Hi Everyone, Anyone have Sharp's from Vermont to Ashtabula Co., OH? Then on to Michigan? Thanks, Monica
My western Pa. Sharps were in country by late 1700's. You can contact me privately at the above address. Harry Sharp [email protected] wrote: > My Sharpes were in New York and some moved on to PA. Are you asking me? I am Connie with relatives in NY.
Helen/Nell Sharp and sister Carrie/Caroline Sharp from Lewis County. Connie
My Sharpes were in New York and some moved on to PA. I don't know where they were before NY. Could we share some information? Rita
Connie, Which New York Sharps are you looking for? Jackie
I have a couple of Sharps in NY and cannot seem to find much on them here; possibility that they came from VT. Connie

Thank you so much, Mr. Sharp. I will check this one out, also. I do remember, now, seeing this program a few years ago. Thank you, again. George, I can't thank you enough for posting your views on the genealogy software question, not because of WHAT it will do but for the fact it will run on NT! I have been searching the computer/software stores hoping 'someday' the genealogy programs would become NT compatible so that I can access my family database while I'm at work since that is where I read the SHARP postings. And to think it's free besides! THANK YOU!! Fellow researchers. Many of us run more than one program as there are advantages and disadvantages to each, as have been pointed out in recent postings. And there is no need to be saddled with a program with serious shortcomings (such as I find Family Tree Maker, even though I run an older version of it for searching CD's) But my main program, and the one perhaps used most extensively used internationally is Brother's Keeper. It is head and shoulders above any other, perhaps because it is written by an accomplished genealogist and constantly improved. It is a "shareware" and can be downloaded for free from his web site (type <Brotherskeeper> on your browser) If you like it, you can register it for about $45 as I recall. And all improvements and upgrades are FREE if you are registered. In addition to being very easy and logical, it allows all sorts of routines to check for errors (even typos) in your data. I have found these to be incredibly useful when the number of people entered gets rather large. I am in no way involved in the marketing of this program. I just felt concern for those who may be fairly new to genealogy and are running the heavily promoted, but clumsy programs mentioned in recent postings. George A Sharp, III
Susan Marston mentioned The Master Genealogist site, www.whollygenes.com, for a trial version download. This site also has a great genealogy software comparison chart. I printed the 8 pages in Excel/97 format, which gives you a lined chart. Bud Sharpe
I like PAF, especially the new one that you can download for free from familysearch.org We had a professional genealogist speak recently at our Genealogy Society meeting and while there are some features that she likes in other programs, she uses PAF almost exclusively because of the long-term reliability. So many other programs and companies come & go, getting swallowed up by others, etc. She is convinced that PAF is here to stay--and it keeps getting better. Karen
Thanks Marty, That is a new one for me. I will check it out too. Shirley, I noticed that you have Alabama Sharps. I have John F. Sharp who was in Chambers Co., Al by 1830. In 1840 he was still in Chambers, 1850, Macon, and 1860 in Russell (which later became Lee). He died in 1889 in Elmore Co., Al. I am descended from his son, John William Henry Sharp, who moved to Ms. Do you think we have any connection? Sandy Sharp Ingram, Texas
I have used the PAF, Family Origins and Family Tree Maker programs and feel that the best one on the available is the Family Origins 8 from the Learning Company. It is 19 or 29 dollars and worth the try. It has great Pedigree Charts, Books, Forms and Reports. You can scan photos into the program as well as edit the documents or photos from within the Family Origins Scrapbooks as well. Researchers working on western Pa. Sharps should know that the Magee History is now in reprint at 800-941-3735, Mechling Press. This history contains several related lines such as the Munnels, Neelys, Elders and the Sharps. A full chapter is devoted to my Sharp Line which came from westmoreland Co. area to Lawrence Co and on to Venango Co. The price is $49.50 plus shipping. I have struck a price of $39.50 with the Press, and I would tell you that I have no incentive to publicize this reprint. The author and cousin is a friend. I hope to find other researchers with research back beyond this line's current progenitor, Joseph Sharp born 1780. Thank you all who have responded with your experiences to the different programs. Jack, This is my experience. I have only used the FTM program since I started my research. I really, really liked it for its ease in use for all those years. But, the more experience I get under my belt with researching my line, the more limited I feel. Sharing my info with others just seems like it takes too many steps, and I feel like I am doing something FTM doesn't want to do. I have picked up the Generations program in my hands a thousand times in the software stores and have really been interested in it. I have downloaded the demo of The Master Genealogist and really like it. They, to me, seem very reasonably priced. It is just that I did't want to have to deal with numerous programs to keep my records, if I can get out of it. But after looking these two programs over, I might have to get both. I just don't know. This is a hard decision. Even though I am getting more experience under my belt, I still lack lots of experience. I feel like a pre-teen trying to "cross over". Sorry, Keith. So far, it looks like my Sharps are in AL around the earlier dates you have mentioned. Then they start appearing in Texas on the 1880 censuses. Although, your Sharp men have all the names I have been finding in my Sharp line. I do have a gap for the year 1870, where I cannot find my line. R.M. Sharp (my ggg grandfather), his son R.A. (my gg grandfather). Both born in AL. R.A. born in Tuscaloosa AL. Sorry I can't help any more on the Sharps. Thank you for the information on the Genealogy programs.
