The McCandless family (Barbara and Robert) lived in a tiny village in Central Scotland called Cambus (between Stirling and Alloa) The house was in a terrace owned by the Distillers Company Ltd. and Robert was a Customs and Excise Officer in what became the biggest grain distillery in Scotland. The fields and woods where Jack played as a boy are now covered by an estate of enormous whisky warehouses. He spent the last 15/20 years of his working life there. Barbara died in 1959 aged 67 of some heart condition. The 3 kids, Margaret, Betty and Jack. They all went to the same schools. Margaret married Jack Stein (now deceased) who was also at the same school. They had two children, Ric and Lynda. Ric was a Fleet Air Army pilot for seven years and then became a pilot with British European Airways as they were at theat time. He died of a heart attack in his early thirties. This was an enormous surprise to everybody because he had been having annual aircrew medical examinations for some 12 years or more. He and his wife had 3 kids. Lynda is married to Tim Greensides. Tim was the senior communications rating in the Royal Navy when he retired two years ago. Lynda had also been in the RN, finishing as a Petty Officer Wren when she married Tim. They have a daughter Louise who is now married and living in Peterburgh. Margarets first husband, Jack Stein, died of a heart attack and much later in life, she married her second husband, Tom Laird. Margaret died of cancer in 1988 aged 67. Tom is now about 77 and is very frail. He lives in a retirement home in Bo'ness, spending most of his time in bed. Betty was married to Jim Kennedy who she met while they were both in the services during the war. The marriage was not a success and they separated in 1955 and divorced fairly quickly. Their daughter Fiona was born in 1956 and Betty raised Fiona on her own. Both Margaret and Betty were teachers for a number of years but Betty left teaching and became a Civil Servant in the DHSS until she retired. Betty died of secondary breast cancer in 1987 aged 65. Fiona lives and works as a dentist in Bright. Fiona's first marriage ended in divorce and she is now married to Mark Beland, a computer programmer. ii. BARBARA ELIZABETH MCCANDLESS, b.
