    1. Re: [SHANNON-L] Dublin Irish Shannon's
    2. My great -great-great grandfather, Henry Shannon, was born in Dublin 1821/1822. His father was Samuel Shannon, born 1796, in Fermanagh, mother Mary Reid. Samuel Shannon enlisted in the British Army in 1818, and was discharged in 1842. He then became a prison warder in Liverpool, England. He died in London in 1870, and Mary the following year. Samuel and Mary had two other sons named John, one born 1829 in London and the other 1831 in Dublin (probably indicating that the older boy died in infancy, and one named Frederick, born 1834 in Birmingham, England. I would expect there was also a son named Samuel, but have not been able to find one. They also had two daughters, Mary Ann, born 1824 in Cork, Ireland, and Louisa, born 1840 in Brighton, England. Samuel's regiment moved constantly from 1818 to 1842, which accounts for his children being born in many different places. On the 1861 census, Samuel and Mary are living at Walton Prison, Liverpool, with their daughters, both still unmarried, and two grandson, Samuel and Frederick, which may suggest that the parents of these boys (then 7 and 4) had died. Henry Shannon became a groom/coachman. He first appears on the 1841 census near Dunbar in south-east Scotland. He married Eliza Shepherd in Stow, Midlothian (Scotland) in 1842. By 1851, the census shows them living in Kirkpatrick Fleming in south-west Scotland, where they seem to have stayed for most of the rest of their lives, though both died in Edinburgh, Eliza in 1894 and Henry in 1898. Henry and Eliza had at least 10 children; seven girls: Isabella (my great-great grandmother), Mary, Eliza, Alison (or Alice), Tamer, Louisa and Matilda, and three boys, Henry (died unmarried aged 17), Samuel b.1851, married Janet Little, d.1895 in Ayrshire, and John b.1855, married Mary Corrie, died 1907 in Maryport, England. 3. COOL ! I was in a database recently on Naval officers and sailor who served with Lord Nelson - and the battle of Travalgar - one Edward Shannon served on the Agamemnon - he started 1804 and worked to 1809. he was 31 years old probably in 1804 when he signed up. Place of birth DUBLIN according to the British Maritime records. I don't have the dates in front of me but Robert Shannon is the father of my wifes family - son William and Daniel - went to England ca. 1848 thence to America - landed at Boston and went to Providence RI - there married. They or may not be Protestant - not that it makes a difference to me either way. 2. thanks Jimmy for listing this site. Several years ago, I was the Louisiana co-ordinator for the Confederate soldiers who served from Louisiana. It was a project of the United Daughters of the Confederacy to enter the soldiers from each of the Confederate states, which we did. It is supposed to be a growing database with information being added through the years. I sure hope it continues. Joyce

    3. Margaret Shannon (possibly even Shannan) m. John Irving. They had a child, Mary Irving, in 1778. Mary Irving m. Thomas Ewart December 25, 1804. I have hunted for the parents of Margaret Shannon, but find nothing. I think that this couple lived near Gretna, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. In the IGI thre is a listing for a Margaret Shannon b 29 MAY 1759 in Annan, Dumfries, Scotland. She had a sister, Mary Shannon, b 10 Feb 1766 in Annan, Dumfries. Scotland. The parents of these two girls -- Margaret and Mary-- were John Shannon and Barbara Irving, b ca l730-40. I don't know if this family in the IGI in the same as the one for my Margaret Shannon, but I feel it is, because this is the only margaret Shannon listed as being born in Dumfrieshire. Can anyone help me? I can't find her death date or her husband, John Irving, in the Scotlandspeople website, because they died before l855. Where can I look? Anyone willing to walk Gretna or Annan cemeteries for me? Are there cemetery listings containing the names of the dead and their vital statistics in books? Who would I write to for information in books such as these? Connie Beck 2765 130th St. Lenox, IA 50851 cbeck@ll.net Phone: 641 333 2537

NARA SET TO OPEN MILITARY RECORDS On 11 June 2005, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) National Personnel Records Center in Overland, Missouri will unseal the first release of what is expected to be a "a mother load" collection of interest to military historians, biographers, and genealogists. The center houses the military records of some 56 million individuals, beginning in the 19th century and extending into the 20th. A total of three batches of individual records are slotted to be released: Navy enlisted men from 1885 until 8 September 1939; Marine Corps enlisted men from 1906 until 1939; and the first 150 of about 3,000 Americans identified as "persons of exceptional prominence." Included in the last category are the military records of generals George S. Patton Jr. and Omar Bradley; African American sports hero Lt. Jackie Robinson; President John F. Kennedy; author Herman Wouk; actors Clark Gable, Audie Murphy, and Steve McQueen; and, yes, entertainer Pfc. Elvis Presley. Until recently, NARA was merely the physical custodian of these records that were open only to the veteran, the next of kin, or the individual's service branch. In 1999, however, the Pentagon and NARA reached an agreement that would begin the process of systematically opening these records. According to Bill Seibert, chief of the archival operations branch of the records center, the records now "cease to belong to the military and instead belong to the American people...They're public documents." After lengthy discussion with Pentagon officials over several years, NARA was able to negotiate an agreement that provided for all such military records to remain sealed 62 years past the date an individual left active service. That means that most World War II records, for example, will remain closed for several more years. In addition, because of a fire at the records center back in 1973, some files of Army and Air Force veterans will be withheld even longer - until 2023. Coast Guard records will probably not be available until 2026, and because some individual files contain fragile or crumbling paper, such files will probably be kept on hold for some time. Persons interested in accessing the collection should contact the National Personnel Records Center, 9700 Page Avenue, Overland, Mo. 63132; phone: 314-801-0850
