    1. [SHARP-L] Re:William Sharp of Virginia
    2. In a message dated 6/2/2000 8:27:46 AM Central Daylight Time, Roberta writes: << This William Sharp was born in VA about 1790 or '91. He married Sarah Sally HANCOCK, b. about 1799,NC, but I do not know where they were married. So far I have not been able to find a marriage record in Bedford County TN where they were living in 1850 and earlier, but perhaps they married in another Tennessee county or even in North Carolina, where Sarah Hancock's parents lived in Bute Co. NC before moving to Wilson Co. TN. >> and asks if I see a connection to the William Sharp who is brother to my ancestor Edward Sharp of Botetourt County, Va. No, Roberta, I do not believe he is the brother. My Edward died in 1770 and William was involved in settling his estate. So your William would not be old enough. However, I have no further information on this Uncle William, so it is possible that he sired your William...or even that he was the grandfather! The only clue I can give you is to look in Botetourt County for any records of a William Sharp who was living there at the time of my ancestor Edward's death in 1770 and trace from there if you can. Sometimes we have to trace backwards and sometimes forward to see where theses lines meet. Good luck, and let me know if you find anything. love joan

    1. [SHARP-L] Re: Anthony Sharp
    2. [email protected] writes: I believe your Anthony was a nephew to my Anthony Sharp b NC served in Rev War who married Margaret (Peggy) Nelson 1791 Sumner Co, TN. Mary I have been under the impression for some years, from various other researchers and from the Sharp Family Association files, that my Anthony had an uncle Anthony. Question is: Is your Anthony the right uncle? Or could he be a cousin? My Anthony was the son of Edward Sharp, who was living in Botetourt County, Va., at least by 1750 and who married Jane McClellan, daughter of a man who sold land in that area to Edward. Now according to some researchers, Edward was the son of Henry Sharp who was son of an earlier Edward Sharp, all of whom apparently lived at least part of their lives in this country, apparently but not certainly, in Pennsylvania. Edward is supposed to have a brother, Anthony, for whom my Anthony was named. This brother Anthony, (probably born in 1746 but I don't have that documented), lived at least last part of his life in Tennessee and reportedly was a military man, rising to rank of major. Edward also had other brothers, certainly one named William who was an executor of his will, and probably one named Jeremiah. I must tell you, however, that I have been in contact with another researcher who has exactly the same names in his lines and insists that they all went to the Carolinas instead of Virginia and HE can trace an Edward who does not fit mine. I would love to clear this all up. I am sure of Edward and Jane and of their descendants through my Anthony, although I have lost their other two children. If we can get together, please, let's do. love joan

    1. [SHARP-L] John Sharp in Shelby
    2. Michel In answer to your posting on the Sharp list: I do not believe your John Sharp is the John Sharp, brother of Anthony Sharp, that I am looking for. Anthony's brother John was born about 1764 in Botetourt County, Va. Yours would be too young to be the brother, too old to be a nephew, I think. But there could be a link. Anthony did go to Shelby in the early 1790's -- why? Were there relatives accompanying him or already there? Would love to find an existing link. love joan >>>My gr. gr. grandfather was John Sharp, born Shelby County, Ky, February 3, 1779. He married Elizabeth Leatherman. Their son, Henry Leatherman Sharp was born 1823, Vermillion County, Indiana. Could this John Sharp be the one your are searching for???<<<<

TN. In 1830 there were three William Sharp families in Bedford Co. TN, and it was through the Hancocks that I was able to discover which Wm. is in my husband's line. Of course, all these Sharp families had sons named William! William and Sarah's children were: Robert Martin Sharp who married Louisa Jacobs and moved to Missouri. William and Sarah's other children included William H, Samuel H., Elizabeth (m. John BELL), James, John Thomas, and a daughter, Ritter, who married James M. HOOVER, and possibly other offspring. I am trying to identify William's parents and the Virginia County where he was born. Possibly they went to Tennessee by way of Kentucky. Roberta [email protected]

    2. Theron Smith
    3. I recently obtained on loan the 1969 book, EARLY RECORDS. MADISON CO., AL (1808-1840). On p. 78: ".. Out in Sharp's Cove ... was congregated a colony of the Sharp family, who as purchasers at the land sales of 1830, furnish us the names of John, ..., and Patsey Sharp [who m. Henry Scott.]" The land involved here was apparently not added to Madison Co.(organized 1808) until 1826. From other sources, it appears that an older John Sharp (d. 1817) and wife Martha Young was the ancestor of these Sharps. [Patsey, of course, is a dimunutive of Martha.] Now, my question! There was a John Sharp who m. Patsey Carter, daughter of Robert Carter, in Abbeville Co., SC just before the 1790 census. This John appears in the 1790 census. Then he disappears from SC records. Is there any chance that this John and Patsey are the older John and Patsey associated with Madison Co., AL? The fact that one Patsey was a Carter and the other one appears to be a Young augers against this conclusion. We have no clue as to where the John and Patsey of SC went after 1790. Regards, Theron Smith.
