    1. SHAW, Isaac b.1780 Dutchess Co. NY
    2. LANDSEND
    3. Hi, I am hoping that someone might have information on one of my brick wall ancestors. SHAW, Isaac Birth: 1780 Dutchess Co. NY Death: 9 October, 1822 West Lincoln Co. Upper Canada (Niagara Region) 42 yrs. of age Burial: Merritt Settlement Cemetery, West Lincoln, Smithville, Ontario, Canada Residence: Lot 5, Con 6, Caistor Twp. West Lincoln, Ontario, Canada Wife: MERRITT, Prudence b.1772 Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY (d/o Joseph Merritt UEL and Mary Parker originally of Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY. Emmigrated to Upper Canada following the American Revolution) Children: 1. Elizabeth Shaw b.1804 2. Deborah Shaw 3. Mary Ann Shaw b.1810 4. William Hamilton Shaw b.1814 5. Enoch Dolton Shaw b.Sept. 16, 1816 6. Nancy Shaw b.1818 7. Prudence Shaw b.1821 8. Isaac N. Shaw b.1823 It is from Issac and Prudence's daughter Mary Ann Shaw and her husband William Havens whom I am descended. Isaac petitioned for land in Grimsby Twp. in 18180 and had apparently been in Upper Canada for 11 years at that time. It is also recorded that he had a lame knee and served on Grimsby Twp. council in 1814 in Upper Canada. I have much information on my Merritt line, but know nothing about Isaac Shaw's parentage, siblings and heritage. The Merritts were Loyalists, so I assume that Isaac Shaw and his family were also Loyalists, but have no actual proof of this. I found a number of Shaws in the 1790 census/head of households list. There is Enoch Shaw who was in Fishkill, Isaac Shaw who was in Philipstown, Michael Shaw in Fishkill and William Shaw Sr. in Fishkill, all in Dutchess Co. NY who I think could be possible fathers of my Isaac Shaw, as he would have been only 10 years of age at the time of this census. There are numerous other Shaws listed as well, but I'm looking at the fact that my Isaac Shaw had a son named Enoch and at who was in Fishkill in 1790, where Prudence Merritt was from at that time. Other Shaws on the census list for Dutchess Co. in 1790 inclued Benjamin, Daniel, Eli, James, Joshua, Noah, Reuben, Robert, William and William Jr. Does anyone on this mailing list have these names in their family tree or know anything more about this Shaw line? Any help or input would be most gratefully appreciated. Thank you. Diane

    1. Re: Orange County, NY SHAWs
    2. Thanks for the input on the SHAWs, GrannyToad. Like that email address !! Pretty cute !! Let me respond to several of your inputs. I had missed Oscar in 1850 for some reason -- possibly because Ancestry and HeritageQuest don't have the 1850 Census indexed. The Mary E. versus Nancy E. poses more questions, but the ages seem to track. What would we ever do if there were no questions?? :>)) It's always possible that a neighbor gave the information to the Census taker, or maybe even the parents hadn't really decided completely on a name for the newborn daughter. Then I had found Oscar in the 1870 Census after my posting. I had noted the "Julia" in Oscar's household, suggesting that maybe she was a second spouse, but I hadn't noticed Mary in the same household. Thanks for noting that. I did notice "Jennie" at the right age for "Nancy J." in 1870, and I have seen something recently in Robert Brennan's books somewhere that suggested the "Jennie" given name. I also had not found Henry A. in Middletown in 1870 -- thanks for that tip, too. Maybe with enough inputs, we'll be able to put these SHAWs together !! Thanks again for your contributions. 2. Thanks for your response, Emma Jean. Unfortunately, what you saw in my posting is all I have on the Sarah J. Shaw, daughter of Oscar Shaw and Mary Ann Carpenter. Sarah J.'s name and birth date and location came from the 1860 Census of Wallkill, Orange County, NY. I did look a bit further in Robert Brennan's "Wallkill, Orange County, NY, Vital Statistics, 1881-1913", but did NOT find a marriage record for Sarah J. Shaw. Given her birth date of about 1853, this source might be too late for her. Sorry I couldn't find her. ;<(( However, you might have some success in posting a query to the RootsWeb Orange County Mailing List at [email protected] Oscar Shaw and his family were living in Orange County in 1860. Good luck. I'll keep an eye out for Sarah J, however. Give her a try when the "S's" come up on the SHAW list !! :>)) John Hale Williamsburg, VA In a message dated 8/20/2005 1:04:45 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: John, Do you have any further information on this Sarah J. 1. O & P First Name Shaws - OTIS SHAW, "of" Vinalhaven, Maine
