I think the message was that the English, like us Americans, are really "mongrels' with ancestry from all over. That is probably a very good thing. My Shaws came from Ireland, and before that Scotland, but they married women whose families came from several different places. Because some of them were born in Ireland doesn't mean they were "pure" Irish, any more than the fact that two of my children were born in Germany makes them of German descent.
