I have limited information about my gggfather, Patrick SHANNON, who I believe was born in New Brunswick Canada in about 1839. He married Elizabeth TURVEY, born New Brunswick in 1844. He died in Oconto, Wisconsin in 1891. I'm looking for more information on Patrick SHANNON's family and their point of origin. Thanks. I am trying to find out more details on John Shannon who married Martha McLure, date unknown, in Ireland. I have tried DERRY-L to no avail so I am now trying this list as I believe more Shannons came from Antrim. My g-g-grandfather was Hugh Shannon, the only child of John and Martha that I can find any info on. His death certificate shows his father John Shannon as a Land Factor, his mother Martha McLure as a domestic servant and he was illegitimate. He married Margaret Hamilton in Glasgow on 12 October 1838. 1851 Census for the Parish of Wilton shows Hugh as being born in Londonderry and Margaret in Antrim. With all the traffic on the Shannon Clan going on at this moment I am hoping that somewhere someone can help as I do not believe there was only one child in this Marriage, if they married. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Regards Andrew
That's a great idea, Joyce I am going to scan the pictures of Sandytown school tonight and sent them to Ken and Lynn. If anyone else wants them just let me know. Joyce Z
I have three Robert Shannons in my line: my great-great grandfather, 1833 Ontario, Canada to 1901 Central California, his son, of whom I know nothing other than his name, and my great-uncle. The elder Robert (my gggfather) had a brother S. James Shannon, who was a Union soldier in the Civil War, serving with the 16th Michigan at, among other places, Gettysburg, where he helped defend Little Round Top as a sharpshooter (1835 Ontario, Canada to 1920 Buffalo, New York). That Robert had also a son named Will (Robert Jr's brother), who was my great-grandfather (1876-1962). There's also Will's son Robert, my great-uncle, 1916-1983 California. Hi Trudy, If I can help you I will be more than pleased to. I have been collecting Shannon information for about 30 years trying to get back further than my second great-grandparents Joseph Shannon and Rebecca Binns who were married in 1836 in Fayette county, Ohio. That Shannon who went on the Lewis & Clark Expedition was a George Shannon, son of George Shannon Sr. and wife Jane Milligan. As far as I have been able to discover (in about 30 years) he is not related to the other Shannons who were in the Lexington, Kentucky area way back. BUT- I have also seen suggestions that his father George, Sr. had brothers who also came to the U.S. If anybody ever tracks that one down for sure, he or she deserves a medal. There's tons of information floating around about that family as George, Jr. went on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, his brother James was secretary to Andrew Jackson, one of his brothers, either Thomas or John was elected to Congress and his brother Wilson was Governor of Ohio twice. What interested me in that family is- a picture I have of my grandfather James Henry Shannon resembles very much a picture I found of the aforementioned Wilson Shannon, especially the "long face" of each of them. I will be happy to send you the 2 pictures if you are interested. Otherwise I have no reason at all to assume they might be related. So, tell me exactly what you are looking for and where they were that you know of. I have made what I call a Locality/Chronology Index of Shannon information and who knows what might shake out of that. Welthy
Joyce I received your 2 tintype photos last night. Not really sure who they are. The man kinda resembles the man in a picture that I think are William Perry and Susan (Ike) Shannon. The back says "Grandma and Grandpa Shannon and Rose". It looks like my grandmother's handwriting. I will get it scanned and sent to you. Also will scan and send the picture of Oliver Perry & Martha and the picture taken in 1916 that shows a brick structure in the background which I think is the Sandytown School. I can identify several of my Beard family in it. Grandpa Beard bought the land the school was on and as a kid I remember playing around the foundation, bricks, old flagpole, and pump. Wish now that I had taken pictures of what was left of it. I would like the pictures of the school that you have. The Foltz's that you mentioned are distant relatives. There were 2 groups of Foltz's that came from Virginia. Mine came in the 1830's and settled in the south part of Clinton Twp. The second came in the 1870's and settled in the Sandytown area. I was born in St. Bernice and lived in Blanford until the age of 10. Still have a few cousins in the area but all the older folks have passed on. I remember Grandma Beard talking about "Uncle Williard". I can share any other info I have - group sheets, etc. I am using Family Tree Maker and could also send you a FTW file or gedcom if you want - or send them via regular mail. This is a busy weekend around here so it will probably be Monday before I can get to all this. Your Distant Cousin Ken
