    3. God Bless You, I visited your eastern TN. sight. I have some Scarborough in my mother's clan, a Mary, born in 1862, I will have to search more of your sight, for other connections. I am looking for Albert James Shannon, b:~March 1896, I have no Idea who his parents were, he was my Grandfather, never even seen a picture of him. He left my Grandma when my dad was only 3. Family lore had it that he was a foster child, or adopted, he lived in Cape Girardeau, Mo. as a child. I found him in the 1910 census, as a roomer with a family. No list of parents. In the census under parents in 1910 He listed them born in the US. in the 1920 census they were born in KY. I will track more on him, eventually. If anyone has any clues as to how to find info, I would be very appriciative. I am at a dead end on my father's family, as Grandma's parents came from Germany, and the info on Albert is so slim. So all the info you have in the digest is helpful to my search, and I can't thanky! ou enough for listing your personal websight, Melinda. 1. Re: [SHANNON-L] Shannons in Scotland & Ireland 1796 - 1907
    2. Excellent research. I am trying to look for a fit with my line. Please visit my website, "The Shannon Family of East TN" (the link should appear at the bottom of this email) and see if you can find anything. There was a "Samuel" Shannon located in or near Londonderry around 1690 who participated in the Siege. Because of the Scots-Irish naming patterns, I wonder if your Sam is descended from him? It does seem odd to me that your family went from Ireland to Scotland rather than the reverse. From your other clues associating them with England, my guess is your line is Scots-Irish Shannon, rather than the "Green Irish" Shannon descended from "Shannahan." Have you been to the Ulster American Folkpark in Omagh, N. Ireland? There is a wonderful research facility there. 1. [SHANNON-L] Shannons in Scotland & Ireland 1796 - 1907
    2. Hello Shannon hunters. Sometime ago I sent some information to this list about a family of Shannons in Dumfriesshire, south-west Scotland. I have found a lot of Shannons in this area on the 1851 census, but have not been able to connect any of them with my own family tree, except the one family, described at length below. My grandmother's grandmother, Isabella Shannon, was born 1841, in Midlothian, Scotland. Her parents were Henry Shannon (born @1821) and Eliza Shepherd or Sheppard (born @1820). Henry and Eliza married some months AFTER Isabella's birth, at Stow, Midlothian, in 1842. At that time, Henry was a groom at Thurston, near Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. Henry & Eliza had at least 10 more children over the next 17 years. They were Henry Shannon, born Dalkeith, Midlothian, 1843, died Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire 1861. Mary Ann Matilda Shannon, born 1846, Monzievaird, Pethshire. Her father Henry is described as 'coachman at Ochtertyre' on the baptismal record. Elizabeth Dixon Shannon, born 1847 at Glencorse, Midlothian Alison/Alice Shannon, born 1849, also at Glencorse, Midlothian Samuel Shannon, born 1851, at Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire. He lived to adulthood, and with his brother John (below), erected at gravestone to members of his family in the churchyard at Kirkpatrick Fleming. Tamer Shannon, born 1853, at Kirkpatrick Fleming, died 1856, aged 2 years John Shannon, born 1855, at Kirkpatrick Fleming, married Mary Corrie or Currie in 1876, when he was working as a coachman. Mary died aged 52 in 1904 at KF. John subsequently worked as a policeman at Maryport, Cumberland, England, and died in 1907, aged 52. Louisa Shannon, born 1857 at Kirkpatrick Fleming, married John Graham, ploughman, in 1877, died 1879 at Carlisle, England. Mathilda Shannon, born 1859 at Kirkpatrick Fleming, married Thomas Nixon, coachman and later cab driver, of Carlisle. They had at least two children, Joseph Nixon, born 1880, and Henry Nixon, born 1882. Going back to the father of this family, Henry Shannon, born @1821. The birthplaces of his first five children show that he was in the area south of Edinburgh most of the time, except when Mary was born, in 1846, in Perthshire. He then appears on the 1851 census, in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfriesshire, as a groom at Toppinhead Lodge, one of the lodges of Mossknowe House, the