I have read a reference (unconfirmed) that says his parents were John and Elizabeth Shaw. There is also a Moses Shaw who came to PA in 1735, m Deborah Webb in Lurgan in 1718. In Quaker records there is a reference to Jonas Shaw, father of Moses. In the Belfast Newsletter there is an article about the death of Jonas Shaw in Hillsborough, Co Down. All this is confusing........my line traces to Samuel, but I have a feeling Moses may have been a brother (Samuel named a son Moses). Hillsborough and Lisburn are very close together (in fact I believe they are in the same parish--Blaris-- even though they are in different counties). Please keep in contact since we seem to be searching in the same area of Ireland. Were your Shaws Quaker in America? I believe Patrick Shaw is mentioned in Charles Hanna"s book,,,,,,,,it is a free database on ancestry.com--can't remember the actual reference, but I remember the name. Carol in MO

    3. Carol, I will check out your names. My Shaws were not Quakers that I know of, but one (my gggggrandfather William) married a Quaker descendant by the name of Sarah Job(e) on 24 May 1787 in Guilford County, NC. William (supposedly son of Patrick) served in the military, so he certainly wasn't much of a Quaker. His record reads as follows: Fall 1775- William Shaw entered military service in Guilford County, North Carolina under the command of Col. James Martin, Col. Com. John Paisley, Lt. Col. Captain Arthur Forbis, Lt.William Wiley and Ensign William Gilmore were his Company Officers. He also served a second term under the same officers. On his first term against the Cherokees, he was drafted. He volunteered for the others. NATFB 1776- William Shaw served his third tour against the Cherokee Indians under the command of Brigadier General Rutherford under the same officers mentioned above. Ibid Late 1779- Served a tour of three months in the capacity of Orderly Sergeant in Captain Smith Moore's Company under the command of Col. Isaacs. Chisley Barnes was one of William's Subaltern Officers. He was principally engaged in ranging through Randolph County, Caraway Mountains, Peedee, Montgomery County and other counties. Source: Ibid 1780-Again served a short time before Gen. Gates defeat at Camden, 16 Aug 1780. William served a fifth tour of duty under the command of Capt. Whitsell, which took them to Suffolk, VA for arms and ammunition. They marched directly to Halifax, attached to Col.Long's unit and escorted other wagons proceeding to Suffolk, VA. After obtaining arms and ammunition, they returned to North Carolina by the same route, and repeated this process between two and three months. 3. I have unconfirmed information on a Samuel Shaw, son of John/ Patrick? (one source says his name was John, one says Patrick) Shaw b. abt 1700 in Ireland as follows: Samuel Shaw Father: John ( Patrick?) Shaw Sr (abt 1700-) Mother: ? Individual Facts Chr 22 Jun 1721 in Presbyterian Church in Drumbo, County Down, North Ireland Death 11 Jan 1802 in Guilford Co., NC This would make him the brother of Patrick Shaw b. 18 Sep 1720 in Drumbo, County Down Ireland, who married Nancy Ashley in 1756 in same place and died 11 Jan 1802 in Guilford County, NC. I do not have a listing for Moses Shaw. Since these two brothers are supposed to have been christened in the Presbyterian Church, I believe they came here due to the repression of Presbyterians and Catholics in Ireland at that time and the unsuccessful uprising against the English. This family may have no relation to the ones you are seeking, since the brothers seem to have come together, bringing their families with them, to Guilford County, NC. It is possible that other Shaws were with them, since there seem to be others looking for Shaws in Guilford County at about this time. It is also possible that there were siblings and children I do not have listed. I have the children of Patrick and Nancy Ashley as: John b. 1756, William b.1758, Hugh b. 1772, Elizabeth b. 1776, Polly, and Nancy. A number of them were born in Ireland. Hugh Shaw married Elizabeth Finley. I have no spouses listed for the others. I received this information very recently and cannot vouch for the sources and accuracy, but I hope it gives someone a lead which could result in help for all of us.
