    2. Hi Jimmy: Is the below mentioned Powell Valley in KY or TN? I'm curious because there is also a "Powell Valley" in Anderson Co. (in East TN) very near where my 5th G-Grandfather William Shannon came to in 1795 from Greenbriar County in Virginia. However, the Shannon's of East TN and Middle TN were only distant relatives, having branched off several decades earlier in PA. Thanks, Melinda Shannon Freels http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-shannonfamily P.S. I saw your inquiry about David Wilburn Shannon. Wasn't he being researched by Sheilia Lawson? 3. While trying out the new MSN search engine found this at : http://www.deyoungmatson.com/Price/Documents/descendants_of_rees%20prees%20price%209%202004.htm With the Priest's in the Powell Valley were men whose name correspond with allied family surnames: Andrew Hatfield, Christy Martin, Phillip Martin, William, John, and Hugh Moor, Sam and John Savage, Samuel Vance, Arthur Blackburn, Dangerfield and John Harmon, and most of all the names of Shannon's. These Shannon names are especially significant because of their inter-marriage with the Stratton's and, Preece's or Priest's) and because all three group came from Amherst County, Virginia into Kentucky and Tennessee. The Powell Valley muster roll of Capt. Daniel Smith also included the names of Samuel, Thomas and John Shannon. It was Samuel who drove in cattle to feed the hungry men of Fort Blackmore, although he pled for more protection, and it was undoubtedly about Samuel when Maj. Arthur Campbell wrote to Col. William Preston under date of October 16, 1774, Royal Oaks, "I am obliged to continue Shannon out here sometimes as he is a forward careful hand, and I am of late much put to it to get provisions carried out to Blackmore." Interesting biographical data is given on the Shannon's by Henry Scalf, who is a descendant of Solomon Stratton. This Stratton was with the Illinois Expedition with Gen. George Rogers Clark. (Later on a younger brother, William Clark, was to have with him a Pvt. George Shannon on the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition). Mr. Scalf, well known writer on Kentucky history, and publisher of a genealogical magazine, THE EAST KENTUCKIAN (on the Dallas Public Library shelves) states that the Shannon's of this area came from Balcony Falls, Amherst County, Virginia, in 1796. This line was descended from the marriage of William Laine, a Revolutionary soldier, to Nancy Shannon in Amherst County. James Shannon Layne founded the family in Lawrence County and the surrounding area of Kentucky. He further cites from an old manuscript, of which the author is unknown, that the Bible records of James Shannon Layne showed that William Layne Shannon of Tazewell County, Virginia, was born October 13, 1772, and that apparently a Methodist minister by the name of Billy Shannon from Tazewell County was of this same family of Laynes. Billy Shannon died at the home of his son, Thomas. (Amherst County marriage records reveal that in 1780 marriage occurred between a Thomas Laine, Jr., and Mary Stratton, who was the daughter of Henry Stratton. - L.P.) The manuscript further showed that William Shannon had a brother by the name of Layne Shannon. This brother died in Wyoming County, West Virginia. "These Shannon's.," Mr. Scalf related, "had intermarried with the Stratton's in Amherst, and they continued to intermarry after they came to Kentucky. There are plenty of Stratton's here today with 'Shannon' as a middle name. They have been important people in the development of the region....I think William Laine's (Layne) father was also a William Laine." This Shannon line, with branches in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Missouri was perpetuated in Texas when William Martin Preece (Priest) and Elizabeth Gideon (Giddens) Preece came to Red River County, Texas after leaving Pike County, Kentucky in 1838. They had a land grant in Hopkins County, but moved on through Lamar and Hopkins Counties, and-then into Travis County about 1845. Theirs was a sad mission in the latter county. They wanted to search for the grave of their son, Reuben R., who went with the Red River Volunteers from Clarksville (The Northern Standard, June 3, 1846) "to help fight Santa Anna." When the Preeces reached Travis County they settled in the hills near Austin. Like their ancestory, they did not want civilization to encroach too much on them. Today the site of their last homestead includes part of Hickmantown (named Hickman kin) in the Highland Lakes area. (As a little girl I could climb one of the chinaberry trees in my grandmother's yard and see the capitol dome-L.P.) The Preeces left behind in the Red River area other kin, including another Tandy Stratton, grandson of the Tandy who married Mary Preece, and Elizabeth Gideon Preece's brother, Absolem, who secured a land grant in 1832. There was also Reuben Gideon (only the name was later known as Giddens), of Floyd County, Kentucky, who came in 1839. A Methodist Episcopal minister, he performed the marriage ceremony of William Martin Preece and his daughter, Elizabeth in Pike County, Kentucky, in 1825. His wife is believed to have been Nancy Stratton, since marriage records of Wilkes County, North Carolina for 1797, a trail of migration for these