Ah, you bring up a good point. The Chinese name "Hsia" is pronounced "Shaw" -- not just "like" it but exactly like it. No relation, of course. In addition, there is a considerable number of Chinese appearing Shaws in Hong Kong who probably are related. There is a Danish name (I haven't found those notes -- especially a newspaper article) which looks completely different but is pronounced "Vanshaw". The article said many east Texas Shaw families are descended from them, as some came into Texas pre-Republic to settle the Peters Colony. QUOTE OF THE DAY "Although we modern persons tend to take our electric lights, radios, mixers, etc., for granted, hundreds of years ago people did not have any of these things, which is just as well because there was no place to plug them in. Then along came the first Electrical Pioneer, Benjamin Franklin, who flew a kite in a lighting storm and received a serious electrical shock. This proved that lighting was powered by the same force as carpets, but it also damaged Franklin's brain so severely that he started speaking only in incomprehensible maxims, such as 'A penny saved is a penny earned.' Eventually he had to be given a job running the post office." --Dave Barry ----- Original Message ----- From: Domhnall Shaw o'Seaghdha <domhnall@sover.net> To: <SHAW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 19, 2001 8:34 PM Subject: Re: [SHAW] Shaw Families From Different Countries!!! > Oh, you are a luck woman, Viola! Hi all, I'm looking for information on Andrew R Shaw born 11 Dec 1825 died 16 Dec 1891. He married Irena Rogers b. 3 Feb 1830. Their children were Jennie, Emma, twins Edson and Arson and John Roger b. Jul 1872. I know John was born in the South Berwick area of Me. so I am assuming some of the others and maybe even the parents were. I believe Andrews parents were Samuel and Thankful Shaw. Any information at all will be greatly appreciated. Jay __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Okay folks, you asked for it and you got it! I'm not sure how well this is going to work, but the letter of the week this week is "A". When you send in your SHAW given names that begin with "A", please be sure to include dates, locations, spouses, children.... as much identifying information as you can include. Otherwise, this will be a meaningless exercise. Here's hoping we can knock down a few brick walls this way! Anne
Frank, I just went through the April/March queries for "FamilyHistory.com" (Ancestry.com website). I didn't find anything on your Angeloah, but you might want to go back further through their archives. And, I guess you've checked Civil War Pension Records? Hi Annie, I too have recieved 2 E-mails from Don & Ruth Kern the first attachment said --Setup.pif (oclet-stream attachment) the 2nd said, New_Napster_Site.Doc.scr (oclet-stream attachment). My Web TV unit would not let me open either one Lois
Hey Frank! My John turned up in Maryland! His middle name was the only clue. Since I was looking for Warren Shaw's parents, John and Persis, it was a big help. And it turned out that John Warren Shaw's lifelong friend, named John Warren, helped him with his pension records. Didn't I see somewhere a list of Angeloah's siblings? Maybe there is a clue there? The only thing I can think of is that you might start searching the Rootsweb archives of other counties in New York, or counties "back east" from there. My John Shaw was b in Cattaraugus County NY in 1848 and his parents were Angeloah Shaw and Mary Delilah Sapney Shaw. I have no idea who the parents of Angeloah were but since his first son was named John maybe his father was John, Not much to go on but if anyone can assist me I would be most appreciative. thanks Frank Hotaling Puzzledfrank@aol.com
Posted on: Shaw Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Shaw/10264 Surname: GINGLES, MERRIMAN, BUTLER ------------------------- Ancestry.com lists Cleotis and Tommy GINGLES in their Social Security Death Index, and shows their death to have been in Jackson, MS. That's in Hinds County. Try looking for Gerald/Benjamin Wayne Gingles in that area. I hope this helps. I, as a GINGLES, descended from Samuel GINGLES who came to America in 1754. He married Margaret McAlister. They stayed in PA a short time before going down to Mecklenberg Co. in NC to claim their land given by the English Crown. Their first son, Samuel, Jr., is the GINGLES ancestor from whom I am directly descended. Samuel and Margaret's second son, John, in turn had a John, Jr., who's son Charles, and possibly others, went down into Florida, and descendents filtered across the Deep South. Mine migrated NC > SC > AR > OK > CA. TX GINGLES, I suppose, could be from either. I'm sure we are cousins, and I hope this all helps. Sheila in San Diego
Listers: Although I'm not sure if the MAPI worm has hit our list yet, I have no doubt it will. I want to provide list subscribers with the FACTS and how to clean their computer of this worm, before it hits. Please do not worry! That's #1. It's a relatively harmless worm and it's easy to clean out of your system. Let me explain how it works, and what you can do to be sure you're protected and not infecting others. You may receive "replies" to various list mail in private email, each with an attachment, and each infected with a worm, W32.Badtrans.13312@mm Each message will quote your original message and at the bottom will say something like, "see the attachment", making it appear that the sender had replied with information. My McAfee Virus scanner does a great job of warning me, so I have not opened any attachments I have received through other lists. What I was actually sent was the W32.Badtrans.13312@mm worm. The W32.Badtrans.13312@mm is a MAPI worm that replies to all unread mails in your email message folders, and drops a backdoor Trojan Horse. What this means is that there are folks on lists who don't know they are infected. Someone posts a message to the list (any list). That message is sent to each subscriber. Any subscriber who is infected, will have their UNread mail replied to by the worm. Other than being a huge annoyance, this does not appear to be a malicious or destructive worm. Most lists have been hit. We have not been hit that I know of, but with as many subscribers as we have, I suspect we will be, if we haven't been already. Don't panic, just take precautions by first going to McAfee.com, (or Semantic for Norton Virus) and reading about the worm, and finding out how to check if you have it. Then if you don't have a good anti-virus program installed, get one! I have used McAfee since 1989, and am particularly partial to it. I now use it 'online'. It installs some parts of it's program on my computer over the internet. This is the part of the program that warns me if I am about to open something that contains a virus. I go to the McAfee site periodically and run their Virus Scan program directly from their site, where they check my entire computer for virus'....just in case. I suggest that everyone on the list go and read about this worm at McAfee, Symantec, or any other virus scanning software company that you like, and take steps to clean your computer if you are infected. Anyone who is on the internet should have virus protective software installed. Two sites I recommend highly are: http://www.mcafee.com Or http://www.symantec.com Please take precautions as this is an easy virus (worm) to clean up, but it is very annoying and, of course, is a worry to subscribers. Rootsweb doesn't allow for the sending of any attachments through the list, so if you so receive one that looks like it came from the SHAW-L, it didn't. Anne
I got an e-mail from Don and Ruth. They said they do NOT know what is going on, they DID NOT send the message! I was told it could be a virusif attachments were opened, take it from me, I opened the attachments, could not understand the "computerese" and NO problem has arose from my console. Everyone have a great EARTH DAY! Duane DeVoe in "high and dry" part of north west Illinois.
