Kathy, My Shaws in Mahaska Co. originated with Joseph & Highly Duckworth Shaw who left MD for IA after their marriage in 1839. They were in Washington Co. in 1840 Census & settled near Beacon in Mahaska Co. in 1842 or 3 after the Indian lands were opened. They had 10 children: Sidney, Harriet, Columbus, Alonzo, Augustus, Americus, Susan, Lawson, Hester & Joseph. After the Civil War, Joseph's brother, Thompson Shaw, went to IA settling in the New Sharon area. I believe there were other unrelated Shaw lines as well.
