His wife was listed only as C., age 43. They had 3 children all born in NY: Catherine age 13, John age 10 and George age 3. The Dodge County, WI 1860 census has John, now age 68 and still a farmer. His wife was named as Crissiene, age 52 and only 2 children were listed, John J. age 20 and George W. age 17. Catherine must have been out of the home by this time perhaps married and I have not found her back. John J. born 23 Apr 1840 and Jerusha Alice Wheeler born 31 Jan 1847 in Seneca Falls, NY were married 30 Jul 1863. They had 4 children by the time they left Rubican in Dodge County and moved to Rock Elm Township, Pierce County, WI. The children were Eva Isola (Mrs. Charles Ducklow), Mary (Mrs. Sam Moats), Ida Elmira (Mrs. James Meeham) and Alice Adeal (Mrs. William H. Smith). The family moved to Rock Elm Township in 1873 and lived there until 1899. Two more children, Emma Irene (Mrs. Arthur H. Kelly) and Bertha (Mrs. John S. Henry) were born in Rock Elm. Jerusha’s family came from Cranfield, Bedforshire, England to New England in 1638 and settled first in Concord, MA and later in Fairfield, CT. Old newspaper articles from 1903 and 1904 tell about John J. being lost while returning to his claim on the Bear River about 30 miles west of International Falls, MN. His remains were found the next spring and were buried on his claim. It would be interesting to know why and old man would take up a claim so far from Pierce County. John J.’s younger brother George W. Shaw and his wife Laura Thompson came to Rock Elm Township in 1872 from Dodge County, WI. Their son John was born before they came to Pierce County. George, Alma, Julia and Fredrick were all born after the move north. Crisiania, the mother of Catherine, John J. and George W. moved to Pierce County to be near her children sometime prior to 1879. Her husband was older and I feel his death may be the reason for her to move. Pierce county death records show this different name for her and her birth was 1807 in Vermont, the daughter Nathaniel Churchill. She died in Rock Elm April 30, 1879 and is buried in Popular Hill Cemetery. Looking for information on John Sr.’s. Irish birth, information on daughter Catherine and other connections to the family.
