Darlene, thanks for taking the time to tell the sad tale of the trouble you had with false info on the Shannons....all the time, energy and money. Just a shame. Again, thanks. Dottie
I am looking for any information about my grandmother Elizaabeth Josephine Shannon who was born Sept l0, 1873 in Moosic, Pa. She was orphaned as a very young teenage, and married my grandfather John Wright Potts and died in l922 in New Jersey. Does anyone know of her parents or any other info?
Elmer "Pete" & Sarah Boydwere m. 5 Aug 1885 in Bayard, Highland Twp, Gruthrie Co. After haveing Guy W, Ralph W. & Mae/May, Sarah b. 13 Oct 67 d. 21 Dec 1891. The 3 children were raised by her mother & sister, their in Bayard. Pete moved into Riichland Twp. & remarried 22 May 1900, & lived in Jamacia, until his death 12 Apr 1917. He was a druggest, with his own Drug Store. Guy W. b.16 Feb 1887, wereabouts was unknown at the time of his fathers death. I found him, at age 40, on the 1920 in Okahomia City. He was married, wife Jennie F. 40. Occupation makes no sence to me, it says: Studrnt-by Gov's. Ca. Deaths 1940-87 gives me: Guy W. Shannon b. 4 Feb 1888 Ia. d. 8 Jan 1965 in Los Angeles, mothers maiden name Boyd. Ralph W. b. 4 Apr 1888 married 2 Oct 1914 to Stella Ethel Ashpole in Gruthrie Center, Ia. Article about there marriage was found in the Bayard Advocate 8 Oct 1914. It says that he went by "Rick". 1920 census Bayard list Ralph W. 22 a Barber in a shop. Stella is 23. 1930 Censu for Carrroll Co. Union Twp. Coon Rapids, Ia. list W. Ralph 39 m at age 24, Barber in a shop. Stella is 32 m at age 17, is a Beauty Specialist in a beauty shop. SSDI Records gives me Stella b 8 May 1891 d Jan 1981 Residence Coon Rapids Last Benefit Manning. Union Twp. Cemetery Carroll Co. list gives me Rick Shannon b 1889 d 1960. It also has a Ted Shannon b.1897 d. 1981. I have no idea where he came from. A couple of women, that grew up in Coon Rapids have contactedd me & told me that there was a basement shop, on Main St. that housed both Stella & Teds shops in different rooms. One has talked to her father & he only remembers Ted as being the barber. That was in the late 1930's or early 40's. Mae Shannon m. 24 Dec 1912 Lester W. Brumbaugh, in Panora. At the time of there marriage, he was a paper hanger & painter. At the time of her fathers death in 1917 she had a son Jimmy. At the time of her father in-laws death in 1939, Lester had died & there were 2 sons, James Henry Brumbaugh of Des Moines & Russell Ward of Pontaic, Mi. It also list a Maelene Alice Brumbaugh of Des Moines. I assume she is the daughter of James. I've been unable to find any of this family on a census. In one article it say Mae was in Panora in 1917, her fathers obis says Perry. Does anyone out there relate to any of these 3 children, or know anything about them? If so I would apprecate hearing from you. Than you Lois Stegal

Hi, I am forwarding your message to the Shannon list. You might want to subscribe to it. There should be some connections on the list as well as documentation. My info is from Dexal Shannon's Book. If you don't here from anyone on the list email me again and I will see what I have in hard copy. Jimmy ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Fitzgerald wafitz@charter.net To: Sent: Saturday, August 24, 2002 10:20 PM Subject: Finis W. Shannon Jimmy, You have made my day !! On Roots Web, "Jimmy Kerr's Genealogy", Entries: 14894 updated June 27, 2002, ID: 11870 Anna Rountree and ID: 1423 Finis W. Shannon. Your info. states that Finis W. Shannon married Anna Rountree. I have for sometime believed this to be true but have not been able to find a record that would verify it. In fact your info. is the 1st and only that I have found that supports my belief. I would be interested to know where you found the info., maybe it will lead me to more. My belief is based on info. found in the will of John Roundtree Sr., father of Anna. The will indicates that Anna married a Shannon but does not give his first name. Anna died ca. 1829-30 and left 2 or 3 small daughters for her mother Jealsy Thompson Rountree to raise. One of those girls was Martha Ann Shannon, my g-grandmother.. Do you have any other information about Finis W. and Anna's family such as children names, dates, etc.? According to information posted on the internet, The History of Greene Co. Missouri 1883 (1831) by R. I. Holcomb ,quote --------"in the spring of 1830. The same spring Finis W. Shannon came from Williamson county, Tennessee, and settled on section 21." History and Directory of Springfield and North Springfield, George S. Escott. (1831) "In the same year, Finis W. Shannon, brother-in-law of Joseph Miller, settled just below the Uncle Joe Rountree place, on Wilson creek, where he soon died and was buried. He was the first person ever buried in the neighbor- hood,--" Early Days in Greene County, Missouri by Ed Stout "Finis Shannon arrived, and soon died, thereby attaining fame simply by becoming the first white person buried in the neighborhood." I believe this to be the same Finis W. Shannon that married Anna in Maury County, TN. because of his connection with Rountrees and Millers, all from Maury Co, TN. Joseph Miller was married to Anna Rountree's sister who also died leaving 2 small boys that were mentioned in John Rountree's will. If you have any info. such as marriage date and place or anything about Finis W. & Anna Shannon, I would appreciate receiving it. Thanks, Bill Fitzgerald Clarksville, TN.
Darlene, I too have taken others info for the gospel. You can't do it. You must do the research yourself, other peoples stuff is only a guide. hi Darlene, yes.....sadly, this putting forth of misinformation happens all too often. And it sets our research back years & years. I too, had that happen in another one of my family lines after years of accepting what one seemingly accurate researcher had publicly posted & published. But when I began preparing a booklet for a "first cousins reunion" I could not match up the documents with what she had stated. Over & over I went only to discover that this particular researcher (& distant cousin) had so badly wanted to be descended from a Revolutionary War hero, that on paper she had twisted the facts to show that she was. And of course, it all looked so wonderful on paper & I was so green about doubting anyone else's research, that I accepted it for many years. So I learned a most valuable lesson.......I use someone else's research as a tool as any other research tool. Use it, but verify all facts for yourself by getting the actual documentation. I don't think I will ever get her published words completely gone because occasionally I still get letters refering to her research. The genealogy groups around the country that publish quarterlies do such a wonderful job, but lots of misinformation get published in them. That's where most of her articles were published & sworn to by her descendants.......hard to change everyone's mind even when you have documentated proof otherwise. Oh well, can't win them all. So, while many of us feel for you Darlene & your precious research time wasted, smile & know the valuable lesson you have learned.......don't trust anyone's work but your own. Joyce
