2. Thank you so much. The dates are a little off for the Mary I'm looking for --however I guess nothing can be sure at this point. Mary Shannon married a Joseph McCune--he died in 1802 (Ohio) and she maried Samuel Bigger on 21 February, 1805. Do you happen to know how I can conrtact Michael Pierce of CA.? Thank you for your time and help--I've been at this brick wall for 20 years. Beverly

2. Beverly, This sounds like William who was my 5thGr-Grandfather Thomas' brother. That would make him son of Robert(b. ca.1630,N.Ire) who migrated from N.Ire. and was son of John Jr born in Scotland ca. 1600. John Sr, b. ca. 1573 in Scotland, migrated to N. Ireland in 1602. Will look at Dexal Shannon's book and get back to you. Mike Shannon pdd101940@aol.com

3. I am seeking descendents of John Grant and Martha (Mary) Shannon, who married on January 1, 1840 in Marshall County, TN. The moved to Pontotoc County, Mississippi shortly thereafter. After 1850, they moved to Mitchel TWP, Poinsett County, Arkansas and were noted there on the 1860 Census. They had two sons, David and Jackson and three daughters, Levinia, Jane and Sarah. David, Jackson and Levinia were born in Mississippi in 1848, 1849 and 1850, respectively, while Jane and Sarah were born in Arkansas in 1858 and 1861. Martha was born in North Carolina, but I do not know where. Allen Grant <'\\\>< http://home.houston.rr.com/agrant/genealogy/granthis.htm

3. Mike, You're right. I married into the McKnight family. I am not aware of Samuel or Jean being buried there at all. This was a property which George Shannon built for his wife, Mary McKnight in Nolensville, TN. I'm was saddened to see the tombstone of George Shannon in pieces. (George was brother to David Shannon & son of Samuel & Jean) Also there is an infant son of Mary & George there. I believe that Samuel Shannon died in Davidson Co., Tn which is in the same vicinity and they seemed to be friends, but I am uncertain where Samuel & Jean are buried. My interest there is Mary, Elizabeth & Robert McKnight whose headstones are legible, but crooked and/or broken. I want to clean it up and one day restore it with agreement from the Shannon family as this belongs to us all. I have been unable to find out any information prior to his birth and the birth of his four siblings. Martin Shannon was born in Copse, Boyle, Roscommon on December 11, 1872. He was the fifth and last child of Martin and Catherine (Boylan) Boyton. His family lived in Copse at the time of his birth per his baptismal record from St. Joseph's Church. Other children: Mary (1864), Kathleen (1865), Patrick (1867), Bridget (1870). Per my mother, Martin's mother and two sisters died in a scarlet fever epidemic. His father died soon after. Patrick and Bridget stayed on the farm and Martin was sent to live in a rectory with a priest who was a relative. He immigrated to Halifax, UK ~1891. Other than baptismal records for the five children, I am unable to find any information on this family. Patrick and Bridget are not listed in the 1901 census nor is there any record of a marriage between Martin and Catherine Boyton (Boylan). If anyone has any suggestions as to where to turn next, I would be most appreciative. Thanks, Pat

3. Beverly, Did your Samuel have a son named William? I am trying to find the father of my William. The census records have two different states for his birth. One is AR, I think. The other I can't read as it was not written well, but it isn't AR. He lived in Missouri in 1850/60, and could have come from Ohio. Merry Christmas from cold, but not snowy, Oklahoma. 2. Would appreciate anyone related to John Shannon, b.1754/5 probably in Washington Co. MD. He served in the American Revolution, m. Jane Dunlap, whose mother was a Jack. They lived in the Mercersburg/Chambersburg, Pa. area; had 10 children. Later, moved to Centre Co. with grown children, some of who were married. One was their daughter Jane, m. May 26, 1803, Hagerstown, Md. to Daniel Kennelly, b. 1775, in Ireland, my ggg. grandparents. Jane's sister, Agnus Nancy Shannon was m. the same day. She & her husband stayed in the Mercersburg area. Jane & Daniel raised a large family in Gregg Twp. Centre Co. Pa. When the parents, John and Jane Shannon, were somewhat older, they went to live with their son, John ll, who had served in the War of 1812, on a farm in Rockland, Venango County, PA. Their son Alexander had a farm next to his brother, John. They're buried in the Rockland Cemetery. Willing to share information. Dorothy Cote

1. Re: [SHANNON-L] John SHANNON
2. Hello Rita I don't think I can help directly, but I did want to say that I have found at least one family of Catholic Shannons from the north of Ireland, who moved to Scotland sometime after 1838 and before the 1851 census. These were John Shannon, born @ 1796, son of Barnet (this could be a mistranscription of 'Bernard') Shannon, who was Collector of Rents in County Tyrone, NI. John died in 1856, and was buried in the Catholic burial ground at Dumfries, SW Scotland. John's wife, Susan, born @ 1791, in Ireland, and their three children, all born in Ireland: Susan, born @ 19831; Charles, born @ 1835; John, born @ 1838. This family appear on the 1851 census in Dumfries. I would guess that they left Ireland during the famine years of the 1840s. On more general points, my reading of Irish/Scottish/English history suggests to me that Catholics and Protestants were not as regionally or culturally segregated as is sometimes assumed. There were very strong links between the west of Scotland and the north of Ireland - one has only to look at a map to see how short the sea crossing was, and even more telling, apparently Ulster Gaelic is to this day more or less indistinguishable from the Gallic of south west Scotland. But the movement of peoples was not simply of Scots moving to Ireland. In 1841, 16% of the population of Glasgow (Scotland), was Irish born and by 1861, over 6% of the Scottish population was born in Ireland, compared to 3% of the English population. Here in the UK, we have had a tremendous treat over the past few weeks, with a BBC TV series on ancestor tracing, illustrated by exploring the family history of 10 TV personalities. One of these traced her ancestry back to Ireland via Cornwall (south west England), and found that during the mid 19th century, her Irish forebears switched religion, from Catholic to Protestant, to escape the horrendous anti-Catholic discrimination of the time. I suspect that a similar switch occurred in many other people's ancestry, perhaps including mine. The vicious anti-Irish prejudice of the 19th century may be the reason one of my Shannon ancestors gave his birthplace as England on various official documents, only giving his birthplace as Ireland in later life. best wishes Hilary In a message dated 16/12/2004 02:30:17 GMT Standard Time, RASANDIDGE@aol.com writes: > Subj:[SHANNON-L] John SHANNON > Date:16/12/2004 02:30:17 GMT Standard Time > From: RASANDIDGE@aol.com > Reply-to: SHANNON-L@rootsweb.com > To: SHANNON-L@rootsweb.com > > > > > Thank you for your replies. His first marriage was to Mary Gallop, who died one year into the marriage. He secondly married Sarah Ann Washburn, daughter of Cornelius and Elizabeth (Martin) Washburn. He and Sarah had 13 children. Samuel was a farmer, as well as a Circuit Rider. I would love to ask him about his parents and about his time as a Circuit Rider, as well as to ask about his father-in-law, Cornelius V. Washburn, the famous Indian fighter.
