Just a note about William Shaw. Apparently there were numerous William Shaw's. My William was born in 1759, served in the Revolutionary War, lived most if not all of his life in Marion County, SC, had numerous children there and died in 1863 at the age of 103. He was married to Frances Leggett and their first child was a son, John. Also, there was a heriditary kidney disorder passed down to some of the Shaw decendants, I believe from John Shaw's wife whose name was Ann Exum. (Geneology can be confusing can't it!) -------------- Original message -------------- From: mtamboutdoors@att.net > Hi, > There are a couple of errors and I hope that you will correct them...thanks. > William B. You might do it the hard way and start looking through the 1850 census records for Texans named Shaw that were born in Texas, just to narrow down your search. Is there an 1840 census for Texas? Have you looked for birth, death, marriage records in county courthouses? I have a Thomas Jefferson Shaw who was in Parker County, Texas, but he didn't get there until 1854. He had a son James, but that son was James T., and of course the parents wouldn't have been born in Texas. Thomas Jefferson Shaw had a brother Granville who was in Texas starting in 1836, but I don't know who his children were. Chances are he had a James, though, because their father's name was James and they all named a child after him. Again, the parents wouldn't have been born in Texas. Beverly Park Peavler P.S. Hi, There are a couple of errors and I hope that you will correct them...thanks. William B. Shaw born March 24, 1801 in South Carolina is my gr-gr-gr grandfather and HE IS the one who married Jinnat "Jane", also called "Jennie" McCorkle born Feb. 18. 1802 in South Carolina and daughter of Stephen McCorkle and Mary Patterson. William is the son of William Shaw who fought in the Rev. War and was of Irish descent. I know this from Shaw family Bible records. I know that my gr-gr-gr grandparents lived 20 miles outside of Charleston, SC and had several children there before they migrated to Parke County, Indiana around 1830 or so. Hi, I'm still looking for the parents of Catherine Vance who married Nathan Shaw. He was born in 1790 and she was born in 1789. Here is the situation.....all the records I find (including those from Fayette Co. books) show that she is Catherine Vance, however, these records also state that she is the daughter of Crawford Vance and Susan Clayton. The census records, etc.. show Crawford's birthdate as 1806 (approx) so it's impossible that he is her father. After trying to find this Catherine Vance for 30 years or more, I am now at the conclusion that maybe Nathan was married to a Catherine by another surname and that her last name was not Vance. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks for your help. Connie Friendship is like peeing your pants: everyone can see it, but only you can feel the true warmth. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
My ggrandfather James A. "Jim" Shaw born 1850/51 in Texas IAW 1880 census for Cooke Co. TX. It also states that his father & mother were born in TX. He married Malissa Aplin & they had 3 children before they split up. Family history says James & family came to Oklahoma where he & Malissa split up. Sher remarried to george Humphries & they resided in Pauls Valley, OK til their deaths. George & Malissa had 2 daughters & they were raised along with my grandfather John W. & his bro. David. I've searched every known source, roots, genforum, anc. family history etc & come up empty. Don't think DNA would help as my mother was the Shaw no my father. Any help, clues etc would be greatly appreceated. jesse mccullar, roho29@allegiance.tv
Hi, Bille. For more information, please go to the Shaw DNA Project page at: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/s/shaw/index.html Once there, you can learn about how DNA testing works, etc. You can click on the "Recruitment" link to learn how to participate. The "Results" link shows the Shaw line participants and matches to date. There is also a "patriarchs" page for posting family trees. If you decide to participate, you will order your DNA test kit directly from the project. The cost per participant is dependent on the number of markers tested, but all tests include an estimate of the Haplogroup (an indication of deep ancestry). It is recommended that you test the largest number of markers that you can afford, however, there is a basic 12 marker test available. It is important for as many Shaw descendants to participate as possible. If you believe you are descended from or connected to this specific southern Maryland Shaw line, and you absolutely cannot afford the cost of testing, we have a few Shaw descendants who are willing to assist in paying some of the costs of the testing. If you would like to request financial assistance or sponsorship for DNA testing, please make a request to me, and provide information on your southern Maryland Shaw family connection. Requests for testing sponsorship will be reviewed and considered on a case-by-case basis, and is dependent upon the number of requests we receive, as we have a limited amount of sponsorship monies available. If you wish to contribute to the Shaw grant/sponsorship program to help promote Shaw DNA testing, please let me know. Please consider participating, and please pass this information along to other Shaw relatives who might be interested. Thanks. Hi Billie: I found your query on rootsweb list and I too seek Shaw info - have DNA kit just never sent it in yet. When I swab my father it will be returned to Family Tree DNA in Houston TX. They sent me the kit for free and I return it with info and swabs. Cost is under$200 depending on the DNA count you want. See the site - you can hit SHAW DNA list and see others who have taken the test - and same for other last names, like McNeill. I am getting the 25 (y-dna25) test - cost with tax in canada ws $152.. It says nothing of shipping costs for my results so I gather they pay postage as it would just be written results. Colonsay website has some great info on Angus Shaw and his father Dushee. It lists his mother as well and some siblings who ARE known and suggests others who are not known to be as yet. I think I too might fit in to this particular tree but not sure. www.colonsay.org or google colonsay and you will see a link to a colonsay site - scroll to left top under History and hit the genealogy button, and one name studies, etc.... You will find the article on Angus there. Please keep in touch. I am assuming your relations are from the Southern states. Perhaps if we could get more Shaw trees we think we are related to to post results or take tests, we would all solve a large mystery - as there is always more for the next generation to dig up - lol Regards Sherri

