I will list what I know on here and if any one can connect, email me at medlar@umbc.edu and I will email you a copy of the picture for identification. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: dmcshaw Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.shaw/3812.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: We are trying to find our Shaw ancestors. My husband's Shaw line is from Charles County, Maryland. We have been unable to find the connection to the correct Shaw family who first settled in this area. We theorize that our Shaw's must have settled here in the late 1700's/early 1800's (maybe from VA, New England, England, Ireland, or Scotland?). There are some unique names in our line, such as Elkanah, Arosia, Alphonsus, Ecelia, Rhoda, Columbus, Berry, Millard, and Ovid. These names do not seem common to the old Charles County, MD records, but I have found some of these names with Shaw's in the New England area. We think my husband's gggrandfather, William S. Shaw (b abt 1793 - d 12 Apr 1862), was descended from William Shaw (b abt 1767 - d abt 1820 Charles County, MD) and Pricilla (MNU) Shaw (b abt 1818 - d 1835 Nicholas Co, KY), but there have been different theories offered as to who William S. Shaw's father was (possibly James, Josiah, or John Shaw, instead of William). There are births of, who we think are 3 of William's siblings, recorded in the church register of King George's Parish/Piscataway Parish/St. John's Broad Creek Parish (all names for the same church), as children of William and Priscilla, Joseph (b 2 Jun 1786, Luke Lucis (sp Lewis) (b 2 Aug 1796), and Sarah (twin to Joseph) (b 2 Jun 1786). This is why we believe his parents were William and Priscilla Shaw. William S. Shaw's first wife was named Milley MNU (b. abt 1780 - d. 25 Oct 1848). After Milley's death, William S. Shaw married Innocence B. Wilkerson (b. abt 1818 - d. 18 Jun 1903) on 6 Sept 1849 at St. Paul's Piney Parish in Charles County, MD. William S. Shaw served in the War of 1812. We just recently found out Innocence's maiden name was Wilkerson from her War of 1812 Widow's Pension File, but we are not sure of the names of her parents, but we think her father may have been John B. Wilkerson. Innocence and William Shaw are buried at St Paul's Piney Parish Episcopal Church in Waldorf, MD. After William's death in 1862, Innocence remarried to Dennis Gates on 25 Jan 1868. Innocence B. Wilkerson and William S. Shaw had the following children: (1) William Columbus Shaw (1850-1930), m. Victorine Lucy Willett (1862-1919) (2) Unknown Son Shaw (abt 1852) (3) Joseph Berry Shaw (1854-1894), m. Elizabeth Kate Willett (1857-1916) (my husband's ggrandparents) (4) Walter Millard Shaw (1856-1933), m. Maria Frances Hicks (1859-1924) (5) Mary R. Shaw (1857-), m. ? Marshall E. Boarman (1954-) (6) Elkanah Arosia Shaw (1859-1898), m. Virgie Eugenia Robey (1871-1958) We seem to have a disconnect at William and Priscilla Shaw. In my research at the College of Southern Maryland Studies Center, I found some letters written to the Charles County Historical Society from a Carol Lee Moore back in the 1970's and 1980's requesting information on this very couple. Carol Moore stated she had original letters in her possession dated 1837-1867 written from Joseph Shaw in Indiana to his brother, my husband's gggrandfather, William S. Shaw, here in Charles County, MD. From the content of the letters, she was able to determine that Joseph, Samuel, William S., Luke Lewis, Sarah, John Anderson, Ann, Matilda, and James Shaw were siblings. Priscilla and William Shaw are believed to be their parents. Sometime between the 1820 Census and 1824, Priscilla Shaw moved to Nelson County, KY to live near her son, Luke Lewis Shaw, and took her four youngest children with her (James, Matilda, John, and Ann). In 1824, in Nicholas County, KY, Priscilla Shaw gave permis! sion for her daughter, Matilda, to marry. She is shown on the 1830 census living next to her son, Luke Lewis Shaw. She died there sometime between 1830 and 1840. But, I still don't know her maiden name, or the names of her or William Shaw's parents. DNA testing has recently proven that Myrle Shaw (living in California) descended from Luke Lewis Shaw, and my husband, Ken Shaw (living here in Charles County), descended from William S. Shaw, were related. This proves that Luke Lewis and William S. were indeed brothers, descending from the same father. I was able to track down the family of Carol Lee Moore but, unfortunately, she was killed in a car accident in 2002. Her daughter said that, after her death, some of her genealogy information was redistributed to other family members. She was going to confer with her father to figure out how much they still had in their possession and to whom they sent the rest to try to find any Shaw related letters and photos for us. