Biographical Album, McLean County 1887 William Shannon, the only harness maker in the town of Heyworth, is located on West Main street where he has carried on his business since the spring of 1870. He has a permanent and finely established trade, and by his straightforward business methods has secured the respect and esteem of the community. He was formerly a resident of Bloomington, where he located in 1849, and followed his trade for a period of twenty years. Mr Shannon was born in Shelby County, Kentucky Feb. 7. 1813. His father, Hugh Shannon, was a native of Ireland and came to the United States when a young man and settled in Virginia. He was there married to Miss Sarah Kendall, whose father was a farmer, and who became a resident of Shelby County, Ky., which afterward remained the home of both our subject's parents during their lifetime. At the time of their decease both were well stricken in years, and had built up a good record by their honest lives and kindly deeds. Of their eleven children our subject was the third in order of birth. He grew to manhood in his native county, and there learned his trade under the instruction of Harris Hickman. After serving an apprenticeship of three years he set out as "jour" and in due time took unto himself a partner and helpmeet in the person of Miss Nancy B. Ritchey, their union occurring on the 2d of April, 1835. Mrs Shannon was born and reared in Scott County, Ky. of parents who were born, reared and married in Virginia, her father being engaged in farming pursuits. Later they removed to Owen County, Ky., where the father died about 1836. The mother, who was formerly Miss Catharine Bronson, after the death of her husband came to Illinois and died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs Sarah Tschus, when seventy-seven years old. Mr and Mrs Shannon of this notice became the parents of seven children, of whom George F and Mary C are deceased. Those living are Sarah, Samuel R, John T, Irene, and William B, all married and settled in comfortable homes. Mr Shannon followed his trade in Owen County and Covington, Kenton, Ky., for some time after his marriage. Thence he removed to Bloomington, Ill. where he established a good business and was successful. In Heyworth he had been President of the Village Board, and is Democratic in politics. He is greatly interested in the cause of temperance, and of late years has identified himself with the Prohibition movement. Hi Joyce, Glad you were able to get in there. It was tried and access couldn't be attained. So I went to http://www.ohiohistory.org and did a search. The also have Archives, to when I searched "Shannon" several listings came up. One company had a Samuel Shannon listed as a musician, interesting! I noted that there was also a Thomas Shannon's company. These unfortunately are not of my line. My line's of Shannon go from VA to MD to AR-MO and on to Ok. It's my VA-MD Shannon that is my block. My gggg-grandfather who supposedly was born in VA then moved and had issue in MD married to a Skinner. I can find this on census, but that is it. To me, MD's records are hard to come by without a lot of costs. When aggrevated by my blocks, I try to help other's with their lines hoping I somehow trip over mine! Guess we will hang in there for that brick to crumble, huh? Tamara
Doneva, Hugh Shannon came from county Antrim in the 1780's to Virginia as a child. He then married Catharine Bronson in Kentucky. And the family moved to Illinois. Thank you Doneva. I guess they should know where they were born but I sure was leaning toward PA. Actually I have the 1880 census. I haven't done a lot of work on Samuel, not even sure he was my uncle but I'll start on him, because logic says he was my ggrandfathers brother and I might find some good clues by researching him Joyce

We found there is no perfect place and when I collected a lot of stuff was the 3 1/2 years we lived in a 30 foot travel trailer, and as my husband says, "followed the sun". We were in either Florida or South Texas in the winters and everyplace else in the summers. Living in RV parks can be very boring so I spent a considerable time in libraries. I likened living in RV parks to Girl Scout Day Camp and I outgrew that when my little Girl Scout grew up. Since I still don't know who my Shannons were back past my second great-grandfather, someday all this stuff might come in handy. In the meantime I try to help others. Welthy

I too have been on the SHANNON list for several years, and nothing, not even a nibble. My Shannon's originated from Kiltimagh, County Mayo, Ireland. Ann
Sending you this from Rossford, Ohio..on the banks of the Maumee River at the mouth of Lake Erie, part of our close local history of the battle commandeered by General Oliver Perry Hazard: http://www.ohiohistory.org/onlinedoc/war1812/roster/txt/page0145.txt This roster does have a Samuel listed in this dragoon roster, also a John Shannon. Everyone has ideas.. Tamara
I am so happy to see Shannons talking about Pennsylvania again. My Shannons were in Terre Haute, IN at least by 1842 and I have been told that they came from KY and also that they came from PA. I can't get anybody to give me documentation so who knows? There were several Shannon families living on one street in Terre Haute and I think they were all brothers. If anybody is interested I'll find my notes. I have a theory and will probably hate myself for posting it on the internet but it has been driving me crazy for five years. Tell me what you think. My grandfather was William Perry Shannon (m. Susan Ike, 10/20/1842 in Vermillion Co., IN), somebody told me he was b. July 1816 in KY but with no back up for that. My aunt and a cousin who did research over 30 yrs ago say the family is from PA. There was a Samuel Shannon (m. Mahala Payton, 9/17/1835 in Fayette Co., IN) in Terre Haute living on the same street. This is what makes me crazy: Grandpa's name was William Perry Shannon, he named a son Oliver Perry Shannon. Samuel Shannon had a daughter named Olive, another reason that I believe William and Shannon were brothers. There are other reasons. I can't help but think that William and Samuel were brothers and that they had possibly fought under Oliver Perry Hazard, probably in the War of 1812 at Lake Erie. Perhaps their father came to America as a British soldier during the Revolution. I had not realized it until I saw a documentary a couple of weeks ago but the Irish joined the British Army a lot during the time of the American Revolution. Somewhere there must be a list of the sailors who fought with Hazard but I own my own business and have two small grandchildren who think they live here so I don't have time to do the research that I hope I live long enough to enjoy. I know there were a lot of Shannons who fought in the Revolution but it seems impossible to find out where they fit into the family. I hope somebody has ties to this branch or suggestions. Joyce: Your Samuel and Mahalia SHANNON appear on the 1850 census in Clinton twp., Vermillion co., IN. Samuel is a 38 year old Farmer and claims he was born in Kentucky. Mahalia is 27 and also claims to be born in KY. Their oldest son, Louis Y. Shannon, age 15, was born in Indiana. Daughter Matilda A. is 10 years old and also born in IN. Youngest child, William, age 4 is also born in Indiana. The 1870 census finds them still in Clinton twp., Vermillion co., IN. Samuel and Mahalia still claim to having been born in KY. Samuel is 57 and Mahalia is 39. (somebody can't add). They have 3 more children: (the first set of kids have probably moved on)...Mary E. is 16, born IN; Amanda M. is 13 and Jesse is a 10 year old boy. In the next household (Catherine VanNest) is a Theodore SHANNON, age 30, Day Laborer, born in OH. The previous page has a Jackson SHANNON age 41, Farmer, b. OH. Wife: Mary I., age 38, b. OH, son; George M., age 16, b. Indiana, William, age 13, b. IN., Jesse, age 11. (H'mmm, the two families named their kids the same names. I would certainly guess they are related. The 1880 census is available free, on-line at www.familysearch.org Perhaps you'd like to fish for them there. Hi, I also have a Hugh Shannon (great, great, great uncle) who came from Ballymena, Layle Parish, County Antrim, Ireland. He settled in Hastings county in Ontario Canada. I have 8 Hugh Shannons in my family, the oldest one was born November 1820. Is there any connection to your family? Marie

If this is near Hamilton. Ontario, there is probably a connection. My ancestor left for Illinois in about 1855. He had at least one brother who stayed in Canada. I have a monograph from an ancestor about the Robert Shannon immigration. I will send it to your personal address to see if there is a connection.
