HI Great Grandma Moe, All the graffiti you saw was from passing around the email between several people who did not highlight and delete as needed. This was not my message but I cleaned it up so you can now read it and see if it pertains to you. Hi Dorothy, now that I see your last name, I know that we have communicated, or at least I've heard of you. Since you are in Erie, you probably know Terry Shannon. Also think you know Dee Duperis. She is the one who talked with Shannon's in Scotland. I live in N. GA, and was born in New Bethlehem, PA. My Shannon connection is: John Shannon; John and Jane Dunlop Shannon; Daniel and Jane Shannon Kennelley; Alexander and Roxanna Conley Kennelley: Daniel and Priscilla Love Kinley; Alexander and Sarah Kinley McMaster. I show that James Kennelley m. Sarah Hovenacker, but have no descendant's information down that line, or any of the others except mine (Alexander). Looks like we're 4th cousins. Hi Kay, Where do you live and what are the surnames starting with John, the Rev. War soldier? Are you related to his son John or his daughter Jane? I didn't quite understand. Hi Beverly, that could very well be, as there are McCune.McQuown that were married into this family. Can you check the message I just sent out to Shannon @ rootsweb.com. & addressed to Tamara? I'll be leaving for Fl. this coming week, so let me know soon if you think these Shannons are the same as yours. Good luck in your search. Dorothy
Hi Tamara, Here's the names of the children of my John Shannon [who had served in the Am. Rev. War] & his wife, Jane Dunlap. #1. Agnes Nancy Shannon b.Jan. 6, 1782; m. William McQuown #2. Elizabeth " b.Mar. 5, 1784 #3. Jane Rebecca " b.Feb. 13, 1786, m. Daniel Kennelly #4. John " b. Nov 13, 1787, m Jane McQuown #5. Alexander " b. Oct. 29, 1789, m. Elizabeth Smith #6. Hannah H. " b. Sept. 5, 1791, m. John McCormick #7. Isabelle " b. Jan 24, 1791 #8. Samuel " b. June 25, 1797, m. Mary Galbraith #9. Susanna " b.May 6, 1799 #10. James " b. Feb 22, 1801, m. Catherine Knoll One of these children married a Borland. I need to get my file out & go over it. After the family left Mercersburg, PA., they went to Spring Mills, Gregg Twp. some went to Haines & Rush Twp's in Centre Co. Pa where they lived for some time, except for Agnes who was m to Wm McQuown & they stayed in Mercersburg, as far as I know. Later, after the son John was in the War of 1812, he settled in Rockland Twp. Venango Co. PA and bought a farm, Alexander followed his brother & did the same. They were early settlers. As their parents were getting older, John & Alex had them come & live with them. They are all buried in the Rockland Cemetery. You can write to the Franklin Historical/Genealogical Library, in Venango Co. PA., and get more info there if you care too. I have other info, but I worked today & time for me to turn in. I'll be leaving for Florida this coming week, but will be back the end of Dec. I hope this is helpful for you, or others that may read this. My email address is; Irishlovey@aol.com Wishing you much luck with your research. Dorothy (Shannon) Cote PS. Perhaps you can share what you have on the Shannon Family with me?

I am looking for Clarence W. Shannon. I know he lived in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania and was born probably around 1850 or before (my g-grandmother, Josephine Hughes SHANNON was born in 1870). Clarence married a German woman by the name of Sophia HACHMEISTER (spelling ?). The reason your Shannons caught my eye is because Josephine married William Fleming CARGO whose mother (Barbara KERR) came from Coleraine. I don't know how big Coleraine was in those days, but I'm wondering if these families knew each other (the Shannnons, Cargos, and Kerrs) before coming to America. I don't even know if my Shannons came from Coleraine, but it's a thought! Ellen
Hi again Dorothy, I've seen your email address frequently and wonder if we might have communicated previously. Yes, this is my line. I have pictures of John's and Jane's tombstone, also a memorial listing of John and his father John's memorial listing in the Rev. War. In my lineage I have 3 generations, John, John, Jane, then jump to another surname. A second cousin, also working on genealogy, has visited Scotland, and/or talked with Shannon's in the Kintyre area. They said that trying to find the connection would be impossible. There are too many Shannon's in the area, and it was too long ago. Did you, by chance, find a connection? Hi Kay, Saw your posting on the Shannon family. My John Shannon was b. 1754/5 in MD., probably in Washington Co. He m. Jane Dunlap & they had 10 children & raised them in Mercersburg, PA. He served in the Am. Rev. War. He & Jane along with their children & their families all moved to Penns Valley in Centre Co., except for their oldest daughter Agnes Nancy (Shannon) McCune/McQueon. If you think this family is related to your Shannons', let me know so we can share. Dorothy