    2. Since we've finally made it to the O's. I'd like to try again in hopes that someone has run across my OTIS Shaw. What I know: Otis SHAW was born about 1785 and married Lydia CARVER August 31, 1807 in Vinalhaven, Maine. They had nine children that I know of: Hannah, Jenny, John, Mary, William, Abigail, Susan, Margaret and Rebecca. Lydia CARVER, daughter of Thaddeus CARVER and Hannah HALL, died June 26, 1829 in Vinalhaven, Maine. Otis married Nancy Marchant/Merchant on December 14, 1831 in Vinalhaven. Otis is mentioned in three issues of "Times and Seasons" that I located on the internet in regards to meetings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In a September 1841 issue, he is listed as the Clerk. In a December 1841 issue and again in an April 1843 issue, he is listed as the president of the church branch for Fox Islands. In the 1850 census, his second wife, Nancy, is listed living with her son Andrew Marchant. I could not find Otis in the 1850 census. What I DON'T know: Where and when was Otis born? Who were his parents? Where and when did he die? Otis SHAW is my 4th great-grandfather. Thanks for any information. Linda (in Florida)

    3. Bob, I see Phillip in Portland, ME in 1840 age 30-40 with what looks like wife 30-40 and two children under 5, one m one f. In 1850 I find in Portland also, all b ME except Margaret b England: Philip Shaw 45 Margaret Shaw 22 Philip Shaw 13 Mary E Shaw 11 James Shaw 10 Sarah Shaw 7 Martha Murry 19 Philip and Mary must be the two children from 1840 and James must have been born after the census. These children are too old to belong to Margaret, presumably the second wife. Sarah is probably from the first marriage as well. In 1860 T11R7 Macoupin, IL (all Shaw): Phillip 44 ME Margaret 30 England George H 10 ME Hellen E 7 ME Alice 3 IL Ada 3/12 IL Phillip 22 ME Mary 20 ME Sarah 17 ME James 18 ME The way the children grouped--not by age order--makes me think George, Hellen, Alice and Ada are from the second marriage to Margaret. James' age is off here, but that is not uncommon. Phillip Sr is a year younger than he was in 1850, so one or the other is wrong, I suspect the 1850 is correct, even though this seems too old to be Margaret's husband, because he was 30-40 in 1840, so 45 in 1850 seems good. And from the POB's it looks like the family migrated from ME between 1853 and '57. On my FHL disc I find: SHAW, Phillip Marriage Wife: Margaret J. HALL Marriage Date: 10 Sep 1849 Recorded in: Civil Records for Portland, Cumberland, Maine Source: FHL Number 12021 Dates: 1811-1853 and the same marriage recorded 2 Sep 1849. This doesn't help much with James' mother, and I do not find that one listed but it may be in another database. But it does tell us that Sarah belongs to the first wife, so DOD for James' mother must be 1843-1849? Why couldn't they have started listing all the names from the get-go instead of waiting till 1850? Maybe try posting to the Kennebec county message board to see if anyone will do a lookup at the state archives in Augusta for Philip Shaw + ? 1826-1837, leaning toward 1834-37, probably married in Portland, ME. Something happens to break up the family, in 1870 I find Alice living with sister Mary now married to James C Rutherford--I think, the POB and DOB line up for both -- in Madelia, Watonwan, MN. Possible Ada in Iowa with another relative, though this doesn't seem as good a match. Phillip Jr is in Knox county IL with 2 ch and cannot find James. James shows up still in Macoupin county in 1880, married with 3 ch under 10, so probably more fiddling with the search keys would make him pop out in 1870 as well. It is possible from the fact that 12 year old Alice is living with half sister in a completely different state that both Phillip Sr and Margaret have died. Now checking Internet trees now that I know a few facts I find on Kenneth Linwood Shaw III's site http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kenshaw2001&id=I002215 ID: I002215 Name: Mary L. There are no children shown, but by the dates and the location of Portland, ME I think this has to be who you are looking for. I do not find this marriage in the WALF database, but will email the WALF genealogist to see if they have it in the Leavitt database. Here is Philip's entry on the Ken Linwood Shaw page--you can click on the father and mother's name to extend your lines up. There is the caution that the facts need to be verified--if sources are given and check out you should be in good shape. I have found errors on this database, although Ken's research seems excellent, many of the entries come from others and there is no way he can personally research every entry. 3. In response to Susan Shaw Gardner's request to the list for Shaw first names beginning with P, I am asking the following question: I have just one name to add to the list Pauline Shaw b 1901, in Bridgeton, NJ Still there in 1920 she married Nicholas Pasquale. Pauline is the daughter of Chester Shaw and Elizabeth Matlack.
