My husband's Shatswell line comes from Minnie Ruth Shatswell - her parents were Thomas C and Rutha M (Jones). It has been interesting reading all the various posts from over the years - I would be very interested in whatever information you've collected. Evelyn M Flood has a web page regarding some of the Shatswell family history.. It hasn't been updated recently, though.. Course, its understandable considering that Ms. Flood is aged now.. I get emails from her periodically. I'm on Facebook, too... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: danil54grl Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.shatswell/20.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: 1672 Dec. 7. Letter. Same to same: affirming sentence of banish- ment of Abraham SHOTWELL The first definite account SHOTWELL of a Shotwell in America is of Abraham Shotwell,. who was one of the earliest settlers of Eliza- bethtown, New Jersey, in 1665. It is said that the name in England was originally Shad- well, and that one of the name, in an archery contest before the king, shot with such precision that the monarch exclaimed in delight, "Well done, Shot well," and that thereafter that form of the name was adopted. In the early Friends records of Flushing, Long Island, the name is commonly written Chat- well. Abraham Shotwell was probably one of the many Englishmen who fled to America after the death of Cromwell and the restoration of Charles II to the throne. Hatfield's "History of Elizabeth, New Jersey," states that Abraham Shotwell was fourth in the list of the sixty-five persons in that town, who, on February 19, 1655, took the oath of allegiance to King Charles II of England and to the proprietors of the province. He was the owner of five acres of valuable land in the heart of the town. In the contentions between ! the people of the town of Elizabeth and' the proprietors, he was bold and outspoken in his opposition to the tyranical and oppressive exactions enforced by the governor, Captain Philip Carteret, which course rendered him obnoxious to that officer. There is a tradition in the family that, meeting the governor on the bridge over the creek that passes through the town, they had a personal altercation, which resulted in his pitching the governor into the water. He became the victim of the governor's wrath. Certain it is that his house and grounds were confiscated and he forced into exile. His valuable property was sold at auction April 25, 1675, and a few days afterward came into possession of Governor Carteret for the small sum of £14. Mr. Shotwell retired to New York, and did not again reside permanently in New Jersey. He obtained a grant of land in New York, and located, it is believed, not far from the site of the first Brooklyn bridge. Riker, in 4he "History of Harlem," sa! ys (p. 383) "Elphinstone had erected a leather mill and other building s upon his tract, with the assistance of a copartner, Abraham Shotwell, late of New Jersey, to whom the patent was made out. October 30, 1677, Elphinstone sold all his interest in the farm houses and mill to Shot- well, who in payment gave his obligation in the form of a note for £52, 1os." Abraham Shotwell, "with consent of his son John," sold the farm and improvements in 1679 to John Robinson. He probably died in New York city about the year 1680. The name of his wife has not been ascertained. He certainly had a son John, who is the ancestor of the Shotwells of Rahway, Plainfield, New Jersey, and Johnstown, New York ````````````````````````````````````````````````` Not sure how true this may be...danil54grl@yahoo.com. My gt grandmother was Caroline May Shotwell, daughter of Jonathan Drake Shotwell and Caroline Kinman Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Eric, I agree that the info. in the June 22nd response to your earlier query was not particularly helpful. I don't know who jgs1213 is and have never exchanged info. with them as far as I know. Regarding a possible connection of the Shotwell name with Shatswell, unfortunately, I know no more now than when I posted my query ten years ago. Unrelated to the Shotwell/Shatswell name connection, a recent find that I will be doing followup on this Fall and Winter is on a report written in 1929 by a member of the Walsall (Staffordshire), England HIstorical Society for a g.g.uncle, James T. Shotwell. The report appears to document marriages, births, etc., of several (or many) Shotwells in the early/mid 1600's but none after abt. 1662. A John Shotwell was elected Mayor or Walsall in both 1658 and 1662. James T. Shotwell, who died in 1965, was a noted historian and professor or history at Columbia University from 1908-1942 and had obvious interest in Shotwell ancestry. Will let you know what I may find if you are interested. John Shotwell johnisjr@whidbey.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Plus, I already own the full *annotated* version of the Shotwell Family Annals book including the 1972 update, since my family purchased it when it was annotated and reprinted. However, this book also does not indicate any additional information regarding the source of the Shotwell name beyond Abraham Shotwell in the early to mid-1600's in New Jersey. Thanks for the suggestion, but it offers no new or additional information at all. Eric Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are hints that Abraham *may* be somehow related to the Shatswell line of Ipswich, Massachusetts, but there has been no proof of this that I have seen. The name "Abraham" doesn't show up in any records I have seen related to the Shatswell name, nor is there any reference to anyone migrating to NJ of this name... it's still a total mystery. Hoping one day to find a passenger list with Abraham on it, or something akin to that. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
