Hello Listers I have just joined your list and hope that you may be able to help me in my search for the above family. As I only just begun this search on behalf of a friend who is descendant of John and Jane I have not much info as yet. By family stories John & Jane SHAW [possibly Jane's maiden name was also Shaw] born Inverness, Sct. emigrated to Tasmania Australia about 1859 with their 2 small boys Alexander James and Peter Donald. I have found Peter Donald Shaw's marriage and family in Tasmania but Alexander came to New South Wales and settled in the Tenterfield area of NSW. John SHAW is believed to have been killed when he fell off a horse as by 1865 his wife Jane had remarried to a fellow named KANNS [surname] and they had 2 boys Thomas and Billy. Is is possible that someone on the list may have connections to this family please. Thanking you for any interest. Joan in NSW.
Thank you. the 1880 census says Qualla Jackson County NC.Iheard they may have had a farm somewhere along Shoal Creek.
Qualla NC is actually Qualla Village NC very close to Cherokee NC in Bravard County and is almost entirely Cherokee Indians
American Indians,Cherokee,Choctaw,or something else.
Yes I can. My granpa was born in1886 at Whittier NC,his parents came to Tx in 1888.His Dads name was Allen Newton Shaw,I think he was born at Qualla NC.Anyway allens dad was Jasper Newton Shaw, his mother was Elizabeth Dills. Allen Shaw married Margaret Ann Gibbs in 1884 .Jasper Shaw & Elizabeth Dills both died in 1885,they are buried in Campground Cemetery at Cherokee NC.Jasper was a Confederate Vetran. He served in Thomas Legion from July 19 1862 until he was captured at the third battle of Winchester Sept 19 1864. Jasper was born in 1832 in NC ,I dont know any thing any farther back than that. Robert Shaw
I dont know the orign of my Shaw family, but my granpa said his daddy was irish and his mother was Indian Robert Shaw
Can you tell us a little more about your grandpa and his daddy? We know of some Shaws who married Indians in our family. Larry Shaw >I dont know the orign of my Shaw family, but my granpa said his daddy was >irish and his mother was Indian >Robert Shaw
I found at a local antique shop two photos of a woman, taken by Walsh studio of Trenton NJ. The manner of dress suggests they were possibly taken late 1800s to 1900. Annotation on the back of each says "Mrs. A. J. Shaw." If anyone is interested, please contact me. Rebecca
My great great grandfather was Thomas Shaw. He married an "Anna" (possibly a nickname for Rena or Rhoena) They lived in AL, then moved to GA. While they were in AL they had 5 children: James, Celia, Lillie, Emmitt and Thomas. When they moved to GA they had 1 more child: Clovy (census was hard to read). Thomas and Anna were listed in the 1900 census for Clay County, GA. James was listed in the 1920 census for Clay County, GA as married to Lucy. Lucy had a stillborn in 1919 in Clay County. The death certificate showed a maiden name of Woodard. No marriage record has been found of James Shaw married to a Lucy Woodard. Found a Eugene Shaw married to a Lucy, children: Dudley and James in the 1930 census for Clay County, GA. I contacted the Clay County library. I was told that there was a Gene Shaw listed in the marriage book married to Lucy Woodard June 16, 1918. Need to know if James and Eugene are the same person. Celia was listed in the Clay County Georgia marriage book as married to Angus Stanley - Jan 31, 1903. They were not listed in the 1910 census. I found an Angus and Cely Stanley in the 1920 census living with a Lovett Cornelous. Need to know if this Celia/Cely Stanley is the daughter of Thomas and Anna. Lillie was listed in the Clay County Georgia marriage book as married to Lovett Cornelous Jan 31, 1919. A Lillie Cornelous died Oct 8, 1919 in Clay County. According to the death certificate her parents were: Thomas Shaw and Rena Stafford. Now I found a Thomas Shaw and Rena Stafford listed at Rootsweb Clay County marriages. They were married Dec 9, 1875. There is no Rena Shaw married to a Thomas Shaw in the census. There is not even a Rena Stafford in the census prior to marrying Thomas Shaw. I also found an Anna Stafford in the 1870 census for Muscogee Co, GA Is anyone related or help solve this mystery family.
My great great grandfather was Thomas Shaw. He married an "Anna". They had 6 children: James, Celia, Lillie, Emmitt, Thomas and Clovy (census was hard to read). They lived in AL between about 1877-1894/1900, then moved to Clay County, GA. Their daughter Lillie was listed in the Clay County Georgia marriage book as married to a Lovett Cornelous - Jan 5, 1919. A Lillie cornelous died Oct 8, 1919 in Clay County. According to her death certificate her parents were listed as Thomas Shaw and Rena Stafford. I found a Thomas Shaw and Rena Stafford at Rootsweb Clay County marriages 1840-1892. married Dec 9, 1875. No Rena Shaw had been found as married to Thomas Shaw. No Rena Stafford has been found prior to marrying Thomas Shaw. I did find an Anna Stafford in the 1870 census for Muscogee Co, GA. I'm trying to find out if Rena and Anna are the same person. I also found a Rhoena Shaw living with a Thomas Shaw in the 1880 census for Henry County, AL.
It seems many of us have brick walls on our Shaw line! My great grandmother was Harriet Isabelle Shaw. She was born 4 Nov 1853 in Morgan County, Missouri to James & Isabel Shaw. She married Thomas H. Pruet 29 Nov 1871 in St Clair Co, Missouri. Thomas Pruet died 1n 1893 at Roscoe, St. Clair, Missouri. She remarried a few years later to Richardson and died 6 Apr 1940 in Picher, Oklahoma. I've tried and tried to find her parents but other than the birth record I can't find a trace of them. Any help would be appreciated!
I have seen Shawe used a few times.
>Is there another variation on the SHAW name that I should look for? Shea, Schaw? etc.??? Susan (Shaw) Gardner< Have found it spelled Schaw on records from Scotland. My Shaws came to NC from Isle of Jura. Billie Shaw Powell http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccumber/colinshaw.html
I can believe that. I do have Elizabeth 's Shaw's parents and grqnd parents And that both her grandparents were b. in Maryland. I'm just trying to find out when and where she died. I'll have to do some more digging there in Kentucky. Nancy
Congradulations, I hope that soon you'll find his parents and his grandparents.!!! I've been mainly digging for my Stroxtile's and Tinnell's I have to admit . ( Not There is 2 names that's Rare.) All the Stroxtile's that are known today, I"m related to them directly or by marriage!!. But anyway. I wish "thee" success. Nancy S.
