If you are a cousin, email me and I will send it to you. Goodnews@inebraska.com SHANNON Contrary to popular opinion this name does not derive from, the River Shannon. In Fact, the name has an english origin meaning the canon from the Middle English chanon. In Chaucers "Canterbury Tales there is mention of "Monk or frere Preest or Chanon." 'The canon-house near Ulverston, England, once attached to Conishead Priory, is now a farm stead called Shannon-House but styled Chanon-House in the church registers of the 18th century. The first of this name in our records is Isaac Shannon who was born about 1771 in Pennsylvania, perhaps in Cumberland County. He was married 1 February 1791 in the Big Spring Presbyterian Church in Cumberland County to Jane Porter, and both of them were received into the membership of that congregation in June 1791. Shortly after that time they must have moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania. It is known that Isaac had a mill on Shannons Creek in Washington County and that it was washed away in 1792. However, on 4 February 1793 he is still listed on the rolls of the 6th Battalion of Cumberland County Militia. On 10 January 1794 Isaac bought 213 acres 110 perches of land on Cross Creek in Washington County for 163 pounds 17 shillings from Isaac Starrett. This land was part of a patent originally held by Sarah Martin and bordered on the West Virginia line. Isaac Shannon is listed among those who took the oath of allegiance during the Whiskey Rebellion on 11 September 1794. The 1803 census for Washington County, Pennsylvania, lists the following in the residence of Isaac Shannon: 4 males under 10, 2 males 26 to 45, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 26 to 45. The same year he is listed on the tax list for Cross Creek township. On 15 April 1805 Isaac sold all the land he purchased in 1794 for $7 per acre. Two years later, on 5 March 1807, he purchased 177 acres for $40O in Jefferson County, Ohio, from Galbreath Stuart. On 4 February 1808 he sold 15 acres off this tract for $45. This land was in Short Creek Township. Isaac and Jane Shannon sold 161 acres of their land on 10 February 1813 for $1,250, and on 5 June 1813 the remaining 132 perches were sold for $6. 60 to John Caldwell. On June 1815 Isaac and Jane Shannon were admitted to the Beech Springs Presbyterian Church, Harrison County, Ohio, on certificate. The records of this church contain several references to him and his family from this time on. A few of these follow. 1815-1816 baptisms: Isaac Shannon - 3. May 1822 Isaac Shannon was restored to communion. September 1822 Isaac Shannon was suspended for drunkedness. 1830-1831 baptisms: Isaac Shannon Jun. (Jr?) 2. Jane Porter Sharnnon died 18 June 1820 in Jefferson County, Ohio, and was buried at the Beech Spring Church. The 1820 census for Jefferson County lists Isaac Shannon with 1 male under lO, 3 males 16-25, 1 male 46 or older, 1 female under 1O, and 1 female 10-15. On 27 September 1821 in Harrison County, Ohio, Isaac married Isabella Hagerty who is listed as one of the early settlers in that county. It is not known whether she died or they were divorced, but apparently there were no children by this marriage. On 12 January 1826 in Harrison County, Ohio, there is a marriage recorded for Isaac Shannon to Sarah Stone. However, this Isaac could be the son of Issaac. There is no further information available on this marriage. Isaac did marry again, however, on 30 June 1837 in Harrison County, Ohio, to Rachel Reed. According to his will she bore him a son and apparently died sometime before 1845 when he wrote his will. The 1840 census for Harrison County, Ohio, shows the following listing for the residence of Isaac Shannon: 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-3O, 1 male 70-80, and 1 female 40-50. Isaac Shannon died 20 September 1848 and is buried at Beech Spring Church beside his first wife Jane Porter. By reconstructing the various census enumerations it appears that Isaac Shannon may have been the father of as many as eleven children. Only the names of five are known however: 1. Mary 5hannon, born about 1798 in Pennsylvania; married (1) 20 April 1820 in Jefferson County, Ohio to Samuel Reed and (2) 17 November 1836 in Harrison County, Ohio, to Andrew Clark; died 5 April 1878 in Page County, Iowa. 2. John Shannon- baptized 5 June 1800 in Cross Creek Presbyterian Church, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He may have married 3 July 1828 in Jefferson County, Ohio to Jane Johnson. 3. Robert Shannon baptized September 1802 at Cross Creek Presbyterian Church, Washington County, Pennsylvania. 4. Isaac Shannon baptized 14 April 1805 Cross Creek Presbyterian Church, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He may have married 12 January 1826 in Harrison County, Ohio, to Sarah Stone. 5. Leslie Shannon, born about 1838-184O. He is mentioned in his fathers will as being the son of Rachel.
