Diane I would like to talk to you about your Augustus Shaw. rayskin@innersoft.net
Kathy, My Shaws in Mahaska Co. originated with Joseph & Highly Duckworth Shaw who left MD for IA after their marriage in 1839. They were in Washington Co. in 1840 Census & settled near Beacon in Mahaska Co. in 1842 or 3 after the Indian lands were opened. They had 10 children: Sidney, Harriet, Columbus, Alonzo, Augustus, Americus, Susan, Lawson, Hester & Joseph. After the Civil War, Joseph's brother, Thompson Shaw, went to IA settling in the New Sharon area. I believe there were other unrelated Shaw lines as well. Just a matter of names... my gggfather Duncan Shaw was born about 1816 in London, his father could have been born when your George Shaw. Duncan had two siblings John and Mary Anne and one son William George. I think the name of his father should be John, William or George. I know Duncan had some cousins the name of one of them being Selena or something similar (Susanna?). They all migrate but... into Spain. Duncan was Civil and Mining engineer. Just in case you find any connection. That's the name origin I've always seen. Problem is since so many were Brits and so many were Scots, narrowing down which country your Shaw's were from before US. Since mine likely began in North Carolina, I have to think Scotch-Irish. Kathy, you didn't mention where William, James and Ebenezer were born, or where they moved from. I'm looking for an older generation (Warren Shaw) from Johnstown, NY, who died in Birmingham, Iowa.
