Hello my Shannon friends: Mike recently gave us some excellent Shannon research links and contacts, but I wanted to add another one. I recently returned from Northern Ireland on a trip with the East TN Historical Society. (I have been researching my Shannon line for 25 years!) Anyway, I was thrilled to find a new place for obtaining primary sources and records - The Centre for Migration Studies at the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh. They have an extensive database and lots of genealogy material that you cannot find in the states. I had quite a bit of luck but unfortunately, not enough time. I'm going back next year though! I believe that one can send inquiries and perhaps access some material through their website: http://www.qub.ac.uk/cms/ Incidently, Antrim in Northern Ireland is the most beautiful place that I've ever been! We were treated like royalty there and felt absolutely safe at all times. I highly recommend a visit to N. Ireland for the serious Scots-Irish genealogist. There are still lots of Ulster Scots Shannon families in Antrim - they are descendants of the Scots-Irish Shannons that first came to America in the early 1700's, not the Irish "Shanahan/Shannon" line that came over in the mid-1800's. If you'd like to see some photos and read my trip journal, please visit my website: "The Shannon Family of East Tennessee." http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-shannonfamily Best Regards, Melinda Shannon Freels > > From: Ed Shannon <Shannoned@earthlink.net> > Date: 2003/07/24 Thu PM 10:31:14 EDT > To: SHANNON-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [SHANNON-L] SHANNON/MARRS LINE > > The connection i need is in Ireland and these seem to stay with one > line. She was raised the foster child of Rex and May Dickens. She was born in Wichita, Kansas September 21, 1932 the daughter of Dorthy Lemon and Harry Goodwin, at the salvation home for unwed mothers. Dorthy was the eldest child of Bion lemon and Margret Sells, and Margret Sells was, I have just found out, the daughter of Nancy Shannon and Valentine Sells.. (I have just found out today from census records). I also just recieved my mothers original birth certificate today in the mail, so I am a little overwhelmed with all this new information. If you could tell me something of our families history and ancestry I would be very interested. ie who we are and where we come from. What our religion and cultural herritage is. I was raised Jewish in Seattle Washington and born Whimsy Anderson in march 1963. My mother's name was changed from Charlotte Beatrice Lemon to June Dickens by her foster family. She was later moved to Sumner WAshington where she grew up. She married my father sometime around 1954 and they lived for a time in Sanfranscio and Washington State. Thanks again. Whimsy Anderson
I am looking for Mary's parents. Mary's COUSIN is Govenor Wilson Shannon--whose parents are George Shannon and Jane Milligan. Now if I can find out from that --I might be able to find her parents. I'm at a real brick wall and seem stuck on this one. Thank you, Beverly
Jane Milligan Was born in 1762, if Mary Shannon was born in 1773. I do not see how she could be Jane's child.
Still trying to find the parents of Mary Shannon 1773-1843 married Joseph McCune1793 married Samuel Bigger 1805 Mary is a cousin of Wilson Shannon 1802-1877 Wilson was Governor of Ohio from 1838-1844 His parents were: George and Jane Milligan Shannon Thank you for any information Beverly bevmc34@aol.com

Hi, I don't know. There is a complete tree on Rita Zieber's site you might want to look at it. Mike http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/z/i/e/Rita-J-Zieber/ODT1-0001.html

I think some of those are mine! And I didn't think anybody had my Shannon's but me. Sarah Reid Shannon sounds familiar. I'll have to look her up. But off the top of my head please let me stick in my 2 cents. Working back from Illoinos I have William Butler Shannon born in 1853 to William W Shannon and Nancy Ritchey of Kentucky. William W Shannon was 3rd born to Hugh Shannon who emigrated from Ireland as a child to Virginia. Not a lot to go on I know. You're right about the list of children's names. Samuel, Thomas, William...and so on. Linda
thanks so much for the info mike...i understand about the names....my samuel and margaret had a son isaac and i know that name was used alot....this is all alot of speculation at this point but at least a have somewhere to start.....i also remember my grandmother telling me that the marrs cemetery in auglaize county ohio was part of our family so will be checking that out also....thanks christina
Did John Jr. in N Ireland have a grandson GGrandson ? James? Or brothers that were in N Ireland? James in my direct ancestor and was born circa 1780 in County Antrim, N Ire. Hi, Christina, John and Margaret had seven children; John Jr, Samuel, Thomas Jefferson, Hugh, Thomas R., Lucy, and Isaac. A word of caution here, these names are used by everyone of these Shannons in every generation, so you have to be sure you have the right ones. The best way to do that is with dates of birth. Now, if this is your line, researchers in the family have it back to 1570 with John Shannon Sr. born about that time in Scotland. He had John Jr ca. 1600 in Scotland, and John Jr. Had son Robert ca 1630 in N. Ireland. Robert had four sons that migrated into New England. I think they were Robert, Andrew John, and Thomas. Thomas is ours. He settled in what is now Lancaster Co.,Pa., in the township of Sadesbury, where I found him on a sheriff's census for 1725. He died in 1735, leaving the farm to eldest son John. The next son was ours. His name was Samuel. John and Samuel married sisters. John m. Sarah Reid, Samuel m. Jean. When Samuel came of age, he took his part of the inheiritance and moved down into Virginia, ultimately settling in What is now Giles Co., at a place he named "Poplar Hill". It is still there, and descendants still live in the old homesteads. Originally the county was Fin castle, then it divided and they were in Montgomery, then Giles Co. Samuel and Jean had nine children; Captain Thomas Shannon, who married Agnes Crow and stayed at Poplar Hill when the rest went into Tenn, and Kentucky. It is his descendants that are still there. Anna m. James Marrs, Jane m. Alexander Marrs, John m. Margaret Marrs, David m. Jane McKnight, Esther m. James R. Ralston, Capt. James m. Mary Reid, then Mary McClung, Samuel m. Catherine Motheral, George m. Mary McKnight, and finally my ancestor, Joseph m. Mary Billingsley. My line is as follows; John>John Jr>Robert>Thomas>Samuel>Joseph>Granville m. Unity Williams>Col. Alexander m. Clara Viola Scott>James Alfred m. Dana Sproule>James Jr m. Gloria Gusman>Mike. There are several persons working this line. I'll send more later. Mike Shannon
