    1. Re:Shannon's from Ireland to Canada...
    2. Ed et. al., My Shannon's came from Ireland to Grenville Quebec, Canada around 1825. Family lore says they were from County Cork, but I'm thinking more like Antrim or Limerick. Is there a place I can research documents like passenger manifests and such? Does anyone else have any advice? I have found almost all of them but not how they got there. If I can locate my Shannon's and Lowe ancestors who possibly sailed over on a ship called "Phemous," I promise to wear a Montreal Expos cap to every Angels game until the end of the season and sing "Oh Canada" atop my garage for the entire neighborhood! 3. Hi, Do you know anything else about this John Shannon such as wife's name, any children or even what county he lived in? I have some info on a John Shannon (ca 1760-1820), Pendleton District, South Carolina- father of Thomas; Owen; Moses; Aaron- brother of Owen Shannon the early Texas settler. In the 1790 census, Pendleton District (there is currently no Pendleton county) lists a John Shannon household with 3 males above age 16; 4 males under age 16, 2 females and 7 slaves. I also have info that says Col. Aaron Shannon married Elizabeth Kilpatrick born ca. 1770, daughter of William Kilpatrick and Catherine Brandon, of Conross Creek, Pendleton district S.C. Migrated before 1830 to Pickens county, Alabama and later removed to Texas. A son Thomas Brandon Shannon, born 1827, probably Alabama was living at Independence, Burelson County, Texas. There were several Shannons listed in the 1790 census for S.C. including more than one John so any more information could help define which John was yours. Welthy

I know so little about my John Shannon, but here are the facts: Possible middle name of "Anderson". He was born in PA in 1789 according to Census. He m. in 1820 in Nicholas Co KY, Keziah Rogers. About 1830 they migrated to Licking Co OH where he died in 1852. Family stories say he was a preacher in the Campbellite Movement (New Light), and there is some evidence that he did indeed serve as a preacher in Kentucky. I sure can't find anymore about him. Keziah Rogers is stated as an orphan on their Marriage Permission, so now hint of her parents. Plenty of Rogers and Shannon names in that era in Nicholas Co - but no wills or probates to give proof. It is always a surprise to me when someone is able to sort out their Shannon line! Marlene

    1. Re: [SHANNON-L] Re: George Shannon's
    2. Doris: I have the history and lineage of the Shannon's of East Tennessee. They settled in Lancaster County, PA. From there, William Shannon came down from the Shenandoah Valley (Greenbriar County) in Virginia to Anderson Co. near Knoxville about 1798. Your William Howard Shannon does not ring a bell with me; however it is a common name in the Shannon line. (Our Shannons usually followed the conventional Scots-Irish naming patterns.) Do you have a name of a county or city in Tennessee? If he settled near Nashville (Davidson County) then it is very likely he is descended from Samuel, the son of Thomas, one of the legendary "four brothers Shannon" who came over from Northern Ireland in the early 1700's. Visit my website for more information and see if you can connect somewhere. There are several links to other Shannon sites as well. http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-shannonfamily Good Luck! 3. Here is a brief outline of the family of George Shannon and Jane Milligan: 1759-60 a family named Shannon, consisting of father, mother and year-old son, left Ireland for America. The mother died on the voyage over and the father brought the baby to Wilmington, Delaware, left him with an Episcopal Minister and returned to Ireland to close out his business; he died there soon afterward. ( I have read that the ship he was on was lost at sea.) The child was brought up by and educated by the minister and later married an Irishwoman, Miss Jane Milligan. ( Elsewhere it is stated there was a first marriage prior to Jane Milligan). George Shannon and his wife lived for a few years in PA, then went to Belmont Co OH, where they raised a family. In January 1803, George was frozen to death in a snowstorm and his wife, Jane, died in 1823. ( I have read elsewhere that she m. for a 2nd time). During the Revolution, George served in Capt. 2. hi Dorris, if you find that George Shannon with the Lewis & Clark expedition is indeed one of your ancestors, a very well written book "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen E. Ambrose is available at many libraries & bookstores. It is reasonably priced & has a lot on this George. I too, was hoping to tie part of my Shannon line into this man, but was not able to...........<sigh> good luck, Joyce
