    2. Hi Melinda I have a lot of information on the Shannons from Andrew on down to the present generation. If you would let me know what you need I would love to share what I have. I have been searching for the Shannons for a long time and believe me it has been a challenge but I have found that being on the Shannon list has helped a lot. The the only one of James and Mary's children that I don't have a lot on is their eldest daughter Elmyra (Myra). I have a e-mail address of a LLewallen in Scott County that I will write to to see if I can get information on that family. I don't have a lot of time since I work full time and I am raising my two grandchildren which is a full time job in itself but I find that working on my family generations helps me to relax. Let me hear from you soon. Jane

    1. [SHANNON-L] Re: SHANNON-D Digest V03 #53
    2. Hello Melinda, Thanks for all your information. I had found the information about the Morgan County Shannons and considered them as a possible connection since there were so many Wrights and W. R.'s. Because of the age difference and the fact that that one was called Preston I felt like they were relatives but through another family somehow. The fact that Right was listed differently 4 different times helps a little in figuring out what his name was. My Grandmother Artie Ada Shannon Ledford was born 11/15/1871. Her name on her HCTN marriage record was Arta L. A. Shannan. On her death record her father's name was listed as William Shannon and her mother was listed as Effie. Artie died 10/4/1948. James S. Shannon was born in 1874 to 5/29/1924. The date on his stone does not match the info (1877) on the 1900 HCTN census but I know it is him. He married Lydia Bowers. She is buried in the Beason Cemetery near him under the heading of L B Shannon 3/17/1884 to 1/1/1961 On James death record, his father is listed as W. R. Shannon and his mother is listed as Isabelle. The marriage record for Right says, "Wright Shannon married Ibbie Shannon Sept 3 1868 in HCTN" The only Isabelle Shannon I was able to find was connected with the Pleasant Shannon family but she was too young to have been married in 1868. In the 1910 HCTN census I found a possible match but the dates are off 1910 HCTN census 1900 HCTN census age was W.R.Shannon 69 w Right Shannon 59 wife Idelie 62 Ibbie 42 dau Myrtle 18 Myrtle 12 This could be the same family. Who ever took the census back then made a lot of mistakes. My GGrandfather James A (Archie) Ledford was listed as being 34 in the 1900 HCTN census and 51 in the 1910 HCTN census. That is a big difference. There was even a difference in their children's ages too. Artie (the wife) was listed as 28 then 35. Son Frederick was listed as 12 and then 17. Son Jay was listed as 4 and then 14. His was the only one that was correct both times. I believe that James A. Ledford 10/28 1858 to 5/24/1918 (Artie's Husband) is the same as Archibald Ledford in the 1880 Polk County Census. James A had a sister, Georgia Ledford Shields, who was born in 1880. Archibald Ledford had a sister named Georgia born in 1880 too. There is 21/22 year age difference between both sets of brother and sister. I sent off for Georgia's death record and after 6 weeks of waiting they returned my check and said I couldn't have the death certificate. I haven't tried again. So far I haven't been able to find the proof. As for Oliver Shannon, I didn't know he existed. I had heard about the others. Mary married a George Bolden. He had a son named Edwin, I think. I haven't been able to find anything for him. Mary died in the early 1930s and George married again. Myrtle Shannon married a Will Richardson. He had been married before. Richardson's daughter, Imogene, from an earlier marriage, married Zanis Ledford my grandfather 's brother and son of James A. Ledford. Confusing Huh? Do you know Shyde@bellsouth.net? I saw on the Genforum where he said he was kin to James S. Shannon and Lydia Bowers too but I haven't been able to get through to him. This was in a query #579 re: Shannon-Lucinda Roach HCTN Thanks again for your time. Linda

    1. Re: Re: [SHANNON-L] SHANNON, Wm Right Hamilton County Tn
    2. Hi, It's Melinda again with another thought. My G-G-Grandfather, William Riley Shannon had a younger brother named Wright or Right. Their parents were James and Mary Hamby Shannon. Note those two given names. According to my records, and the 1850 Morgan Co. Census, this boy "Wright" was 5 years old at the time, making his birth date circa 1845. This same fellow is living at home and listed on the 1860 Morgan Co. Census, but is referred to as Preston Wright, age 13. He appears again, still at home, on the 1870 Morgan Co. Census as "Right" but at age 22. However, the problem is that there is no mention on the 1870 census of an Ibbie, Isabelle or Effie living with this family and according to your email, Right and Iffie were married in 1868. Do you know