Mike, thanks for replying. Russell Reid had the book and two others by the author. He tells me it was William Shannon and that it was thought to be the son of John and Sarah Reid. Are you a descendant of the John and Sarah's family? Gary, I have a copy of the Carstens book that you mentioned as well as his "The Calendar and Quartermaster Books of General George Rogers Clark's Fort Jefferson, Kentucky, 1780-1781." The book you referred to has numerous references to Capt. William Shannon, including numerous records of his receiving land warrants for the recruitment of men for General Clarks force. It is believed that he was the Capt. William Shannon who, through land warrants, became a major land holder in what became Shelby Co. KY. He donated the land for the courthouse, and thus stimulated the growth of the town of Shelbyville within his holdings. Shannon was fatally injured in a tavern fight on the 4th of July of 1794 and died the next day. There is no record of him having married and his will makes no reference to a wife or children. The will does identify enough of his family to give us confidence that he was the son of John Shannon and Sarah Reid. Several of Williams brothers and sisters also settled around Shelbyville. If anyone has access to the following book and can do a quick lookup please email me. The book is "The personnel of George Rogers Clark's Fort Jefferson and the civilian community of Clarksville, Kentucky, 1780-1781; based on the lost vouchers of George Roger Clark" written by Kenneth Charles Carstens, Murray St. Univ. Summary web sites mention that one of Gen. Clark's several captains was a Mr. Shannon. Gen. Clark captured the British forts at Vincennes and around St. Louis in 1778 and 1779 that had belonged to the French before 1764. He also built a fort in western Kentuck per the instructions of VA. Governor Thomas Jefferson in 1780 just a few miles south of the merging Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. The town around that fort was named Clarksville. (Not the same as modern Clarksville, Ky.) Fort Jefferson lasted only about 14 months before it was abandoned but it has been recently discovered that it was first staffed by over 500 soldiers plus at least that many more as family. I would like to know if the book lists Captain Shannon's first name and maybe family. Thanks, Gary Shannon Looking for parents of Thomas Shannon b. abt. 1770 d. 1834. Lived in Davidson Co., TN prior to 1822, he then moved to Hardin and Decatur Co., TN.

Linda, Are you aware of a Hugh Shannon that is listed at Ruddell's Station in Kentucky 6/24/1780 when Ruddell's and Martin Forts were attacked by Indians and British forces. Five Hundred people were captured and marched to Detroit. A few were killed in the fight for the forts. Many died on the way to Detroit and others eventually returned. Hugh Shannon was listed as living there, but not as captured which might mean he was killed at the fort, or the way north, or wasn't there at the time. I failed to list the wed site, but noted an information source: Halderman Papers - Microfilm A-765 Add Miss 21, 845. You probably can find the site in short order by using google and searching for "Hugh Shannon" + "Ruddell's". A James Shannon, age 40 in another part of the same site was listed as a prisoner in Montreal, taken at home, not at arms in VA, 6/1780.
