Hi Dorris, Family stories on my Shannon line put my John Shannon as a brother to the George Shannon who went on the Lewis and Clark, so I did extensive research to prove it. My John does not belong to that family, but there may be a cousin connection. That George Shannon of the Lewis and Clark was a son of George Shannon and Jane Milligan . The family is sketched out in THE HISTORY OF BELMONT AND JEFFERSON CO. OH PP. 187 to 189. Most of the sons of George and Jane Milligan Shannon became quite prominent and you will find other things written about most of them You must live near Lake Tahoe. ----- Original Message ----- From: JMarieEdm@aol.com To: jimmyk@bigfoot.com Sent: Sunday, July 18, 2004 2:04 AM Subject: Shannon Genealogy Dear Jimmy, I am doing research on my parents families and on my mother's line (Eva Knight), I was researching a Shockley connection. In researching the Shockley line I discovered a Shockley (William L. Shockley b. 7-31-1891/d.12-4-1947) married a Shannon (Eva Bell Shannon b. 12-29-1895/d. 5-13-1987) who are buried in Clinton, Laurens County, SC. This info on the above Shockley and Shannon was from a Lesley Hughes. In my research, I have discovered that there was a Shockley reunion in Washington. I also learned through researching my mother's line (Eva Knight, b. 12-23-1914 Gordon, AL/d.8-24-1998, Albany, GA) that there was a Knight reunion in 2001 in Seattle, WA. This info was from a Lisa Knight, wife of Glenn, son of Howard P. Knight, son of Glenn I.W. Knight, son of William Henry Harrison Knight. Lisa Knight mentioned that this was a fun line to trace as there are lines of female descendants with only 1 male at the end of each generation. Lisa stated her son Paul was the only Knight male to attend the 2001 Knight reunion except for her husband and her father-in-law. My mother Eva Knight Edmunds was the oldest of 6 (5 girls and 1 boy); mother's brother Sam Knight had only 1 son (Sam Jr.) and Sam Jr. had only one son who was married a few years ago and my Uncle Sam and my Cousin Sam were teasing the remaining male Knight that it was up to keep to continue this line of the Knight ! Family. Lisa also mentioned a book - this book info was from a Robbie Knight which he stated was the Knight Family Reunion Book from 2001. Apparently this book contained info about William Knight b. Abt 1765, m. Elishiba b. 1771 and died 7 Feb 1856. Robbie Knight stated he would like to share info. I know all of this can be very confusing. I also have a connection to the Anderson family through my mother (Eva Knight). I have learned of this Anderson genealogy recently and found that Anita Knight Drennon has a Knight/Anderson connection also. Her Anderson line goes as noted: Sarah Elizabeth (Sally) Anderson - her GGGGrandmother was on her father's father's side with 10 children in this family. This lineage goes: Sally, daughter of John Jr Anderson b. Abt 1759 in Duplin Co., NC; John Sr was b. Bet 1730-1740 in VA; James was b. Abt 1691 in VA; Robert Jr was b. Abt 1663 in New Kent Co., VA; Robert Sr was b. Abt 1640 in New Kent Co, VA; Richard Jr was b. in England/died in VA; Richard Sr was b. in London Jan 1584. Anita Knight Drennon's Knight connection is through Sally Anderson's sister Mary "Polly" Anderson who married Aaron Daniel (Daniel is on Anita's grandmother Rachael Elizabeth "Betty" Knight's side. Another sister of Sally's, Rebecca Anderson married Abner ! W. Sweat Abt 1814 in Tattnall Co, he was born 1776 in Cheraw District SC and died in Columbia Co. FL. In my research on my mother Eva Knight Edmunds family I have discovered these above stated names continuing - Rebecca, Eva, Anita, Abner, etc. Since there has been extensive research on the Shannon family I was wondering if you or some other Shannon researcher had discovered any connections stated above. PS, lastly but not least. My father Elam Dempsey Edmunds b. 24 Sep 1908 in Amity, Lincoln Co., GA; died 30 Jul 1970 in Colquitt, GA and his parents/my grandparents were Frederick Levi Edmunds and Sarah Elizabeth Edmonds (no connection so far) had family in Lincolnton, GA, McCormick, SC, Edgefield, SC. My GGGGGGgrandfather was Alexander Edmunds who left KY and came to SC after the REV. His son Samuel Calhoun Edmunds had Mapleton Plantation located in New Bordeaux SC. Through my Edmunds line, i.e. my father Elam Dempsey (Demp) Edmunds, I have a Newby line. My GGGGgrandfather was Frederick Harris Edmunds b. 1827 who married Mary Jennings and their son, James Winfield Edmunds married Louise Cornelia Newby. James Winfield's brother John Francis Edmunds was married to Sarah Newby, sister to Louise Cornelia Newby. John Francis Edmunds' 2nd wife was Augusta Ann Harris. The Edmunds married into the Furqueron family. In discovering this connection I connected up with John Fur! queron who lives in Washington and we have shared info as he goes back home to SC to visit and I have been going to SC annually since 2001 to visit family (attend reunion through my grandmother - Sarah Elizabeth (Lizzie) Edmonds whose parents were Reuben Buckner Edmonds, II and Mary Jane Poss. As you can see, the various lineages are becoming even more confusing but I am enjoying the research and filling in the blanks and completing the puzzle. My oldest brother, Samuel Eugene (Gene) Edmunds and myself, Janice Marie (Janice) Edmunds are leaving tomorrow, after lunch - 7/18/04 to go to Lincolnton, GA, Washington, GA, Edgefield, SC, McCormick, SC, etc. to spend the week on genealogy research of our various and sundry families. Thank you for your patience. Hopefully, we can find a common bond through some of the above lines. We are currently researching the following families - direct lines - Edmunds and Edmonds families, Kennedy, Poss, Harris, Newby, Callaham, Jennings, Knight, Stephens, Snead, Wilkerson, Shockley, Anderson and more than likely Winfield, Whitfield, Owen along with even more we don't know about but could possibly be connected to also. Thanks again. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Janice Marie (Janice) Edmunds - Albany, GA.