Hello Shannon's! Does anyone have any information on a group of SHANNON'S who emigrated to Canada between the time of the Battle of Waterloo and about 1840? Robert Shannon Sr. eventually settled in Grenville Quebec, Canada, which at the time was known as "Upper Canada." We suspect that the trip was financed as a reward for Robert's services to the military, but we also have anecdotal information that he fled after shooting a revenue agent for some reason or another. Robert Shannon Sr. married MARIA LOWE, daughter of Martin Lowe. Collateral names in this lineage are: SUGARS, OUTRAM, but I cannot find the others. Robert Shannon Sr died in 1892 in Wheeler Twp., Michigan and it is believed that Maria died around 1895 during a trip to visit her daughter's family surnamed BOYD, in Arundel, Quebec. The LOWE-SHANNON'S children married into surnames like GAULEY, GILLIE, IVALL, MacDONALD, KEENAN. I'm eager to hear from anyone else researching these lines and will certainly share the information I already have. Thanks! How about County Mayo Ireland? Mine came from Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo. Townland of Treenabontry. There were several John Shannon's in the area. Mine was Thomas, and his son Joseph came to Chicago. Ann
I would love to find a connection. I have none for the Shannon family in Indiana but you never know. Also I'm not sure when Nancy went to Ohio. I know there were several Shannons in Ky at that time---one even was on the Lewis and Clark expedition but I couldn't find Nancy connected with him. Good luck on your search. I know nothing (yet!) about Jackson's parents or siblings. Maybe he and your Nancy were siblings? It is an interesting possibility, anyway. Lynn Wilson
Anyone searching Shannon's from Co. Cavan Ireland. They were from the townland of Ned, Killashandra. This townland is on the Leitrim border and sometimes is listed as Leitrim. So anyone searching Cavan or Leitrim? thanks
With all the activity on the SHANNON site, is there anyone related to Martha SHANNON who married John GRANT on January 1, 1838 in Marshall County, TN. I have found them in Pontotoc County, MS (her name was listed as Mary) and in Poinsett County, AR. I am seeking male descendents of John GRANT and hope that a descendent may have some history of that lineage. Thanks. Allen Grant <'\\\>< http://home.houston.rr.com/agrant/genealogy/granthis.htm
hey Joyce Z, why not post a message that you will send as an attached file to anyone wanting it? That way, only those interested will request it. Joyce B.
Lynn, I think I have two pictures of the Sandytown school that you might be interested in and the identities of some of the people. I can scan and send them to you this evening. What I would really like to do is put them where everybody can see them but I understand that I can't send an image to this forum. Is that correct? Is there a place to send them for all of the Shannon's to be able to see them? Joyce Z
hi everyone, PLEASE, post answers & family lines to the list for everyone to see. We get new members all along so it might just be the tie someone is looking for. And besides.........we all like to read about the various families. Joyce, list manager

Hi, Joyce Z, Yes, my Jackson Shannon's daughter, Emily Jane, did marry Jesse P., the son of Samuel and Mahala Payton Shannon. I really wish I knew how all these various Shannons in Vermillion and Edgar Counties were related. In 1860, Jackson and his family were living in Mercer County, Illinois (way on the other side of the state), next door to Abraham and Mary Ann (Cooper) Shannon. I don't know if Jackson and Abraham wre brothers or cousins or what, but they were both married in Vermillion Co., IN. Then there is a Jesse B. Shannon who married the sister of Jackson Shannon's wife. At one time, I was told there were 5 or 6 Shannon brothers who came up from Fayette County, KY to the area around Clinton, IN, but nobody has any verification. The Census records always report that Jackson was b. in Ohio, so he may be just a cousin at best. I am also interested in the Sandytown School photo. William C. Shannon (Jackson's son and my great-great grandfather) was a coal miner in Sandytown and was living there when he died in 1906. Some of the kids in the photo may be my great grandmother and her siblings. It amazes me how many Shannon researchers there are with ties to this group! If you would like more info on Jackson, Abraham, or Jesse B, I would be happy to post or e-mail to you what I have. Cousin Lynn
