    1. [SHANNON-L] Shannon/Ewing marriages
    2. Pete Hamilton
    3. My thanks to Jim Shannon and Michael Shannon for their responses to my query regarding marriages between the Shannon and Ewing families. Jim, my direct ancestors in this branch of my family tree were in Davidson County, TN, not Wilson County. However, as you note, the two counties are adjacent, and I'm not surprised to learn that some of their descendants were in Wilson County. Andrew Ewing, husband of Susannah Shannon Ewing, was a signer of the Cumberland Compact, establishing the first government in Middle Tennessee. He served as the first County Court Clerk from about 1780 until his death in 1813. Nathan Ewing, my 3-great grandfather, son of Andrew and Susannah Shannon Ewing, succeeded his father as Davidson County Clerk and served until his death in 1830. (Two of Nathan's sons, Edwin Hickman Ewing and Andrew Ewing, served as U.S. Congressmen in the pre-Civil War era. Jim, I have a marriage between Elizabeth Ewing, daughter of Andrew and Susannah Shannon Ewing, to Thomas Shannon. I show that Elizabeth was born 14 March 1779 in Rockingham Co, VA, so I would guess that her marriage would be in the late 1790s or early 1800s. It would undoubtedly have been in the Nashville area. I show that Thomas and Elizabeth Ewing Shannon had 8 children: William, Thomas, Franklin, Nathan, George, Jane, Sarah and Susan. I don't have birth dates for these children, and the fact that the girls are listed last suggests that the birth order may not be as shown. I have no information regarding the lives of these children. Jim, is it possible that your grandfather is descended from one of these children? _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
