Doneva, You haven't happened to know anything about a Clarence Shannon would you? I know he was born in the first half of the 19th century and my mother always thought it was in South Carolina. He eventually ended up in Pittsburgh where my g-grandmother, Josephine Hughes Shannon was born in 1870. His wife was Sophia Hackmeister (or something similar). Clarence is an elusive fellow! Ellen
If I could invite a Shannon ancestor to Christmas dinner I would invite my great-grandfather, Richard Shannon who was born in County Down in 1850. I would have so many questions for him. I would ask him why he chose to migrate to Western Pennsylvania in the 1870's. Did any other family members come with him? How did he manage to make enough money to send for his wife, Esther (Irvin) Shannon and his baby daughter, Agnes, two years later? I want to know who his parents were and the names of his siblings. And of course, I'd like to hear stories about the difficulties of supporting a family of 10 children by working in the coke fields of W. Pennsylvania and later the steel mill in Pittsburgh. But mostly I'd like to tell him how grateful his descendants are that he had the courage to leave his home and loved ones behind to come to America. I'd want to tell him that I know life was probably nearly as difficult for him here as it was in Ireland, but that his descendants have prospered (comparatively speaking). And that's why, just this year, 102 years after his death we placed a marker on his unmarked grave in Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh. Barbara Shannon
I would invite to Christmas dinner Mary Shannon, who was born December 19, 1858 in Treenabontry, Kiltimagh, County Mayo Ireland. She was my grandfather's first wife. They lived in Bohola, County Mayo. They had 4 children. She died October 16, 1891. He married my grandmother 2 years later and had 7 more children. I would like to ask Mary Shannon, what my granfather was like in his younger years, and how he was able to survive the Great Famine of 1845, the year of his birth. Mary had a brother who's name was Joseph, he came to the States and lived for a while in Chicago. I was at one time in contact with his great grandaughter Shannon, who also lives in the Chicago area, but have lost contact with her. I would like to hear from her again if anyone know how I can contact her please let me know. Ann
I would love to be able to invite my Great-great grandmother Lavinia Shannon Lewellen. Perhaps she would tell me who here parents were. Was her father James Shannon who lived in Preble Co., Ohio when she was born in 1821? Was the middle name of her daughter Hattie Vance Lewellen her mother's maiden name? So many questions I now have but no answers, only speculations! I feel sure that the 50+ family members attending the dinner would also have questions. Maybe they could be answered in our "Christmas dreams". Sue
Hello and Happy Holidays to my Shannon Cousins! According to my research, most of the Shannon's in America are descended through the Protestant Presbyterians from Northern Ireland who came to America in the 1700's. If your Shannon ancestor settled in Pennsylvania prior to 1840, then moved down the Great Wagon Road into Virginia, the Carolinas and Tennessee, then you are probably Scots-Irish, not Irish. There is a big difference between the two cultures! With this in mind, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you all about some wonderful projects dedicated to the preservation of the Scots-Irish history and heritage. Did you know that 17 out of our 43 presidents and heroes like Davy Crockett, Stonewall Jackson, Jeb Stuart and Sam Houston were of Scots-Irish descent? Did you know that more than any other people, the Scots-Irish shaped our nation? They also brought us bluegrass music, whiskey and drag racing! Sadly, this culture has been virtually ignored by American History. Since I am working very hard to preserve the story before it is lost forever, I would like to share the following information with you - especially because the Shannon's were involved in just about every aspect of the Scots-Irish fight for freedom - here in America, in Ulster and in Scotland. The Ulster Scots Society of America is actively recruiting new members. Please check it out! Our 2005 Convention will be held in October at The Museum of Appalachia in Norris , TN. (Near Knoxville.) The website is at http://www.ulsterscotssociety.com/ Also, please check out James Webb's wonderful new book Born Fighting - How the Scots-Irish Shaped America . Mr. Webb is the former Secretary of the Navy, and he has authored a number of books that you may be familiar with. His website is at http://www.jameswebb.com/bornfighting.htm The Scots-Irish chronicles by Billy Kennedy are must-reads. Several volumes mention specific Shannon patriots. If you are interested in any of his volumes, please email me and I will be glad to give you more information on obtaining these titles. Also, please check out "On Eagle's Wing," the spectacular new musical about the Scots-Irish. I have been working as a consultant to the composer and management staff for over a year. We have just finished filmed the show for PBS and it will be airing in the United States in Soring 2005, to be followed by a 36 city tour. This show blows "Riverdance" out of the water! Check out the music and dancing at http://www.oneagleswing.co.uk/ I am also working with a producer at CNN here in Atlanta on a new documentary about the Scots-Irish ( we haven't decided on a name yet) and we begin the screenwriting process in January. Last but not least, and perhaps dearest to my heart, is that I am in the final stages of publishing my first novel (and yes - it is about the Shannons! ) Best Regards, Melinda Shannon Freels Officer-at-Large The Ulster-Scots Society of America "The Shannon Family of East Tennessee: A Story of the Scots-Irish" http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-shannonfamily
Doneve: You might be interested in reading Jimmy Carter's new novel, "The Hornet's Next" which goes into great detail about the Revolutionary War battles, i.e. King's Mountain, Cowpens, that were fought in South Carolina. I was at King's Mountain in October for the annual meeting of The Ulster Scots-Society of America, and sure enough, there is a Robert Shannon listed on the muster rolls as a patriot. Does anyone out there claim kinship to this Robert Shannon? According to "Heroes of the Scots-Irish in America" by my good friend Billy Kennedy, Robert Shannon was born in N. Ireland in 1753 and was married to a Catherine Davidson. They eventually settled in Kentucky. Just curious! What a great idea this is! I would want to invite my G-G-Grandpa, William Riley Shannon for Christmas dinner. Although I've read his journal, I'd like to hear more about his Civil War service, especially the story of how he twice had the horse shot out from under him, but never dropped the United States flag. I'd also love to hear him tell the story of his Grandfather Andrew's service with Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812 and his Great Grandfather William's service with the Pennsylvania Millitia during the American Revolution. I also want to know if he is at peace now that his grave is marked with a fine new Civil War Monument. And I wonder what he thought about his long overdue (97 years!) funeral that he finally received last summer and having his story televised all over the State of Tennessee. Merry Christmas! thanks Carolyn for this great idea. My post will have to wait till next week as our family celebrates our gathering the weekend before Christmas, leaving Christmas to be at home with little ones for Santa's visit. However, as large as we are now, is only 2 under 14 years. Gotta get that next generation to work getting us some more babies.......in my opinion, that is the fun of Christmas. Everyone, think about who you would invite & what you would ask. If you're like me, I would have a list & put just a dab on his plate so he could answer my questions & not eat. hahaha Joyce
Hi, For Christmas dinner I would invite my Great Grandfather John Anderson Shannon who was born in 1874 or 1875 in Cincinnati, Ohio. I would like to ask him about his parents William Shannon (some German church records list him as Wilhelm Schanon or Schanen) and Emilie (Amelia) Nieske Shannon. I would like to know something about his parents and other Shannon family. I know that Emilie's parents were from Germany, but I don't know anything at all about John's parents although I think his father's name may have been John A. Shannon who was born in Kentucky and then was a carriage maker in Ohio. Happy Holidays to everyone! Sincerely, Susan E. Davis

