I want to say thank you -- and bless you! -- to Nancy Giles for printing the transcribed newspaper articles. Although none has been about my family thus far, I think we all owe her a debt of gratitude for retrieving these significant pieces of information for us family historians. A very big thank you, Nancy. Keep up the great work! :o) Priscilla

Transcribed and submitted by Nancy Giles Local Couple Weds In Quiet Ceremony In the presence of relatives and friends the marriage of Miss Katherine Burger, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs. John F. Burger, of 37 Indiana avenue and Ivan V. Sharp, of 911 West Main street, son of Mrs. Viola Sharp, of Mt. Vernon, Ill., culminated a school day romance. The ceremony was read this afternoon by Rev. Ressho Robertson at 4 o'clock. Miss Burger was accompanied to the altar by Miss Mildred Haake, of Jefferson City, Mo., a cousin of the bride, and Miss Sally Waterland, of St. Louis. Harold Linkemeyer, of Jefferson City, Mo., a cousin of the bride, and Roy Martin, of Belleville attended the groom. The bride was lovely in a sleeveless gown developed in ivory satin and made in princess style. Her veil of tulle was caught with orange blossoms and fell several yards to the floor forming a train. White roses were employed in her bridal bouquet and long white gloves completed the bridal outfit. The bridesmaids were attired in pastel shades with slippers and headbands to correspond with the color of their frocks, Miss Waterland wearing pink and Miss Haake, green. Both maids carried pink rose buds. Immediately after the church service, a reception for 80 guests was held at the home of the bride's parents where the young couple will live after their return from a short honeymoon trip. Mrs. Sharp has been employed by the American Telephone & Telegraph company of St. Louis and the groom is a clerk in the county recorder's office. The Daily Advocate, Belleville, Illinois Oct 4, 1930
I have a William and Martin Sharp in Meriwether Co, GA 1840-1850. William was born circa 1800. He is on the 1840 census. William's second wife Jane (Digby) is head of household in 1850 census. Martin is on the 1850 census at age 32. The William is the right age. Martin is a little young to fit your family, but the similarity of names intrigues me. Some time around 1855, three of William's children, Martin, and my gggfather, James Jackson Sharp, moved to Coosa Co, AL. I am confident William, Martin, and James are related, but I can not prove how. Any connections? I have not seen the original will of Robert SHARP of Henrico Co., Va. My information is from the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy article, Vol. 30 No. 3, Aug. 1992, by Benjamin T. SHARP. In addition to the seven married daughters, the following are mentioned in Robert SHARPE's will: Son: Robert SHARPE Grandson: Langston SHARPE Son: William SHARP (his children) Grandson: Julius SHARPE Daughter-in-Law: Elizabeth SHARPE Grandsons: William, Isaac and Julius SHARPE Granddaughters: Nancy and Ursula SHARPE William SHARP's children were by his first wife, Martha, who had been executed in 1767 for child murder. Their children were: William, Richard, Julius, Isaac, Nancy, and Ursula. These children were brought up by William's second wife, Elizabeth, who must have been an outstanding person for her father-in-law to have named her his executrix. Robert SHARP undoubtedly had other children not mentioned in the will, either because they had pre-deceased him, or because he had already given them their portion, or for some other reason. An article from the 30 March 1769 "Virginia Gazette" mentions that in that year Robert SHARP was 83 years old and had "156 descendants all now alive." An impressive statement for any era. In his article, Benjamin SHARP speculates on the identity of some of the other children, especially Isaac SHARPE, who died before Dec. 1756, and John SHARPE, the executor of Isaac's will. No Matthew is mentioned, but that doesn't mean there wasn't one. Mary From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [SHARP-L] Will of Robert Sharp of Henrico Co.
