Dear Douglas Thanks for your Email. Obviously you're being frustrated by too many lists arriving, presumably not helpful ones. Perhaps I have just got myself in deep, as I have just subscribed to both L and D for the 3 counties in England where my own and my husband's families originate. I haven't checked again (too lazy!) but I remember most, if not all, had a "subscribe" and an "unsubscribe" function. So hopefully if you go into the site where you subscribed you may be able to reverse the process. I do wish you the best of luck; it's not much fun being swamped with junk mail is it?! If you lived here you'd really know about it. Unlike the US and UK, the real physical junk mail doesn't have to use the postal service, and many companies deliver, almost every day, heaps of junk mail. We often get the same things twice, but have often found good "bargains" from some of it. Your Email addr doesn't give a novice like me much clue as to where you live (we've only just come onto the Web) but you're looking for names in America so perhaps you live there? VA and NC mean little to me but I presume they're abbreviations of US states (Virginia and North Carolina - bet I'm wrong!). I live in Sydney, Australia; hubby and I migrated here ourselves and our families are all in England - even 1 daughter, temporarily working there. One of my Email replies is titled "Can anyone help a Yank with" -whatever the name is, not one of mine. So I'm asking if anyone can help an Aussie with - well several names. When you get back to me I'll give you them if you're interested, but they're all in the UK. My Sharp(e)s are from Lincolnshire, but our branch of the family has exterminated the name as we've all had only female offspring. We have 2 girls, my mother and her female cousin were only children of the only 2 Sharpes of that family. However, I have already had info from others with Sharpes in that area, perhaps brothers of my great grandfather. It's interesting, isn't it, that the "e" drops from a name. My grandfather's birth cert. has it on, but not his death cert. and I know it was always Sharp as long as I can remember. But you don't want to be bored with my family goings on. Let me wish you the best of luck with your own searching and also with your back. I also have just come out of hospital. I had an umbilical hernia repaired for the second time in 10 months and have a huge scar, at least by today's standards, and have to take things as easy as possible for as long as possible. I also have a bad back as of 25 years and have it more or less under control now, with exercises, medication and herbal remedies, so I can sit quite well if the chair's right, so long as I take an occasional walk. One herbal remedy I use is Pennywort which I have growing all over the place in the back garden. It's free and works wonders. To be dropped from the unwanted lists try the sites where you originally subscribed to them. If "unsubscribe" doesn't work you may have to Email them. I got your name from the Lincolnshire surnames list, probably after "surfing" via "lincolnshire.com" (watch you don't get Lincolnshire in America, I forget which state), but I now have it bookmarked. I am looking for the census lists for Lincs. as one reply to my Emails suggested using them. I've had them up once but can't for the life of me find them again! So if you can help there I'd much appreciate it. All the best in your searches and look after that back, from a fellow sufferer. Hope it all mends soon and you're back in the swing of things. It's good to hear from a Christian - I know if you say you'll get back to me, you will. Hi All, I am looking for more information concerning Margaret Sharpe mentioned in the following excerpts from: http://mvn.net/genealogy/WilliamGaston17781844.htm and her brothers. According to what I have been able to find and was passed down to me, Margaret Sharpe, is not from the same Sharp's as those I trace my direct descent from. Other data I have on her indicates that she was born 1755, died 17 Dec 1811 in New Bern, NC and her brothers (Catholic) came from Cumberland County, England; while my direct lineage is through those from Scotland who were associated with Clan Donnald in Scotland and finally settled in the Abbeville area of SC. "He landed in Newbern, and after a residence of some years, during which he was engaged in the practice of his profession, was married, in May 1775, to Margaret Sharpe, and English lady of the Catholic church. She had come out to North Carolina, on a visit to her two brothers, Girard and Jospeh Sharpe, who were extensively engaged in commerce, and it was during this sojourn, the gallantry of the young Irish physician, succeeded in permanently detaining her in Newbern. William Gaston, their second son, was born on the 19th of September, 1778. His elder brother died very soon after he was born, and before he was three years old, the accidents of war carried off his father." "Mrs. Gaston was thus left alone in America. Her two brothers had died, ..." Hi, Connie I have a Eunice Sharp that is from Conn. and moved to Essex Co., New York and married a Levi Markham in 1821, she is also listed in the 1820 census for Jay Township in Essex Co., NY. I am not sure, but I have a feeling that it is a Cornelius Sharp, he had 13 children, I am trying to find more info on both people. Who are your Sharp's and where from. To the roodwed. I made a mistake on the date of Tom or Thomas Sharp he was born in 1855 instead of 1885. This was the Great grandfather. Not his son. Thanks, Brenda ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Where are my SHARPS from? They were in northern NY state?

I am looking for information on the parents of Thomas J. Sharp born in Louisa County about 1804. On January 3, 1826, he married Sarah Snelson, daughter of Nathaniel Snelson. Also looking for a date of death for Thomas. I am descended from his son, William Nathaniel Sharp born Sept 10, 1827 in Louisa County. Also looking for info on the children of William Sharp(e) and Elizabeth Pettit married Oct. 10, 1803 in Louis County Va. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
Karen: Have you considered that some of the Germans anglicized their names, i.e., my Stein family became Stone. My Dutch Kool family (which means 'cabbage') became Cole (thus 'cole slaw' -- betcha always wondered where that came from! :o) In the Stone/Stein case, it's very interesting -- even up through the mid-1800s, all of the public records are in the name of "Stone". All of the church records -- baptisms, marriages, attendance, etc. -- are "Stein", and it is definitely the same family. Thus, if you are finding land records, census records, etc. (i.e., public records) for Sharp, but no church baptismal, marriage, etc. records, I would recommend changing the parameters of the search to include "Scharf" and "Shaub", etc. Just another conjecture. Priscilla
Susan: The name Uta or Yutta in Germany is very common. Also Otto. Just a conjecture. Priscilla
Okay, super-genealogists, based on the use of given names and country of origin, does anyone have any guesses as to where the name OTA SHARP may have come from? I know of some Blackfeet (Native American) Sharps and they're Scots. Any guess, even the wildest ones would be helpful. Thanks, Susan