where? Unfortunately, I have no other record of this Right Shannon after 1870. BUT, what really stands out are the given names of the first two children of Right and Ibbie: James and Mary. Perhaps named after their grandparents? Your thoughts? Melinda > > From: <mglfreel@bellsouth.net> > Date: 2003/07/06 Sun PM 03:48:42 EDT > To: SHANNON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [SHANNON-L] SHANNON, Wm Right Hamilton County Tn > > Linda, > > I'm 99% sure that I have a match for you. The question is where because there are several Rights, Wrights and William R.'s in my Shannon line! I am pretty sure that if your Right was born in 1841, he is the great grandson of William and the grandson of Andrew Shannon, but which of Andrew's sons fathered him? Or he could have been fathered by one of Andrew's brothers, two of whom married Scarborough sisters. > > Westly was the fourth son of Andrew, and as you found in the 1850 Anderson Co. census, he did have a son named William R. but his date of birth would have been in 1846. We all know that a person's birth year can change with the next census, but I think 5 years is too much of a variance to pursue Westly's line. Another piece of info: the name "Right" or "Wright" in this Shannon line is almost always attached to the given names of Preston or Pleasant, rather than William. I am also thinking that we need to check out the Scott County line as well as Anderson and Morgan. > > Another question: what was Ibbie's maiden name? Did I read correctly that her maiden name was also Shannon? If that's so, then that's a strong clue to pursue. > > Please take a look at my website, "The Shannon Family of East TN." (link below) and click on the 8th-9th generation. In the meanwhile, I will check some hard records for you - especially Scarborough and Oliver. (I noticed one of Right and Ibbie's children was named "Oliver" and I know one of the Shannon sons married a Susan Oliver in the early 1800's.) I have also heard from some folks living in Hamilton County and will check those notes also. > > Best regards, I'll be back in touch! > Melinda Shannon Freels > > > > > From: DubleS2@aol.com > > Date: 2003/07/06 Sun AM 02:21:44 EDT > > To: SHANNON-L@rootsweb.com > > Subject: [SHANNON-L] SHANNON, Wm Right Hamilton County Tn > > > > Hi, my name is Linda and I am doing research on my gggrandparents. 2. Linda, I'm 99% sure that I have a match for you. The question is where because there are several Rights, Wrights and William R.'s in my Shannon line! I am pretty sure that if your Right was born in 1841, he is the great grandson of William and the grandson of Andrew Shannon, but which of Andrew's sons fathered him? 2. Hi, my name is Linda and I am doing research on my gggrandparents. I finally found their names on a couple of death records and that led me to the 1900 census here in Hamilton County Tn. Some of the names are very similar to the Shannon's in Morgan County Tn but I can't make a connection. The year of birth is the same as Wm Riley Shannon but the rest of the info doesn't fit. I can't help but think that there is a link there some where to this group though. I found a Wm R Shannon in nearby Anderson County Tn 1850 Census that is a strong possibility Shannon,   Westley  36  farmer  Tn               Susannah   32                      xxtye   14                 James H    12                 Alexander      7               William R     4                Pleasant      3               Willie C      11/12 Maybe you might have heard of my Shannons. I will list the info below: Wright Shannon married Ibbie Shannon Sep 3 1868 ( the online date is incorrect by 2 months) 1900 Hamilton County  Tn Census  Third Civil District    3   42 sheet 34 line 624 Shannon,Right    w m  June 1841  59 married 30 yrs            All in Tn  Tn Tn                Ibbie     w f    Feb  1858 42   6 children  4 at home                James   w m  Mar 1877  23  farm laborer                Mary      w f    Nov 1883  16                Oliver    w m  Jun 1885   14                Myrtle    w f    May 1888  12   (date was hard to read) My ggrandmother, their other daughter, was married at this time to James A Ledford Her name was Artie Ada Shannon b 1871  A marriage  record in Hamilton Co Tn lists her as Arta L A Shannan Have you heard of any of these Shannons?  The early 1870 HCTN records were destroyed by fire. On the death certificate of Artie Shannon Ledford, her parents were listed as William and Effie Shannon On Artie's brother 's (James S Shannon) death record the parents are listed as W R Shannon and Isabell. James S Shannon was married to Lydia Bowers Shannon.  Myrtle Shannon married Will Richardson. Mary Shannon married a George Bolden according to my mother.  She died in the early 1930's.   Most of the family lived in the Red Bank- White Oak  Tn area. If you have information on this family I would love to hear from you. Thank you for your time, Linda
