    3. The older generations of your Shaws are very interesting. Here is some more grist to add to that mill. Our Shaw line looks like: Generation 1: Mervil Shaw - b. 1914 in Washington State Generation 2: Jesse Alfred Shaw, Jr. - b. 1855 in Crawford County, WI d. 1927 Washington State Generation 3: Jesse Alfred Shaw b. 1810 Ohio d. 1862 Indiana circumstantial evidence suggests his father was: Generation 4: Patrick Shaw b. 1777 Iredell Cty, N.C. d. 1829 Wayne Cty, Indiana Generation 3: John Shaw b. 1732 (conflicting locations) d. 1823, Warren county, OH There are conflicting reports from different grandchildren of John Shaw. One says he and Margaret Kelley were from Scotland and married there before immigrating. A second grandchild reports that the original Shaw to the America's was Patrick Shaw in 1734 and that he had four sons, John who settled in Maine, William who settled in New York, James who went to Ohio and Patrick who went to North Carolina. This account says that the original Patrick was from Ireland and his wife Jane from Scotland. The other family researchers, who have spent much more time on this than I, have not been able to make any connections older than John and a land grant he received in Iredell County, NC in 1785. John picked up and moved his entire family to Warren County, Ohio in 1795. Clearly, if the family moved to America in 1734, this John would have been a tot at the time. If this makes any connection with your lines, we'd love to share more information.

    1. [SHAW] William S Shaw b1807
    2. Just thought I might try the list again since there has been so much activity lately... I am looking for William Sandford (Sanford) Shaw of Wake County, NC.  Had at least one brother Peyton R. Shaw that I know of, probably more siblings.  Have lots of info on William and his family, will, etc.  He married Sarah (Sallie) Massey from Anderson County, SC (have lots of info on her side), but cannot find his mother/father and other sibling info.  He was born 30 May 1807 in Wake County, NC and died 6 April 1888 in Anderson County, SC.  This is my ggg-Grandfather.  William and Sarah had the following children between 7 April 1830 and 1854 - Silas Peyton (Peton), Louisa, Jane, Emily, William F., Melinda, Martha, Letitia, James L., Nancy L., Alex and Joseph.  Silas Peton was my gg-Grandfather.  These children dispersed from SC to Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.  Have info on who they married, their children, etc.   Like I said I have lots of information from William Sandford on down, but I have just hit a brick wall when it comes to going back any farther than William Sandford Shaw. Any help is greatly appreciated! CShaw

    3. Thanks, Geordie, you are, of course, correct. Another point worth keeping in mind: John Shaw of Tordarroch, Chief of Clan Shaw, spoke at Williamsburg a few years ago and told how his ancestor had been deported after the 1715. He spent 11 years indentured in North Carolina, then several more years earning his passage back to Scotland. So not all those sold in America remained! 1. [SHAW] Re: JAMES and WILLIAM SHAW - 1718 MD.
    2. I also descend from William and Margaret Strong Shaw of Md. Walker Co. GA Heritage Book has several Shaw families. William sailed from Portsmouth, England and settled in Maryland. There he married to Margaret Strong, sister of Christopher Strong. He made his will 4 Apr 1718 and it was probated 27 Jun 1718. (Abstract of Maryland Wills). he mentions wife Margaret, sons William, Christopher and his youngest son James. He left estates in Great Britian and America. James Shaw, son of William and Margaret was born April 1718 MD. He married Margaret Thompson whose father was William Thompson of prince George, MD. James was a member of the Colonial Militia of Md and land proprietor (abstract from MD Wills). He made his will in Md on 13 Nov 1780 and it was probated on 21 Nov 1780. He names daughters Nancy, Sarah, Martha and Jane, and sons John, William, James and grandson William. Here is where there is some confusion in the Heritage Book. One article said James, the youngest son of William, married a Jane Shaw. I do not have access to the Maryland Wills book. Can someone clarify? They lived in Nantoscoake, Dorchester Co. MD. Did James the youngest son of William, marry a Jane or Margaret Thompson, or possibly both? I then descend from John Shaw, son of James, the youngest son of William. He was born in MD 29 Jan 1763 and died in Greene Co. GA Jan 1848. He married 1786 to Mary Waggoner, they had 9 children. He served in the Revolution with the NC Militia. He settled in Georgia and established a working plantation of 300 ac. in 1786. His part of Greene Co. later became Warren Co. GA. This Heritage Book give lots of descendents of 2 of John's sons who came into Walker Co. GA, Amos b 1789 m Sara Maxey and George b 1796 m Jane Patterson. I do have proofs for my lineage through John and Mary Waggoner as I joined the DAR through that line. But do not have any records beforehand. Alicyne Roth, Kensington (Walker Co.) GA

    3. Thanks, (is it Jan or Anne?). I can't find a thing on any John Shaw in New York, but this man could still be the father of a first family (and my Warren Shaw). I think I'll try looking for the ancestries of John, Jr.'s and George's wives, and also the children of Nathaniel Churchill. Maybe somewhere in one of those lines another clue will come up regarding John, Sr. It's too bad the early census' didn't list names of wives and children. As to the other information you're looking for, in the past month I've seen a lot of Shaws listed as having come from Ireland to Maryland and further south. Have you tried looking at all the ship's passenger lists? I've scoured New York State, county by county, and I've given up finding John, Sr. there, although I've seen bits of evidence that he was. Keep us posted on what you find. I'll do the same. 3. With all this Shaw information coming up about Guilford County, NC, I hope I can connect to someone somewhere. My ggg-grandfather, Thomas Shaw was born 1794 (probably in Guilford County, best I can figure), married Elizabeth Graybeal from Ashe/Wilkes County, NC. I connect through their son, Solomon Shaw. Other children that I know of included John, Alfred, and Doctor N. Shaw. Does anyone recognize any of these names? Doctor is such an unusual first name, I am hoping someone will have something. I am stuck on Thomas and any help would be greatly appreciated. 1. [SHAW] James SHAW/GA 1820
    2. Hi... We're gonna have enough brick walls to build a new SHAW castle in the New World. :-) May I add mine? Still trying to make the connection: James SHAW, b. ca 1790/1800 in ? Family? Parents names? Died bef.1850 GA? AL? Here's what I do know: James SHAW m. Roda FARRAR/FARAR on 1 MAR 1820 in Madison, Morgan Co., GA. (Roda was the d/o John S. FARRAR and Dorcas BARNETT) I have James/Roda in Morgan Co, GA in 1820, DeKalb Co, GA in 1830, can't find them in 1840, in 1850 Roda is head-of-household in Benton, later Calhoun Co., AL with children William, James, Maranda and 2 others that were all b. in GA from 1827 to 1836. NO idea what happened to James SHAW. :-( The names Henry, Homer, Horace and Newton keep recurring in the later generations. There were some Homer and Horace SHAWs in Morgan Co, GA early-mid 1800s, but, I can find no definite connection. I DO believe that they MUST be related somehow--> Names/area/ timeframe. I've had wonderful help and tantalizing clues from other SHAW listmembers, but so far, no "AHA!". The best clues I've had put James' roots as Guilford Co, NC. "No proof", as they say. Can anyone help? Thanks! Dale Shaw Philadelphia, PA "Fide et fortitudine"