Dear List, If I could have that magical wish come true to invite a Shannon ancestor, it would be my grandmother Nora (Liza Avery Lenora) Shannon. She was born 1881 in Sharp County, Arkansas, and died at the age of 103 in Tarrant County, Texas. She and her husband William Alexander Doss and their first five children came to Kaufman County, Texas in 1913. Will Doss and all their children would, of course, be invited for dinner, too. As my parents divorced when I was only three years old and I never saw or heard from my father or his family again, I missed a lot of Christmas dinners (not to mention love and togetherness) with this branch of my family tree. I've since "found" my Shannon-Doss family but, sadly, it was after Nora and my father were already gone. It would be so nice to once again have the entire family around a table for Christmas dinner: Will and Nora Shannon Doss, their children Beatrice, Bryan, Beulah, Blanche, Sally, Doris, Jo and my father James Shannon Doss. Sadly, too, as I now live in England, I won't be having Christmas dinner this year with the remaining members of the Shannon-Doss family. But NEXT YEAR, I'll be in Texas for Christmas. Merry Christmas, Ya'll, from England! Shannon Doss Suarez Abbott
Thank you for your replies. John SHANNON wrote on the court house records in Campbell Co, VA that he was Catholic and from Clough, County Antrim. I would love to go to Ireland as it is said that John went back to Ireland after having married and raised a family who never heard from him again. Rita

Does anyone know of a Shannon woman who married a Mr. Mayberry in the late 1820's in Ross County, Ohio? It appears she had probably 4 Shannon children from her first marriage and had several Mayberry children from her second marriage. I suspect this woman could be my third great- grandmother. Will appreciate any information on this. Welthy Nachtigal

Hi Rita: Have you tried researching Cornelius and Mary through PRONI? http://www.proni.gov.uk/ Since they were from N. Ireland, they were probably Protestant Ulster-Scots, so be sure to research the Presbyterian Church records of Ulster. Also, if you get to N. Ireland, be sure to check out the Research Centre at the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh. There are hundreds of Shannon's still living in Antrim - I've had the pleasure of meeting several Shannon families on both of my visits. The Antrim Coast is absolutely the most beautiful place in the world!