related individuals, show such a marriage, and a Reuben Gideon is shown on the 1810 and 1820 Census records along with Stratton's, etc. In time to be listed on the 1860 Census of Travis County, Texas, came Elizabeth Watkins Shannon, also of Stratton descent, who was born in Washington County, Arkansas. Lately widowed, her husband, David Wilburn Shannon, had died in Neosho, Newton County, Missouri, where he had taken his family. He is shown on the 1850 Census of Newton County, Missouri to have been born in Tennessee, where Elizabeth Gideon is also said to have been born. The Shannon's children were born in Arkansas and Missouri and then again in Arkansas as they returned there. The 1830 Census of Washington County, Arkansas lists the names of Granville, Hugh, and Joseph Shannon. The Watkins' came from Wales into Kentucky, and thence into Arkansas. Elizabeth Shannon is buried in the hill section near Austin, in the Preece cemetery while William and Elizabeth Preece are buried in Post Oak Bend Cemetery "up the river." The Shannon's first settled at Gilleland's Creek, once a fort. Then followed the usual family pattern, established among the early pioneers when the population was smaller and distance was great. Their many descendants today live in Austin and some remain in what is left of the hill country. The sons of Martin and Elizabeth Preece fought no less bravely in our country's hectic but victorious existence than the sons of Alexander Boone Preece and Louvenia Stratton, back in Kentucky. Louvenia, who was married to Alexander Boone Preece, in 1823, was descended from Solomon Stratton, the Revolutionary soldier who left Amherst County, Virginia, and came to the Big Sandy Valley in 1796. With him were other Stratton's and allied lines. He founded Prestonsburg, in Floyd County, and the Stratton Settlement at Mare Creek, Narrows. Both Forrest Preece and Mrs. Winnie May Preece Allen are descendants of this couple. Mrs. Allen now lives in Arlington, Virginia, and handles the research in the Library of Congress. Forrest Preece has a son busy in the London libraries. The early historical background of this entire clan is merely the background of bitter struggle, of victory, and of the ever-onward push of civilization by those early pioneers who helped to build a nation. The complex pattern of migrations and formations are like jigsaw puzzles--they join, break apart, and join again-but always there is the marvelous continuity that makes the final superb picture. Research leads not into one trail, but many, until there is an emergence of lines other than one's own to be recognized by the intrepid genealogist. Obituary of Samuel Shannon from the Van Buren County Democrat March 1915. Terminating a residence of more that forty years in this county, "Uncle" Sam Shannon, one of Choctaw township's oldest and best know citizens, died Wednesday night, March 10, 1915, aged 72 years. "Uncle Sam" was born in South Carolina October 28, 1842, moving to Georgia during his boy-hood days. At the age of twenty six years, or on October 29, 1868 he was married to Miss Sallie Knight, and with whom he soon thereafter emigrated to Arkansas, locating in the Choctaw Township. In 1861 when his horizon was darkened by the war cloud, "Uncle Sam", true to his nativity, shouldered his musket and no better demonstration of southern patriotism was ever exhibited. During his four years of service he participated in twenty-seven hard fought battles, the most noteable of which perhaps was Murfreesboro, and the skirmishes incident to the defense of Richmond in the "Two great campaigns against Richmond". During the last campaigns, in the battle of Chancellorsville, he was on picket duty and witnessed the killing of Stonewall Jackson. In August, 1912, he feeling the weight of a man's sins, and desiring to lean upon the strong arm of Jesus, joined the Christian Church and thereafter lived a true Christian life. During his long residence in the township he was known and recognized by all as a good man. Almost three years of intense suffering was endured by him previous to his departure which came in answer to his supplications. Interment took place at the Huie Cemetery, March 11, 1915. Reverend Loftis officiated. 3. This list is really getting active so I will add my Shannon inquiry again.Last year after looking for my ggrandmother for about four years I found that she married one Gideon Shannon in Delaware Co Indiana in 1858.Her husband disappeared from their log cabin on Godfrey Indian Reserve a year or so before that.It has always been told that he either was taken by the Indians who still passed through there or he ran off.I have not found a divorce or death notice for him.Her name was Susannah Garrison and she had one on(my grandad) who was born in 1852.I do have this marriage but will have to dig through that file as I had given up finding them.I beleive it gave her name as Garretson.I found them in the 1860 census of Jay Co? Then in 1870 Blackford and I think in 1879 he remarried so I am presuming that Susannah died.I haven't found her death or burial place. She and Gideon had four more children and this new wife in the last census I found them in had two more.I also found a small article in Blackford Co saying Gideon was a cripled school teacher in Blackford Co..If anyone is interested in this family I will go over that file and give more exact dates and names for these children. As I remember I didn't find anyone looking for any of them at the time I was doing that research. There is also more of this Shannon family in Blackford Co.In fact I grew up there coming fron a family of 12.My sisters best friend was Martha Shannon and we had know idea at the time that she was part of our ggrandmother's family. She was killed right after the graduated high school in a car wreck.I found her parents graves and they have a stone but she is buried there with know stone. Let me know if anyone wants to correspond about this family. Jeany Garrison Roark

