    3. Kay I have not been able to find out if any of my ancestors I am looking for migrated to the USA in the early 1800s. However I do know that a relative was living in Springfield, Massachusetts during W.W.II and was a hairdresser. 2. great grandma moe
    3. Good Day again: I have, so far unsuccessfully, tracked a Massachusetts Shannon connection through the deceased United States Shannon ambassador to Ireland whose wife is a professor at a New York University but who claims that even though she traveled extensively back and forth to Ireland with him she has no knowledge of his family history, etc.???? I hope to restart in-depth follow up on my great grandfather Patrick who arrived in the United States about the 1840's with hundreds of other Patrick Shannon's about January 06, schedule permitting If only the Irish had used more imagination in naming the children it would be easier to track the family on passenger lists! 3. Hilary - thanx for sharing your most interesting and detailed account of your Shannon lineage. We will all store it amongst our files for future reference. With kind regards, Jack Scott Hanover,Pa -----Original Message----- From: SHANNON-L-request@rootsweb.com [mailto:SHANNON-L-request@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of HKinnell@aol.com Sent: Monday, July 11, 2005 7:01 AM To: SHANNON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SHANNON-L] Dublin Irish Shannon's My great -great-great grandfather, Henry Shannon, was born in Dublin 1821/1822. His father was Samuel Shannon, born 1796, in Fermanagh, mother Mary Reid. Samuel Shannon enlisted in the British Army in 1818, and was discharged in 1842. He then became a prison warder in Liverpool, England. He died in London in 1870, and Mary the following year. Samuel and Mary had two other sons named John, one born 1829 in London and the other 1831 in Dublin (probably indicating that the older boy died in infancy, and one named Frederick, born 1834 in Birmingham, England. I would expect there was also a son named Samuel, but have not been able to find one. They also had two daughters, Mary Ann, born 1824 in Cork, Ireland, and Louisa, born 1840 in Brighton, England. Samuel's regiment moved constantly from 1818 to 1842, which accounts for his children being born in many different places. On the 1861 census, Samuel and Mary are living at Walton Prison, Liverpool, with their daughters, both still unmarried, and two grandson, Samuel and Frederick, which may suggest that the parents of these boys (then 7 and 4) had died. Henry Shannon became a groom/coachman. He first appears on the 1841 census near Dunbar in south-east Scotland. He married Eliza Shepherd in Stow, Midlothian (Scotland) in 1842. By 1851, the census shows them living in Kirkpatrick Fleming in south-west Scotland, where they seem to have stayed for most of the rest of their lives, though both died in Edinburgh, Eliza in 1894 and Henry in 1898. Henry and Eliza had at least 10 children; seven girls: Isabella (my great-great grandmother), Mary, Eliza, Alison (or Alice), Tamer, Louisa and Matilda, and three boys, Henry (died unmarried aged 17), Samuel b.1851, married Janet Little, d.1895 in Ayrshire, and John b.1855, married Mary Corrie, died 1907 in Maryport, England.
