They ran the Shaw and Powell Camping Company that took famous people like the Rockfellers, etc through Yellowstone park. They had permanent camp sites in the park replete with candy-stripped tents. These Shaw's wound up in Livingston. Amos Shaw was an active politician. I have all genealogy on the Livingston and Gardner Shaw's. They hearld from Amos Shaw who came out to Yellowstone in 1895. My grandfather Ray Shaw settled in Butte in 1908. sincerely, glenn shaw

    1. Re: [SHAW-L] Re:How to Compute a Date of Birth
    2. Eugene Hubbard
    3. I'm sorry to have taken so long to answer, I've been away. Most genealogists and many amateurs are aware that there were, over a period of time, several calendars in use. In the American colonies, the OLD STYLE calendar was used until an official cutoff date, when a NEW STYLE was to be put in operation. There are several problems associated with Old and New Calendars, not the least of which was that there was not a synchronous change from one to the other. It was left to the individual town clerk - church registrar to make the changeover. To make it worse, since the change was ordered by the Catholic Pope Gregory, England and the colonies refused to change for decades after other parts of the world did. Thirdly, the Quakers, where they could, continued to use the Old Style calendar, with their own peculiar modifications, even after England and the Colonies did change (Nantucket Island dates are especially suspect). The old style calendar year began and ended in March, which is why some years are entered as say, 1699/1700 during the months of "January" to nearly "April". Additionally, days were "lost", as the calendar was adjusted forward one time only to account for previously unaccounted for time. I am not being more specific because I leave well enough alone. I cite the OLD STYLE calendar notation as (O.S.) when it is given, and the NEW STYLE (N.S.) when it is given during a lifetime that spans both calendars. Furthermore, I think most people in early times did not have the ability to calculate accurately - to the day - the length of a person's life, not to mention that they neither read nor wrote. There are many good printed genealogies and several web sites which discuss the intricacies of the two calendar systems or provide conversions. Several of the good genealogies I have run across forget to mention the dropped days, and most web sites provide an inaccurate conversion! To do it right takes a complicated formula with conditions, but again, the end result will be totally dependent upon the accuracy of the starting year-month-day information. Lastly, I seriously doubt that the simplistic formula you cited will take into consideration leap years. If you, or others, persist in making estimated dates from grave stone information, or convert dates from one system to another, and pass that information along without some form of qualification as to the source date and the method of calculation, then there will be absolute chaos to follow. One need only peruse FTM CD's and LDS records to see what has happened as amateurs continue to misread/misinterpret basic information and make other gratuitous errors. Try this web site for an explanation of old style calendar notation: http://www.monticello.org/resources/life/old_style.html 'Gene Hubbard Shirley A Scott wrote: > I'm not sure what you mean by "old style calendar". 3. My gggrandfather John Shaw had a brother George Shaw. Do not know if he came to America when John did tho. But John had a son Samuel who had a daughter Sarah. But this Sarah married Wesley T Foster in Stark County,IL. In seeing Samuel and Sarah together made me think of George. Maybe no connection but thought i would send this in. Thanx. Viola.
