I recently obtained on loan the 1969 book, EARLY RECORDS. MADISON CO., AL (1808-1840). On p. 78: ".. Out in Sharp's Cove ... was congregated a colony of the Sharp family, who as purchasers at the land sales of 1830, furnish us the names of John, ..., and Patsey Sharp [who m. Henry Scott.]" The land involved here was apparently not added to Madison Co.(organized 1808) until 1826. From other sources, it appears that an older John Sharp (d. 1817) and wife Martha Young was the ancestor of these Sharps. [Patsey, of course, is a dimunutive of Martha.] Now, my question! There was a John Sharp who m. Patsey Carter, daughter of Robert Carter, in Abbeville Co., SC just before the 1790 census. This John appears in the 1790 census. Then he disappears from SC records. Is there any chance that this John and Patsey are the older John and Patsey associated with Madison Co., AL? The fact that one Patsey was a Carter and the other one appears to be a Young augers against this conclusion. We have no clue as to where the John and Patsey of SC went after 1790. Regards, Theron Smith.
