It has been a number of years since I was on the list. I had computer problems back in 1995 -- and am just now recovering from another round of computer problems. My husband's great grandmother, Margaret Kennedy, married C. Neal Shannon in 1858! I have not done any research on this line in quite a while and I would like to put the SHANNON information that I have on the list again. Hello, I wonder if anyone out there might know something about my Shannon ancestors. My g-grandfather, Martin Shannon, was born in Boyle, Roscommon ~1830. He married Catherine Boylan (Boynton) ~ 1863 and they were parents to five children: Mary (1864), Kathleen (1865), Patrick (1867), Bridget (1870), Martin (1872). All were born in Copse, Boyle, Roscommon and the baptism of each was recorded at St. Joseph's Church. Per oral family history, Catherine and two of her daughters, Mary and Kathleen, died during a scarlet fever epidemic. Martin also died though I don't know the reason. Supposedly, Patrick and Bridget stayed on the family farm and young Martin (my grandfather) was sent to live at the rectory with the parish priest who was a friend or relative of family. I believe his name was Father McTucker. He was an altar boy and worked around the rectory. In return, he was educated and had a place to live. Martin lived in the rectory until the priest died. He then immigrated to Halifax, UK when he was 19 ~1891. In Halifax, he lived with James Shannon from Roscommon whom I assume was a cousin/relative. Again, per oral history, Patrick married but remained on the farm. Martin married Sarah Hannan in 1900 and the two returned to Roscommon for the summer following their marriage. They stayed with Patrick on the farm. I am unable to locate Patrick or Bridget Shannon in Copse, Boyle, Roscommon. I would appreciate any suggestions in how I might locate my Shannon ancestors who remained in Ireland. I have written to St. Joseph's but they were only able to suppply the baptism dates for the children. They had no record of a marriage between Catherine Boylan (Boyton) and Martin Shannon nor were there any death records. Patrick Shannon remained in Ireland as my mother remembers her father getting letters from him and his wife in the early 1920's. Martin and Sarah Hannan Shannon immigrated to the USA in 1906 and never returned to Ireland. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Pat
Hello Can anyone help with this line? This family below apparently came to Canada in 1896 (according to the 1901 Canadian Census) from the U.S.A. but it's not mentioned where the family came from. Below is the family as it is listed in the 1901 Canadian Census. The last four (4) children of this family obtained from the 1911 Canadian Census. Wesley James SHANNON is my mother-in-law's father and my husband's grandfather. Charles SHANNON (b. Mar. 12, 1869 in U.S.A.; d. Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada) married Mary (May - possibly) McIlwaine (could be spelled differently) (b. June 9, 1872; d. Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada) Children: William R. Charles (b. Oct. 13, 1894) Vera (Vira) P. "Nipper" (b. Nov. 13, 1896) Clinton J. (b. Sep. 15, 1899; d. bef. 1911, Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada) Ellen "Ella" (b. Aug. 1901) Myrtle (b. Jan. 1905) Wesley James "Chub" (b. Jul. 1906) Clifford "Nub" (b. Jul. 1908) Wesley James SHANNON married Olive M. Elizabeth TEDFORD (b. Aug. 1909, Harvey Township, Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada; d. Feb. 18, 1941, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada). They had four (4) children: Ameron, Doreen Jean, John "Jack" and Barbara Colleen. After the death of Olive, Wesley married Betty Simmons about 1939. Wesley and Betty had the following children: James Wayne, Irene and Randall "Randy" Wesley. If anyone can help me with this line, it would be appreciated. Pearleen M. Plumpton

Dear Sandy, I'm afraid none of those names is familiar. I have traced my father's line of Shannon back to my 5 times Great Grandfather, Lanty Shannon of Mount Bethel, PA. His son was Daniel (Billy) Shannon and another member of the family has a book of Psalms with family information written in the front cover, which is validated by other information I have. His son, my 3 times Great Grandfather (a twin), was David D. Shannon of Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey. David D. Shannon's youngest son was Mark Thompson Shannon, his son was Arthur Smith Shannon. One of Arthur Smith Shannon's sons was Harold Gordon Shannon of Manchester, CT. My Father is still living, so I won't share his information. Everything that I have collected over the years shows my Shannons as Scots-Irish, and one of the books that I have photocopied information from says Mount Bethel was started by 30 Scots-Irish families. Unfortunately only 18 of the 30 family names were listed. Hopefully someday I will find my "Father" Shannon. Sorry I couldn't help you with your family tree but don't lose hope. I was stuck for more than 5 years at my 3x Great Grandfather, then I found a clue in an old Shannon Searchers newsletter that I ordered a microfiche of through my local Mormon library. So keep trying! Good Luck! Mary Ellen (Shannon) Nigh P.S. Still not buried yet!!!!