residence of the biggest landowner of the parish, retired Lt. Colonel, William Graham. Evidence from census records and the marriage records of his children show that Henry was groom then coachman for the Graham family for 40 years, living first at Toppinhead Lodge, then Mossknowe Lodge, and finally, on the 1891 census, the aged Henry & Eliza are living in Mossknowe House itself, although the Graham family are not there at the time of the census. Col Graham had died in 1882. His eldest son, also William Graham, was described on the 1881 census as an 'imbecile', but would still have inherited the estate. It may be that Henry & Eliza were entrusted with the care of the house, while the owner was cared for elsewhere. However, soon after the 1891 census, Henry & Eliza moved to Edinburgh, perhaps to be near one of their children. Eliza died there in November 1894, and the record of her death states that she had suffered 'apoplexy (stroke) with paralysis' for 18 months, a condition for which Henry, well into his 70s himself, would have need help in caring for her. Henry died in Edinburgh in February 1898. The record of his death states that his parents were Samuel Shannon & Mary Reid. It also states that Samuel Shannon was a 'turnkey' - prison warder. The discovery that Henry Shannon's father was a turnkey was rather a disappointment, as my grandmother's family myths included the tale that Henry's father had been the younger son of an Irish earl, who was disinherited for marrying beneath him! However, the family myth went on to say that, being disinherited, Henry's father became a soldier at Dublin Castle, and then moved to Dumfriesshire when Henry was a baby. The evidence that Henry was born in Ireland comes from the census records for 1881 and 1891. On the 1881 census, his birthplace is given as Ireland, and on the 1891 census, it specifies Dublin. Although I have not yet been able to find any evidence that Henry was in Dumfriesshire before the 1851 census, when he was already 29, I thought it was possible that, IF his father had been a soldier before being a turnkey (and prison staff were often former soldiers, then as now), there might be an army connection with Lt. Col. William Graham, for whose family Henry worked for 40 years. I found out that William Graham was Lt. Col. in the 12th Royal Lancers (formerly Light Dragoons), a cavalry regiment, that was serving in Ireland around the time of Henry's birth, @ 1821. The Regimental Museum in Derby has computerised records of all enlisted men (not officers) from 1809, and they found only one Samuel Shannon, who was the right age to have been Henry's father. This Samuel Shannon was born in the parish of Drummully, Fermanagh, Ireland, @ 1796. He enlisted in the 12th Lancers in 1818, and was formerly a weaver. The army record even describes his appearance - 5' 8" with fresh complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair. He was also married to a Mary. It does seem likely that this Samuel Shannon was Henry's father - he served in the same regiment as the Lt. Colonel who employed Henry; it was a cavalry regiment, giving Henry an excellent training for working with horses; the regiment was in Ireland when Henry was born, and Samuel's wife was called Mary. He also had black hair - a small point, but my grandmother described her grandmother, Isabella Shannon, Henry's daughter, as having "the black curly hair of her Irish forebears". However, the army record lists the births of four of Samuel and Mary's children, none of whom are Henry! The historian at the museum told me that the army was very meticulous over recording the marriages of their enlisted men, and the births of their children, because it affected the rations they were given. Not only is there no record of Henry's birth to Samuel and Mary, there is no record of Samuel and Mary's marriage either. Apparently this could mean that they married before he enlisted, or that they married without army permission - if so, they would have been refused the extra rations, and life would have been very tough for them. Whether or not this Samuel and Mary Shannon were Henry's parents, the army record gives a fair bit of information about them. They had a daughter, Mary Anne, born 4th May 1824 at Cork, Ireland; a son John, born 4th April 1829 in London, England; another son, also John (this may mean the first John had