Numerous Shaw Cousins, I did not expect quite the response my previous e-mail/ posting today created wrt Y-DNA Testing. It was quite gratifying to see several postings from other Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi Shaws including some new participants. Rather than attempting to answer a number of you individually since I depart on travel early in the morning, I've attached the cut-down version of our MS Shaw Family line as we know it below - there are at least 3 distinct groups of Shaws in Mississippi. We hope the Y-DNA results will help resolve several different but possibly related Shaw lines in early TN and Colonial VA. Apparently, we've already discovered a Miller who married into the Wyley family living next to several Shaws prior to 1800 is probably a Shaw by all indications, another reason for the 67 marker DNA Test since the 25 marker test is not conclusive. Hope this helps answer a few questions for some of you and any info welcome. Perhaps the DNA testing will pay off. Thanks. Chuck Shaw COL. William or John Shaw, PVTs in the Virginia Militia during the French and Indian War under Captain Talbot and others, later PVTs in the Virginia and North Carolina Volunteer Militias: Majority of evidence points to either William or John Shaw born about 1733/ 35 to John Shaw in Augusta County, VA (Probably one of several John and William Shaws who migrated from Ulster via Pennsylvania with the Irvives/ House of Drum, Wyleys, Crawfords, Millers, etc. or possibly John Shaw and Elizabeth Jenkins of Charles County, MD - still not verified). These Shaws and extended family ended up in Augusta County, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, which became Botetourt, Bedford, Lunenberg, etc. counties migrating to Halifax County, Virginia as well as Orange/ Caswell and Wake/ Durham Counties, North Carolina by 1760. Our oral history also indicates they were Borderer Scots allied to the Irvines of Bonshaw, Johnstones, Wyleys, and Crawfords originally from Dumfriesshire. However, they were also seafarers who left those lands in the 16th Century with the Irvines/ Sons of Drum to go to Antrim as well as many of the Western Isles often running from the English, etc. and hiding for some time on the remote Hebrides and Isle of Jura. They eventually migrated to PA and through VA or MD from County Antrim shortly after the turn of the 18th Century. They were then and our family remains devout Presbyterians. They fought on both sides of the Regulator Uprising in NC, 1768-1771. Captain Robert B. Schaw was a militia commander supporting the crown at the Battle of Alamance while several other Shaws, Wyleys, Spivas, Merrills, etc. were all Regulators. I am a direct descendant of Sgt James Wyley who died of wounds received in this conflict/ pneumonia and Captain Benjamin Merrill who was hung, drawn, and quartered by Royal Governor Tryon in 1771. Mama Mary Margaret was born about 1765 in Halifax County, VA and died about 1853 in Winston County, MS. She is believed to be the daughter of either James, Joseph, or William Irvine - brothers from Southside Virginia. Mama Mary Margaret is buried in the Old Shaw-Crawford Cemetery, often called Blackwood Cemetery, in the Choctaw National Forest (CNF), Choctaw County, MS near the Shaw family as well as long time friends/ in-laws Peter and Elizabeth Crawford. John Henry Shaw and several of his sons/ nephews are credited with exploring the Tennessee Valley Divide and Mississippi Territory (now Alabama) prior to the War of 1812 and discovering/ blazing the Genery's Gap of North-Central Alabama prior to the War of 1812. Children: I. Joseph J. Shaw, M, born during September 1789 in Washington County NC/ TN and died before1860 in Oktibbeha County, MS. Daddy Joe Shaw may be the eldest son or a nephew. II. William W. Several other sons are often credited to Papa John and Mama Mary since they helped raise their orphaned nephews/ nieces, children of James Shaw, in SC and AL who migrated with them. 3. James Washington Shaw, Private in the US Volunteers during the War of 1812/ Creek Indian Wars, Captain in the Alabama Volunteer Militia, County Supervisor and Commissioner in Alabama and Mississippi: James Washington "Big Jim" Shaw was born 21 May 1794 to John Henry Shaw and Mary Margaret Irwin/ Irvine/ Ervin Shaw in the Chester District of South Carolina. James served as a Private in the Militia Scout/ Rangers against the British Kempers and Creek Indians during latter stages of the War of 1812. He was also a Sergeant of Scouts under his father and Major Sam Dale against the Creeks during the first two Indian Wars in Alabama. Jim along with his father, brothers, and pioneers such as Sam and Jim Dale, Thomas and Peter Malone, as well as John Amory/ Emory traded with numerous Indian tribes and scouted most of the Alabama Territory. Jim and his brothers along with other comrades in arms subsequently occupied lands in Shelby and Jefferson Counties of Alabama even before the Treaty of Fort Jackson. Many returned to South Carolina and Georgia to marry in 1818 and 1819 and immediately brought their brides and families to the rich Cahaba Valley of Alabama, near present day Birmingham. The first confirmed record of Jim Shaw in Shelby County, Alabama is on the January Term, County Court, in 1819. Jim Shaw subsequently became a Supervisor in Shelby County from 1819-1823 and later a Commissioner for Shelby County from 1823-1825. He was relieved of his Commissioner duties in 1825 due to his failure to act/ absence while serving with the Alabama Militia scouting the Great Tennessee Road, Great Military Road/ Noxubee Trail, and Choctaw land. I'm afraid I don't know anything further about James J. Assuming the children were listed in birth order, he would have been younger than Thomas Jefferson Shaw, so born after 1819, probably in, say, the mid 1820s. No spouse is listed for him. He must not have gone to Texas, because the ones who did are identified (Granville, Thomas J., John G.). These Shaws were in Bedford and Marshall counties, TN, and also in Hardeman County, TN.
