    1. [SHARP-L] SHARP and MEANS
    2. Roberta Sharp
    3. Recently the Means list has had a flurry of activity, so I am posting a message there. I will post it on the SHARP list as well: My MEANS ancestor was Mary (Polly). who was married in Rockingham Co. NC to Chesley BARNES,b. 1760, Buckingham Co. VA. Robert MEANS b. 1735 PA and Betsy ROBERTSON/ROBINSON b. 1737 of Rockingham Co. NC were Mary's parents. They also had daughters Nancy and Fleming who married two Sharps: James m. Fleming MEANS and Richard m. Nancy MEANS. Is anyone researching Roberts MEANS or the Sharp line? I am researching SHARP lines also, but I don't know whether these Sharps connect to my husband's line. Roberta

    1. [SHARP-L] Elias Sharp of Spotsylvania Co, VA
    2. 1. Would like to know what deed, will, Bible, court record or other primary source provides a birthdate for Elias Sharp of Spotsylvania County (it was not Orange, formed 1734 from Spotsylvania) as 1689. The earliest document relating to Elias to my knowledge is a deed of lease which was dated 22 Dec 1735 and acknowledged 3 Feb 1735/6. George Proctor conveyed to John Proctor and Elias Sharp (Spots.DB C, p 166). This would require Elias to have been 21 years old as of that date, placing his birth on or before 22 Dec 1714. 2. Location of the marriage record in King George? 3. Elias Sharp died intestate (or with a will bequeathing only personal property) about 1765. He had two or more sons, as George Sharp was his "eldest son and Heir at Law." (Spots. DB F, p 566, 3 Jun 1765) George had to be 21 to own the property in his own name as heir and to sell it. Thus George was born on or before 3 Jun 1744. The 150 acres sold by George was part of a larger tract devised by George Procter to his daughter Margaret, the wife of Elias Sharp. As the lands of Elias passed by descent, the size of the tract in the will of George Procter, when compared to the 150 acres inherited by George Sharp, would yield the number of children. By that time all children took equal shares. Do you have the terms of George Procter's will? His eldest son, George Procter, had moved to Prince George county by 1 Aug 1737. On that date he conveyed to his brother (John Procter) and brother-in-law (Elias Sharp) 436 acres on the branches of Hazel Run (which empties into the Rappahannock River in the present day city of Fredericksburg, after running easterly about 6 miles) in Spotsylvania county. The deed was executed to convey fee simple title to the land because George Proctor senr (who had died leaving a will between 3 Feb 1735/6 and 1 Aug 1737) had a drafting error in the will which caused ownership to pass to son George rather than to the intended devisees, son John and son-in-law Elias. (Spots DB C, p 236) 4. Thus Elias and Margaret had two or more sons. The Mary Sharp who married John Parks is given specific dates in several posted family histories, but with no indication of the basis for those dates. The marriage date of 20 Aug 1732 in King George county should be verifiable by a book and page of the marriage register of that jurisdiction. The source of a precise birth date of 20 Aug or 20 Oct 1715 for Mary might be from a baptismal record or a Bible, but the source is not given. The fact that it appears as both August & October indicates an original record probably denoted "8ber," (October being correct, it then being the 8th month of the year). There also have been posted reports of a second daughter named Susanna, who allegedly married one Jesse Boone, but no evidence has been seen to support that. 5. Origin of Elias. The only report, again without source, as to his origins was that he was transported from Newgate Prison. Have not checked various transportation lists. Hope that helps, a. sharp Audrey, Your Elisha Sharp sounds like the Elias Sharp who is my wife's 6th ggf. We don't have his ancestry either. 1. Elias SHARP was born in 1689 in Orange County, Virginia. Elias married Margaret PROCTOR daughter of George PROCTOR and Mary (PROCTOR) in 1714 in King George County, Virginia. Margaret was born about 1693 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia . She died in 1760 in King George County, Virginia. They had the following children: 2 F i. Mary SHARP was born on Oct 20 1715 in King George County, Virginia. She died about 1793 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Mary married John PARKS son of Thomas PARKS on Aug 20 1732. John was born on May 18 1706 in Virginia. He died in 1791 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.

Remember to reply only to relative subjects, otherwise send a new message or change subject line. That way those of us who think we are getting a reply to our messages don't get excited for nothing and those looking for your family member's in the subject line won't overlook your's in the wrong subject matter. 3. Hello, I keep reading this list every day, too, but little pertains to my family. My grandmother, Mary Frances Sharp was born in 1882 inWabash County, Illinois, USA - Her mother, Frances Arrilla Risley was born in 1854 in Wabash County, too. The husband of Frances Arrilla Risley was George William Sharp, born 1855 in Stamford, England. His father was Spencer Sharp, b. 1823 in Stamford, England. Spencer's father was James Page Sharp. 3. Hi Lister's I haven't seen any activity since I joined. Is there anyone out there looking for Pa Sharps? I am searching absolutely everywhere. Are the names Tamor/Tamar or Abigail Sharp familar to anyone? Last located in Delaware County, but I have found them earlier in 1850 in Chester County. Samuel Sharp could be the sibling of a John, William or Henry Sharp as they were the names of his sons. 3. Dear List, I have posed this request to another list or so that it might pertain too, so I apologize for the duplication, but in the finding of my ggg grandfather Samuel Sharp in the 1850's census with family and then his wife in the 1880's census living with their daughter and her family as a window, I'm finding it difficult to veryify heritage until I can prove parentage of Samuel Sharp. I need to go back one more generation in order to verify heritage that our Sharp name seems to have alot of in this area, but I need his parentage. There seems to be a common thread of the Sharp, Baker's and Yarnall's in the family. Samuel's and Susanna Sharp's daughter, Abigail married Edward Yarnall. His mother's maiden name was also Baker. Their other daughter(my ggg grandmother,Tamar married Daniel Baker) I have found alot of information in the Historical Documents of Delware and Chester Counties, but I need to get back one more generation in order to verify heritage,if any, I would appreicate any help in this matter. A cousin that I have located through the Sharp/Yarnall line is coming up this month and we had hoped to visit all the places our ancestors lived. I searched through the census of the 1870 census to no avail. I was hoping someone would have a earlier one, possibly the 1840's or so in order for me to verify if my Samuel Sharp is the decendant Sharp that occupied our area with William Penn or is the one in the Civil War records. Any help would be greatly, fondly appreciated. Esther Sharp, Samuel State: Pennsylvania Year: 1850 County: Chester Roll: Township: Willistown Twp Sharp, Samuel, 50 years, Plasterer, b. 3. Hi Billie, I am also a descendent of H. E. and Mary Malissa Goolsby Sharp. Another cousin of ours and I have been searching all available records for the last 3 years. So far we have not found him in any of the places and records we have rersearched. His initials are on the death certificate of his son, John Edward Sharp. Julia and John E.'s sister, Lou, may have more information on her death certificate but I do not have a copy of it. There were Sharps in Ellis County, Texas, during the 1860's, but so far we have not been able to connect to them. John E's death certificate says that he too was born in 1860, in Ellis County. Families usually travelled together so I feel that those in Ellis County at that time are ours. I am excited to know that another cousin has joined the chase.
