In the past we've had some discussion on this list about the William N. SHARP found in Patrick Co., Va., in the early 19th century. I have recently been going through Court Order Books and have found the following: Patrick Co., Va., Order Book #3 for 12 March 1829 mentions that Philipena SHARP relinquished her dower rights to the 100 acres of land that her husband, William N. SHARP, had sold to Samuel SHARP 12 Feb. 1829. This makes it likely that William N. SHARP was the same person as the William SHARP who married Philipena FITZGERALD 24 Feb. 1811. William N. SHARP had a son named Leonard. Patrick Co., Va., Court Order Book #4 for 15 Jan. 1835 says: "William CLARK is appointed Surveyor of the road in place of Moses CLARK resigned and it is ordered that the hands assigned the said Moses constitute his gang and keep the same in repair according to law. -- And that Wm. SHARP & son Leonard and John B. HUDSON & his sons be added thereto." Again, in PCVA Order Book #4, April 1835 Court, "Wm. N. SHARP & Leonard SHARP" are mentioned in another road order. Interestingly, this one includes a second William SHARP among those constituting the gang of David ROGERS, newly appointed Surveyor of the road from the "fork of the road near Obediah BELCHERs to Dr. Hudsons...." Possibly the repetition is an error; but possibly this might be a second son of William N. SHARP, since the 1830 Census shows him with one white male aged 10-15 and one aged 15-20 in his household. So far I have found nothing in the Order Books that would explain why Philipena (FITZGERALD) SHARP alone gave permission for the marriage of their daughter Louvenia to Mark PLASTERS 13 Sept. 1836. I have also found no hint of who the parents were of William N. SHARP. However it seems likely that the Leonard SHARP who was co-bondsman with William N. SHARP for the marriage of Veny SHARP to Crawford BURNETT 29 Dec. 1810 was a brother, and that Veny (Louvenia) was their sister. Robert SHARP sold land to both Leonard and William N. SHARP; Leonard later sold his land to the John B. HUDSON mentioned in the road order and William N. SHARP sold his to Robert's son, Samuel. If anyone has info that might clarify these relationships, I'd appreciate hearing from them. Mary C.
