Wanda, I just received by mail a xerox copy of the will of Patrick Shaw of Guilford County, NC dated "February Court(?) 1802". I would guess that someone wrote it out copied as closely as possible from the original since the signatures all seem to be in the same hand writing and the only signature that says "his mark" is Patrick's. However, I can make out part of a handwritten number in the top right-hand corner and it seems to be a page in a book that has been copied. A file # is also written at the top left. As soon as I can type it up, I will let the list know that it is available and I will either try to post it to the list, or e-mail it to those interested on request. It may not be too easy, since the handwriting, while flowing and flowery, is not always easy to read. Ruth from Colorado who sent it to me is trying to track down the exact sources of this and other material she sent me. Will pass that on, too, when I get it. Correction: the will was dated in the text ! January 1802. It was proven in open court in Feb 1802. I have transcribed the will to the best of my ability. Since it is short, I am including it in this post: Transcribed by Velma Shaw Beale from a Xerox copy In the top right hand corner: 3.57(? the last two digits are very unclear) Patrick Shaw File# 0352. In the name of God, amen- I Patrick Shaw of the County of Guilford & State of North Carolina, being of sound & perfect mind & memory, (?), do this first day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight-hundred & two, make & publish this my last will & testament in manner following - Item: I resign my soul to God & my body to the grave - Item - I allow all my just debts & funeral expenses first to be paid out of my personal property, which property I allow to be sold. - Item - I give & bequeath to my oldest son, John Shaw, the sum of five shillings - To my second son, William Shaw, the sum of five shillings - Item - I give and bequeath to my son, Hugh Shaw - the sum of five shillings The residue of my estate I wish to be divided into five shares ?:which shares are to be divided in the following manner: I ? give to my beloved wife, Nancy Shaw one share, I give and bequeath to my eldest daughter, Betsy Shaw two shares, I give and bequeath to my daughter, Polly S.lotte/or dotte? one share, I give & bequeath to my daughter Nancy Shaw one share - And hereby make & ordain my dearly beloved wife, Nancy Shaw Executrix & my worthy friend James S.