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will be able to recover these important letters, as they will hold many clues to us here in Charles County. We would be most familiar with the names and landmarks mentioned in the letters, and that should help provide the! clues we need to conduct further research. She hasn't gotten back to me yet, though. We also found a note in my husband's elderly aunt's personal affects after her death that said: "John Shaw, came to Lancaster Co, VA in 1705. He was surgeon to Capt. Robert Tayloe of London, brother of the second William Tayloe." We are not sure if this has any significance to our Shaw line or not. But, since we have not been successful in matching this line to other Shaw's in Charles County, we wondered whether our William and Pricilla Shaw came from another country, state or county. Do you have any Shaw family information that matches up with our Shaw line from Charles County, MD? I'd be happy to exchange information. Denise C. I am a Mississippi Shaw descended from these lines. We've been trying to unravel the numerous brothers and/ or cousins as well as incorrect associations with Cape Fear Highlanders in North Carolina a long time. Some of John Baptist Shaw's children, Samuel Hugh Shaw and Aley Shaw Brasfield-Lynn, were "the cousins" living in Noxubee County, MS. There is alot of oral history such as the story of "The Four Brothers" and a couple of family history documents you'd be interested in seeing. We are also trying to get the Shaw DNA Project rolling in order to deconflict many of the multiple Shaw lines in VA, NC, SC as well as validate some of the oral stories which appear to be true. The DNA results were surprising and useful. We need more male participants for Y-DNA tracing. This Shaw family line goes back through AL, some GA and others SC, TN/ NC, and VA or MD. Our oral history also indicates migrating through VA or MD from Ulster (County Antrim) after arrival in PA. Our Shaw family were allied to and inter-married with the Wyley/ Wylly, Irwin/ Irvine, Miller, Bagwell, Jones, Spiva/ Spivey, Malone and other Orange families back to Old Augusta - now Botetourt and Bedford Counties of VA. I have at least a dozen family lines that were in Old Augusta County, VA by 1735 and later Old Orange County, NC which later split into Caswell/ Persons and Wake/ Durham Counties of NC. They all ended up in Old Washington County, NC (later became TN) following the Revolution. John Henry Shaw was born on the VA and NC line (Caswell County) in 1763. Papa John married Mary Margaret Irwin/ Irvine in Washington County, TN on 11 August 1788 in the area later identified as Cherokee lands in 1790. Consequently, Papa John and Mama Mary moved several times ending up in Shelby County, AL by 1818 where he died. Mama Mary came to MS with her family in 1834 and died in 1853. I am descended from their son, Captain James Washington Shaw, who was an original settler! in the Choctaw Cede of MS during 1833." After Joseph Berry Shaw's death, Elizabeth Kate Willett married Robert M. O'Keefe in 1899. We are at a brick wall trying to prove the parentage of William S. Shaw, as well as his first wife, Milley (MNU). We have found no definitive proof as to William S. Shaw's father's name (perhaps William, John, James or Josiah Shaw), but his mother is shown as Pricilla (MNU). We believe they were all born and raised in Charles County. All of our Shaw family seemed to have attended St. Paul's Piney Parish Episcopal Church, and many are buried there. In my research at the Southern Maryland Studies Center at CSM, I found several letters written to the Charles County Historical Society in 1975 and 1979 from a Carol Lee Montgomery Moore (Mrs. Robert L. Moore), who was a grandaughter to John Anderson Shaw, one of William S. Shaw's brothers, seeking information on William S. Shaw. She stated she had in her possession original letters written by one of William's brothers, Joseph Shaw in Indiana, to the William S. Shaw family members in Charles County, MD, spanning 1837-1867. References in the letters concern "Henry Bean's family, who is running Aunt Actone's farm, where is Cousin Betsy Shaw living, how are the Beans and Owens, how is Beantown and the tobacco market?" I have found out that Mrs. Moore is deceased and the letters were given to other family members, but have not been able to contact them to obtain copies.