Hi, Galway? Roscommon? Sligo? (posted to all 3 county lists, sorry for any duplication). Too many conflicts and not enough evidence. Any Help on the following dilemma will greatly appreciated? I was always told by my late mother (also overheard in conversations) that my gg grandfather John SHANNON originated from Roscommon, Ireland, but, that is all she knew. I do not know if she was referring to the town or county of Roscommon. (at that time I, (and probably she) was ignorant of the fact that there are both). To add another possibility to the above, my aunt (mum's younger sister) says that they lived on neighbouring border farms, one farm in SLIGO the other in Roscommon, (she does not know who was in which county). To add even further complication, the 1861 census for Walsall states only "Ireland" for John & Bridget SHANNON, the 1871 census states that both were from "Galway, Ireland" and the 1881 census for Bridget also states "Galway, Ireland". As such, one should assume that Bridget at least, was from Galway. Maybe the story of neighbouring border farms should be Galway & Roscommon! The approx. DoB's extrapolated from census forms are: John SHANNON b.1813 Bridget SHANNON (nee ?) b.1811 I do not know exactly when they came to England, it is believed to be around the time of the Great Potato famine, late 1840's to early 1850's. I have found the first reference to them on the 1861 census in Walsall, Staffs',UK. with their eldest son shown born in 1854 in Walsall. It is possible that they may have arrived in England, say Liverpool, prior to the 1851 census, only moving to Walsall before 1854. As I haven't found a marriage record in England, I am making an assumption that they married in Ireland before leaving for England. I have searched (LDS-IGI, BVRI & FreeBMD mainly) for any birth or marriage of John and/or Bridget from Roscommon, Galway and Sligo, Ireland. all without success. I believe that the majority of records, e.g. Census etc, for that era were destroyed in a fire in Dublin. Is this so? Are there any other parish/church records available? if so were? can they be accessed? ANY other ideas or suggestions on how to trace/find reference to them in Ireland would be greatly appreciated. Any help or information you may be able to provide will always be greatly appreciated. regards Brian (in JoBurg) -- Brian Edge. P.O. Box 13503, NORTHMEAD, Gauteng, 1511. Connie, Which province did your Shannon's settle into? Mine were in Grenville, Argentiul County, Quebec, as were many other Irish expatriates. If you can hook into a Canadian researcher they can go to the library or governmental records repository and search by names from residency and the year. Our Lowe's and Shannon's left Ireland and/or Scotland in 1825 aboard the "Phemous," though I have little else. Another place to check records for where they may have entered the U.S. might be the Port Huron Immigration Center at Michigan. The churches are also a good source of information. Our ancestors were Anglican and Catholic, though I don't know if it was a combined sect. I went to the church in Grenville and then through the cemeteries and found lots of folks I'd thought had been lost to the ages. It may be a proverbial "needle in a haystack" but you may find more than you hoped for. Best wishes for success in your search! This is my family, and I will write to Virginia Shannon directly. But just in case anyone else is interested: David C. Shannon b Williamson Co. TN, 24 Aug 1820, d. possibly in Williamson Co TX, after 1900. David married 1) in Taney Co. MO (a burned co.) prob. 1838, Mildred "Milly" Bartlett, b. Tennessee, c 1822, and d. Travis Co. TX c 1878. David married Mrs. Payne after Milly's death, probably in Travis Co. The three Payne children are hers, and the granddaughter is Alice Gage, daughter of David and Milly's daughter Mary C., who married Thomas Gage, in Fayette Co. TX 22 May 1866. It appears that Mary died in childbirth. David and Milly had several children, one of them being Leonidas (who might have been called 'Lon'). I don't have an exact date of birth for this Leonidas, but my best estimate before this was 1854. He would have been born in Live Oak County, Texas. I am the descendant of another of David and Milly Shannon's sons, John Thomas Shannon. John T. Shannon's son, Kirtiss Leonidas, was my great-grandfather. David C Shannon also had a brother named Leonidas - so it was a very popular name in this family. I would be very happy to hear from anyone else researching this family. I have a good bit of information to share. Marcy marcyptx@sbcglobal.net http://www.geocities.com/marcyptx

All I can find on him is that he went by Lou or Lon and sometimes just L.A. Shannon. He married a Kizzie A. Payne in Travis Co,TX in 1880. On the marriage license it states that a D.C. Shannon swears that the girls mother gives her consent for the girl to marry. I have found a David C.Shannon who married a Ellen Payne in Travis Co. on 9 Nov 1876. What I am trying to find out is how Lou,Lon,or L.A.Shannon may be kin to him. Kizzie's, mothers name was Mattie Ellen. I am hoping that Lou (are what ever) may be one of David's brother's are maybe a nephew. I did find David and Mrs M Shannon on the 1880 census in Travis Co, they had 3 Payne children living with them at the time and 1 granddaughter. If you can shed any light on this man I would be forever greatful. Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Virginia Shannon ctn80129@centurytel.net
Whenever my ancestors were allowed to write their name themselves, on a document, they always spelled it Shannan. This is a characteristic I have been able to trace back to 1800, at least. It is no different with my modern relatives, 200 years later. I would like to know the history of anyone's ancestors who steadfastly signed their name this way, in the hope that this fastidiousness, can be used as a handle. It might then be possible to infer a link, either to my own Dumfries & Galloway Shannans, or to a particular place, or attitude in the 1700s. Keith Scott mariner98@supanet.com
