Bill: Have you seen the book "Sharpe Genealogy" by W.C.Sharpe,published in about 1880?Interesting bits in it in the area you are researching. If you would like,I can send you a brief lineage report outlining the earliest information we have on our line.So far,the John Sharp born in 1804(My GG Grandfather) is as far back as I have gotten. Several other researchers in our family list his father as being John Sharp also.NO ONE has documented either our John's birth date & location or his fathers correct name.If they have, they are guarding the secret. There are about 8 of us that are from the same John Sharp that exchange quite regularly.I have been at it about 2 years. Others up to 12 years or more. Many trips to Vermont & New York without much luck yet. Hi Charles, The John Sharp I had in mind lived in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence County, New York, and worked as a tailor as I recall. He was either born in Vermont or Canada (depending on which census you believe), and died in 1865 apparently during an epidemic (his wife, Charlotte, and an adult son died within days). I have researched this family to see if they connect to the largest Sharp family in the county. I am working on writing a book on the latter group. I would be interested to learn more about your Sharp lineage as I may have some connections in eastern New York State. I have researched many of the early Sharp families in the Hudson Valley, although I am far from complete in this endeavor. Bill
Bill: John was in eastern Ohio for a while, then moved to Western Michigan(Newaygo County) where he lived out the rest of his life.At least one daughter listed as born in New York. Several in Ohio. His wife was Betsey Davis. Children were Simon, born abt. 1829 in Ohio;Harriett, born about 1830 in New York;Amos, born 8/7/1832 in Ohio;Milo, born 10/17/1836 in Ohio;Frank, born 5/27/1842 Ohio(or Pa.);Mary Jane, born 1844 in Michigan;James, born 1849 in Ohio;Laura, born 1851 in Ohio. Most of family(children) were born in or lived in Ashtabula County,Ohio. As far as we know, only Simon, the oldest, stayed in Ohio.We believe that John may have been born in New York State. He listed Vermont in most documents in Michigan.I note however that a portion of Vermont later became part of New York or the other way around in about 1830.A river changed course and after some debate the item was settled. Thanks for your response & I hope it is a hit. The other day I came across an article published in 1925 in the Watertown Daily Times, Watertown, New York, about U.S. Rep. and Senator John Sharp Williams (1854-1932). The article tells about his boyhood in Tennessee and Mississippi and his life on the ante-bellum plantation of his grandfather Sharp. It does not tell the names of his family, but from what I can tell, the grandparents were John Sharp and Mary Allison of Yazoo County, Mississippi. It does tell about the family moving to and settling in Mississippi. The article reflects our racist past, but may be of historical interest to someone researching this family. I'd be happy to make a couple of photocopies and send them to interested parties. Bill Hull
Hi Charles, Do you have info on where John Sharp lived as an adult, who he married, or who his children were? I have a potential match here in northern New York State. Bill Hull
What a great group and thank you for all your responses. I should have posted the names, dates and places in the first post, but was eager to find if anyone was working on the ones in Kentucky to see if I could get a lead on where to look for this brick wall. I am trying to find info on Ann Sharp born April 18,1782 in Pennsylvania who married a King. She died in Daviess County which would have been Ohio County Kentucky Aug 5, 1856. I was told her parents were Allen (ca 1762) & Rachel (ca 1791) Sharp. I have not been able to find any more infor on this family. I don't know if her parents came with her, of if they stayed in Pennsylvania. Thank you again and I will sincerely appreciate any help that anyone has to offer. P. J.
P. J. There were thousands of Sharp families in Kentucky, beginning in early 1700s. If you don't have names and localities yet, start with later generations you have info on and work back. If you do have some info on the Sharps from KY, include that info in your query and some of us might be able to help. Good luck. Bud Sharpe in sunny Florida

I don't have anything on John Sharp of 1804, Vermont. But my Grandfather was John Franklin Sharp born in 1857 in Indiana and came to Nebraska and Missouri. His father, my Great Grandfather was Isaac Sharp from Vermont. I don't have any dates for him, but I would imagine in the early 1800's. Do you have any information on my Isaac? Thank you. You can email me personally at jharding@redoak.heartland.net Jane Harding, Iowa

Looking for living descendants of Nathaniel Sharp, born 10 Nov 1644 in Salem, Mass. He is known to have had a son named Samuel (b. 3 Jun 1673) whose fate is unknown. Daughter Rebecca (b 1671) married John Merriam; dau Abigail (b 1678) married Alexander Douglas.
I have been cleaning out my great-grandparents old home in Sevier County, TN. We found a box of old pictures. Many have names and many do not. If there is someone in the Blount County, TN. area that would like to help me identify them, I would love to hear from you. They are the family of Thomas and Amanda Sharp; Ida Sharp Ellis and Pole Ellis. I think a lot of them are the children of Ida Sharp Ellis' brothers and sisters and their families. Hello, The following was an article from the March 23, 1933 LaFollette Press. Alf Sharp Shot Monday Evening. Bill Smiddy has been charged with Killing; Riding in Auto at Time. Alf Sharp, 40, was shot through the forehead from the dark as a man, alleged to have said that he was Bill Smiddy, halted a car in which Sharp and Rufe Speaks were riding just across the Kentucky line from Jellico Monday night. Bill Smiddy, 23, was arrested in Ky., and taken to Williamsburg. Speaks, superintendent of the Big Nickle Mining Co. at Clearfield who was driving the car in which Sharp was riding, said that as they approached Jellico, Ky., a man stepped out into the road and signaled to them to stop. The man said, "Who is this?" according to Speaks. "This is Alf Sharp." Then there was a gunshot and Sharp slumped in his seat, Speaks said. Alfred Sharp was the son of John Sharp & Martha Lay Sharp. He was born in 1881 Campbell County, Tn. He was married to Lillie Strunk. Alfred Sharp was the son of my great grandparents. Would like to find anyone else researching this line of Sharps and if they have any more information on his murder. Thank you, Kathy
Billie...finally getting to my mail and want to thank you for the address to this book store in Rutland, VT. I have been kind of busy with my Squires line in upper state NY. We are having one heck of a time with them also. I finally gave up on the Sharpes and I think all the other researchers have too. Maybe this book might have something of value to it. I almost got a document from a researcher, Patrick Waddell, of VA, who gave Julius Sharpe and his bride Mary Ann Kelley a year 1790, of their marriage in his book. When I wrote to him, he could not find his source for this information. So, after that, I gave up. We need to find Julius' marriage bond to find out who is the mother of his son, Henry. There is reason to believe, Mary Ann Kelley is not his first wife. Once we can get these two people connected, I have pretty much the rest of the ancestors connected. .Thank you for getting me this address.