Dear Shannon seekers This is the first group of Shannons I've sorted out, all in Dumfriesshire. WILLIAM SHANNON and SUSAN DALRYMPLE WILLIAM SHANNON (described as a road contractor/labourer) and SUSAN DALRYMPLE are given as parents of the following: JOHN SHANNON, born 1784, Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire. Scotland’s People website lists at least 7 children of a John Shannon, from Dornock, Dumfriesshire, which is near Cummertrees, but these may be children of a different John Shannon, or of more than one other John Shannon. These children were: Andrew, b. 1798; Robert, b. 1799; Rosanna, b. 1801, mother Mary Kerr, (these three are unlikely to be this John’s child unless he was very precocious!); John, b. 1803; James, b. 1806; George Kerry, b. 1808; Matthew, b. 1810. DAVID SHANNON, born 1789, Cummertress, Dumfriesshire. A David Shannon married Ann Richardson in Annan, Dumfriesshire in 1823, but another David Shannon, son of a John Shannon and Margaret Holiday, was born in Annan in 1803, so it may be this David Shannon who married Ann Richardson. HUGH SHANNON, forester, born 1790, Dalton, Dumfriesshire, died 1877 at Kilmuir, Ross, north of Scotland, married to Catherine Paterson. A son, Hugh, reported his father’s death. JAMES SHANNON, limeburner/labourer, born 1794, Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire, died 1876, at Annan, Dumfriesshire, married to HANNAH (or Hannow) WATERS (or Walters), born Newton Stewart, Wigtonshire, Scotland. James and Hannah Shannon were parents of JAMES, tilemaker, born 1827, THOMAS, born @ 1830 (see below for Thomas’s family), and WILLIAM (birth year not known, but reported his father’s death in 1876, then living at Moffat, Dumfriesshire). ROBERT SHANNON, limeburner, born 1806, Cummertrees, Dumfriesshire, died 1895, at Kelhead, Dumfriesshire, married to MARGARET JOHNSTONE, daughter of Robert Johnstone, coachman, and Betsey Mossgrove, born 1807, Cummertrees, died 1895, three days after her husband died, at Kelhead, Dumfriesshire. ROBERT and MARGARET SHANNON were parents of ROBERT, born 1833, possibly married Mary Irving, a son George born 1862; SUSAN, born @ 1836, possibly mother of another George, born 1858; JOHN, limestone quarryman, born 1839 at Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire, died unmarried, 1910, at Cummertrees; ELIZABETH, born @ 1842; JAMES, born @ 1847; GEORGE, born @ 1851. At least two other children were born to a Robert Shannon at Cummertrees, but the mother in these cases is listed as Jane Coulthard. This is probably a different Robert Shannon, but who knows! The children of Robert and Jane were William, born 1831, and Robert, born 1839. Another William Shannon, born @ 1833 at Ruthwell (as was John, limestone quarryman, above) was also a child of a Robert Shannon, but his mother was Roseanne Shannon (no maiden name given). This William Shannon was a joiner journeyman, married to Mary Little, with a son William who lived at Annan and reported his father’s death, at Ruthwell, in 1900. The entry of William Snr’s death in the Register states that his father, Robert, was a quarry labourer – another rather close match to the Robert Shannon who was the son of William Shannon and Susan Dalrymple! THOMAS SMITH SHANNON (son of James, grandson of William and Susan), married ELIZA DICKSON, born @ 1833, in Edinburgh, daughter of Ninian Dickson and Ann Tod. Ninian Dickson was a joiner from Berwickshire, south-east Scotland. Thomas and Eliza married in 1856, when Thomas was a gardener, and Eliza a millworker, from Penicuik, Midlothian. By the time of the 1881 census they were living at Stow, Selkirk, and had eight children: Ann, b.@ 1858; Ninian, b @ 1861; Maria b @ 183; Elizabeth, b @ 1866; Alexandra, b @ 1868; Thomas, b @ 1871; Christina, b @ 1874, and William, b @ 1877. I expect you are all on to it, but if anyone doesn't know, for Scottish ancestors, the Scotlands People website is invaluable <www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk> but it does charge. The 1851 census for Dumfriesshire, Kircudbrightshire and Wigtonshire (not Galloway as I said in my last message) is all on the Dumfries & Galloway website, and it's free and searchable, at < http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/services/depts/comres/library/gresearch.asp?mode=research> Hilary

I will send all the information I have on Shannons in the old Scottish counties of Dumfries, Kirkcudbright and Galloway, but it will take me a while. The 1851 census has 145 Shannons in those counties alone! So be patient, I will be working at it, Hilary Kinnell Shropshire England
