registration districts. If you are computer-savvy, you can make it a local application, and search the appropriate page with an editor instead of waiting for a time slice: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/civreg/places/ 3) Search engine + data base yielding Parish locations. The author also says it will print maps, but I haven't figured that part out yet. This is an application that is free and can be downloaded to your computer, so you do not have to go online. http://www.dmbennett.freeserve.co.uk/ParLoc.htm Good luck!