died) born 25th April 1831 in Dublin, and a daughter Louisa, baptised 17th May 1840 at Preston (now part of Brighton), Sussex, England. Samuel was promoted to corporal in June 1825; he was court martialled twice (the record doesn't say what for); received good conduct pay of 3 pence a day from April 1840, and was discharged as unfit for service in Dublin in July 1842, with a pension of one shilling and six pence a day. Being discharged as unfit for service in 1842, when he was only about 46, it is quite possible that he then got work as a turnkey, and was indeed the Samuel Shannon that appears on the record of Henry's death, although the mystery remains of why Henry's birth - 3 or 4 years after Samuel enlisted - was not recorded by the army. A database of Irish land holdings from the middle of the 19th century doesn't have any Shannons holding land in Drummully, Fermanagh, but the parish of Drummully crosses county boundaries into Monaghan, and in the neighbouring parish of Currin, Monaghan, there is a Samuel Shannon listed as holding land at Aghnaskew Glebe. There is a John Reid (Henry Shannon's mother was a Mary Reid) who held land in Drummully, Fermanagh, but these names are too common to be anything more than suggestive. If anyone else on this list (who has had the patience to read all of this!) has Shannon connections in Fermanagh or Monaghan, I would be delighted to hear from them. 3. This is not a reply to the Shannon message we received yesterday but since this is the first one I have received from this list since signing up,I wanted to post my Shannon family.Maybe we can get something going here and find some of these illusive Shannons. I have only rescently learned that my ggrandmother remarried after her husband disappeared. Her name was Susannah Smith Garrison. She first married Robert Garrison in Warren Co.,Ohio in 1847.They moved west to Peoria,Ill.where my grandad Reed Garrison was born in 1852.For some unknown reason they came back East as far as Blackford Co.,Indiana where Robert disappeared from their log cabin along the Salamonie River on the Godfrey Reserve. This is where the Miami Indians met and there is still a burial grounds there. It has always been told that Robert went to feed the chickens and all they found was the bucket. It was never known if the Indians got him or he just left.I have found a marriage for Susanna Garretson and G W Shannon in Jay Co.,Indiana Oct.11,1858.The census of Jay Co,Penn Twsp.1860 has Gideon Shannon, age 31,born Ohio.Reid Garretson age 8,Susannah age 28,first child age 1.In the census of Blackford Co.1870 there is;Gideon Shannon age 47,Reid Garrison age 18,Susan age 38,Simon B age 11,Lucinda age 9,Charles L age 7,Arron age 6.Gideon remarried Angelline E.Allen in Blackford Co.,Dec.11,1875 so I presume my ggrandmother Susannah died within those five years. I am looking for the children of Susannah Garrison and Gideon W Shannon or their descendants. Please post your Shannon family in hopes that someone might find a link and get something started here.I know there were more Shannons in Blackford Co.,Indiana and still are some there. Thanks for listening, Jeany Garrison Roark in Indiana >

    3. Hi. This is mostly for Christina, whose e-mail address I seem to have lost. She is looking for the parents of Samuel Shannon who married Margaret Hamilton in Kentucky. I have found some Shannon death records from the Shaker Colony at South Union, Kentucky which included the death of a John Shannon who was born March 15, 1756- not at the colony but who died there MAY 1, 1914 who seems like a good possibility for the John she is looking for. South Union, Kentucky is in Logan County where the John in question is known to have lived. So, hopefully Christina and whoever else might be interested in this will contact me. The Shannons listed as dieing at that colony are: John Shannon born March 15, 1756- died May 1, 1814 at age 48 Newel Shannon (male) born December 19, 1807 - died April 25, 1832 at age 25 Samuel Shannon born August 29, 1781 - died October 29, 1859 at age 68 Betsey Shannon born April 11, 1796 - died August 25, 1814 at age 18 Lavina Shannon born October 3, 1783 - died February 11, 1820 at age 37 Lucy Shannon born 1804 -died January 24, 1881 at age 77 Olive Shannon born 1802 - died June 26, 1881 at age 79 Sarah Shannon born 1831 - died December 9, 1887 at age 56 Welthy
