Hi Everyone, Jim Hicks compliled these for your use with the surname reports. GB07 = Gideon Blackburn's school 1806-1807 (Student roster) SPMS = Spring Place Mission School (Student rosters) NSPMS = New Spring Place Mission School (SPMS restablished in the Western Territory after removal. Student rosters) DET# = Detachment number (from various muster rolls, payroll records and ration receipts; which Detachment did they go west on) IHG = Indian Home Guard (Civil war muster rolls) N-Cher = Native Cherokee (1880 & 1890 Census used the following codes: N-Cher Native Cherokee A-White Adopted White A-Del Adopted Delaware A-Shaw Adopted Shawnee A-Col Adopted Colored etc. SB district = Skin Bayou District, CNW (in 1851 this was changed to Sequoyah District) Roll B: Cherokee that emigrated to the western territory after the 1851 Drennen were simply accepted into the Cherokee Nation. Around 1869 the western Cherokee Nation decided to require citizenship application before a committee. "Roll B", and there's a "Roll A" are lists of groups of emigrants that came west after 1851 (these lists were prepared in 1873) but they didn't include ALL of the emigrants, just those that weren't already recognized as Cherokee by 1869. I've found two more such "Roll"s, much smaller, from 1881 and 1883. Hello list members, This week so far, I have submitted to all of you the following: 1880 CNWColored Census of Oklahoma (partial) 1869 CNWest Census of Oklahoma (partial) 1902 Dawes- Freedmen (partial) 1906 Dawes- Freedmen Minors (partial) IMPORTANT NOTICE : These records are all from original documents. 1869 CNWest Census These Jim Hicks transcribed from photocopies of the original document. 1880 CNWColored Census These were transcribed by Barbara Benge from photocopies of the original. 1902 Dawes Freedmen These are OCR transcriptions scanned from a NARA index to the 1902 Dawes. Jim Hicks has worked a lot with the Cherokee by Blood transcriptions and says there are errors. 1906 Dawes Freedmen Minors Same as above. Now I suggest that any of you who are using these names in your family geneology, MUST and SHOULD refer to 3 books, that I know can be bought cheaply, for this FREEDMEN RESEARCH. Those books are: Cherokee Roots, Volume 1: Eastern Cherokee Rolls and VOL 2 also.( you can buy cheaply in a set), by Bob Blankenship A reader, East Texas, USA, April 9, 2001 This set is a MUST have for those tracing your Cherokee root This set contains the Official US Census Rolls of Cherokee Indians recorded between 1817-1924. Volume one covers those Cherokee living East of the Mississippi River, Volume 2 covers Cherokee who were living West of the Mississippi River. These same rolls are still used today in determining tribal... Index to the Cherokee Freedmen Enrollment Cards of the Dawes Commission 1901-1906 by Jo Ann Curls Page (Paperback - January 1995) I find Jo Ann's book to be a real asset to comparing the Freedmen Roll numbers and her book also gives the names of the parents, and the Freedmen Minors, as well as the Rejected Freedmen. After you have found your family member and compare to the books above, to make sure there is no mistake in the roll numbers, you may then want to do the following. Click here: GUION MILLER ROLL http://www.rootsweb.com/~cherokee/miller.html Thank you, Bright Star For the record: I am in no way affiliated with or do I know personnally the writers of the books, I have suggested you buy. Hi Everyone, I am about to submit to the list various census portion's and Freedmen records. The Freedmen as you probably already know are former slaves or their desendents. These records will include African Americans, Native Americans and Caucasian American names, in Indian Territory of OK. These are after the Civil War period. Two of these files will include the ROLL #'s for the Freedmen and the Freedmen Minors. You may copy and use any portion that pertains to your family line, on your sites. Monique, I'm related to the Lauderdale County, Alabama SHARPs. I have quite a bit of information on the family. I do have Berry's & Dolly's family in my files but I had "Lovie" SHARP. I will tried to go through my files to recheck the name but I'll have to check the microfilm. There are quite a few COX families in Lauderdale. I tried online for a marriage but not after 1890s. I believe I had a later marriage record film at the Family History Center. I'll check and let you know what I find. Adele
Hi, I'm new to this list. I'm researching my great grandma, Dovie Jean SHARP, born abt. 1894.. Her first name may be Louise and Dovie is just a nick name, but I'm not sure about that. She married William Manning COX, born 5 Feb 1888 in Ozark, Franklin, Arkansas. I don't know when they where married. I think that they lived in Oklahoma sometime after they were married, though. I'm looking for a lead on Dovie Jean's parents, for which I have no information. From researching the 1900 Alabama census I have found two possible familes: In Florence, Lauderdale, Alabama Berry SHARP b.Dec 1860 Dolly SHARP b.jul 1862 Mollie SHARP b. mar 1884 James SHARP b. Apr 1886 Eula SHARP b. Mar 1887 Nancy SHARP b. Feb 1888 Roxy SHARP b.Feb 1890 Chas. SHARP b. Jan 1893 "Dovie?" SHARP b. Aug 1894 Carrie SHARP b. Oct 1887 there are other childern with this family, Muncie, Benton, and Carroll. The other family: In Sanders, Jackson, Alabama Thomas H SHARP b. Mar 1865 Emma SHARP b. Apr 1884 Matha SHARP b. Apr 1885 Joel SHARP b. Jan 1892 "Dovie?" SHARP b. Jan 1896 Della SHARP b. May 1901 Unfortunitly, neither is written very clear and I don't feel confident in which is right. Does anyone out there have information that can confirm or deny that they have a child by the name of Dovie or Louise Jean SHARP who married a William Manning COX? Thanks for any help out there. Monique. --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Health - your guide to health and wellness
Barbara and all, In my distant family there was a Sally Maria Sharp, born 10 July 1810, baptized 7 Oct 1810 at Claverack, Columbia County, New York, daughter of Philip Sharp and Elizabeth Pickett. This family later lived near Baldwinsville, Onondaga County, New York, where Philip Sharp was a physician. Among the other children of Philip and Elizabeth, there was a daughter, Eliza Ruth Sharp, who married Jarvis Bailey. This couple lived in Michigan for many years, but later moved to Creed Moor, Texas. Other members of the family also lived in Michigan for awhile. I am trying to determine if a son named John Sharp (whose first wife, Armena Adsit, died in 1840) moved to Michigan and remarried. Back to Sally Maria Sharp - I have no further info on her - don't know if she attained adulthood even. Just thought I'd throw this out in case there was a match. By the way, the feminine name "Oriza" was found in the family of Philip Sharp and Elizabeth Pickett - a very uncommon name and a good clue if anybody else has an Oriza in their family. Bill Hull
Charles, No my great aunt did not have a brother John. They lived in Ionia Co., MI. after 1860. They were still in New York before that. I do have 5 John Sharp's in my family dating from 1642, 1707, 1724, 1767, to 1819 for birthdates of them. If all of us keep comparing notes, we may find some connection.