    3. HI All, Since the list is so active I am giving it another shot...those of you have seen this before please be patient with me...Thanks, Sallie George Shannon b: 11 January 1829 OHIO, unknown county --6'1" blue eyes married Melinda HEDGES b: Kentucky to Peter Hedges with ties to Davies and Ohio COUNTY KY. Her father Peter moved the family to Logan county ILL. He married a ROGERS>(2nd wife and not Melinda's mom) Peter's parents were Polly Ann Davis and Caleb Hedges. George shows up again in Cass County IOWA in 1852 as a first settler. Meets up with Pete Hedges, and several others, a Morris and Timothy HOBLIT (various spellings here) Timothy b: Clinton Co OHIO. Seems my George may have been taken in by this family as a lad. I am not sure of this. The Hoblit family is found in GREENE co OHIO. I have found only 2 Shannon's in the census at this time frame. 1820-1830 that could have fathered my George. Georges parents are listed as born OHIO. I have requested his death certificate from CA and it has no information on his parents. He died There is an Elinore Elmira Shannon someone sent me born 1823 OHIO died Logan Co Illinois. 1880 if this helps. All families back then depended on each other when they went on to new towns. I am hoping this jogs some one's memory. I have a photo of him at age 60 and one of his son Charles about age 25-30 I will be happy to send to anyone who asks even if just curious to see them. I also have one of Melinda abt age 55-58 and one of Charles wife Clara Alice Miller abt age 18-23 Thanks for all your help. 2. At present I am researching our family in Bucks County PA during the 1700. Sooner or later I must try to track down Samuel Shannon who was apparently born in Cavan county January 29, 1718. Are you doing research in Ireland at present?

    2. You are definitely further back in the Shannon family history than I. I have been able to get to about 1825--Patrick Shannon born in Ned Co. Cavan--married Rose Fitzpatrick approx. 1845-50. We do not know any of Patrick's family. The immediate family did not arrive in the US until the 1920's. If there is anyway to tie into the Shannon's prior to 1825 I would appreciate you help. Thank you Kevin

If so, I'd love to have it--I know which battles he engaged in, etc., and that he lost an eye in 1863, but not a whole lot else.... 3. Hi Welthy, This is all I know about her prior to her marriage: Nancy (my gr-gr-grandmother) was born near Lexington Ky October 30, 1820 and died February 25, 1902 in Bellefontaine, Ohio. She married John Foreman in 1838 in Ohio and had 12 children. She had lived in Auglaize and Logan counties(Ohio). I have only a picture of one her sons but he has an oval face. After her parents died, it says she was raised by a neighbor. I don't know if it was common to take a new family's name when that happened at that time. With no info on parents or siblings, I have no clue where to go next. I was hoping if I could locate her obit that it would have some info. Thanks. Trudy W Nachtigal <wnachtigal@twlakes.net> wrote:Hi Trudy, If I can help you I will be more than pleased to. I have been collecting Shannon information for about 30 years trying to get back further than my second great-grandparents Joseph Shannon and Rebecca Binns who were married in 1836 in Fayette county, Ohio. That Shannon who went on the Lewis & Clark Expedition was a George Shannon, son of George Shannon Sr. and wife Jane Milligan. As far as I have been able to discover (in about 30 years) he is not related to the other Shannons who were in the Lexington, Kentucky area way back. BUT- I have also seen suggestions that his father George, Sr. had brothers who also came to the U.S. If anybody ever tracks that one down for sure, he or she deserves a medal. There's tons of information floating around about that family as George, Jr. went on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, his brother James was secretary to Andrew Jackson, one of his brothers, either Thomas or John was elected to Congress and his brother Wilson was Governor of Ohio twice. What interested me in that family is- a picture I have of my grandfather James Henry Shannon resembles very much a picture I found of the aforementioned Wilson Shannon, especially the "long face" of each of them. I will be happy to send you the 2 pictures if you are interested. Otherwise I have no reason at all to assume they might be related. So, tell me exactly what you are looking for and where they were that you know of. I have made what I call a Locality/Chronology Index of Shannon information and who knows what might shake out of that. Welthy