I am not this person or this side of the family. Sorry
Trying to find out information on my Shannons. Martin Shannon married Catherine Boylan (Boyton) ~1863. They lived in Copse, Boyle, Roscommon. They were parents to 5 children. Mary (1864), Kathleen (1865), Patrick (1867), Bridget (1870), Martin (1872). I believe this Martin was the son of Patrick and Maria Donnel Shannon. In Griffiths in 1958, a Patrick Shannon lived in Knocknasshee. I believe he was another son of Patrick and Maria Donnel Shannon. I have been told that of the 5 children of Martin and Catherine, two girls (Mary and Kathleen) died with their mother in a scarlet fever epidemic. The father died soon after. Son Patrick and daughter Bridget supposeddly stayed on the farm and Martin went to live with the parish priest (possibly Father McTucker) where he was educated. This Martin was my grandfather. He remained in Ireland until the priest died then immigrated to Halifax, UK in 1891. There he married Sarah Ellen Hanna(n). They immigrated to Leominster, MA ~1900. My grandfather and his siblings were baptized at St. Joseph's Church. I do have copies of these documents though there is no marriage certificate for Martin and Catherine Boylan. I am trying to trace the Shannon family in Copse. I am unable to locate Patrick or Bridget and don't know what happened to them. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pat
Mary Ellen, I saved your mailing thinking I would write and ask you about your family as I have Shannon's in mine. Would you be related to the Shannon family (Thomas,Catherine and son James F.) who came from Ireland about 1850 to Worcester,Mass. While in Mass they had a daughter Annie in 1853. They then moved to Mt. Holly,NJ. There they had John,Thomas and Mary. Senior Thomas was a shoemaker. I thought I heard that there was shoemaker guilds in Mt. Holly at the time. There was also alot of anti-Irish feeling with riots. Gradually the family moved to Philadelphia. I am related through Annie who first masrried a sea Captain named MacDonald who supposedly died at sea. They had a daighter Katherine together. Secondly she married my ggrandfather Winfield Scott Densten in 1890. In 1891 they had my grandmother Amelia Allen Densten. Annie left Winfield after the birth but I don't have the year because he would not properly support the family. She returned to Philadelphia. But Amelia stayed in Thorofare,NJ to be raised by her Uncle Ike Fowler. Years later she married a James Coursey in Philadelphia.I have not been able to find her affter this. The dates of birth for the other members of the family are as follows: Thomas Sr. b. 1820 Ireland Catherine b. 1824/1825 Ireland James F. b. 1847 Ireland Annie b. 1853 Worcester,Mass John b. 1856 Mt. Holly,NJ Thomas F. b. 1859 My. Holly,NJ d.Feb 1934 Brooklyn,NY Mary E. b.1864 NJ Anything sound familiar? I sure hope so. And I'm glad you're not buried yet too. Cher asked about the families who lived at Clayhouses, Kelhead Quarry, Cummertrees parish in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. I know them well. Robert, about whom the question was asked, was born 3 July 1886. The problems that you are experiencing, Cher, arise for this reason. He was born Robert SHANNAN. All his ancestors spelled their name that way. Except for this one instance viz the descendants of the family of James Shannan and Agnes McGinlay, all the others continued to spell themselves Shannan. I know seven living descendants and to a man they sign themselves that way. You have been unlucky to have picked the odd family out. Nevertheless you can rule out Robert Shannon born 3 June 1807, straight away. For my own studies the insistence by all the other branches of the family to spell their name Shannan, has been a powerful tool in deciding whether any individual is likely to belong. Collecting their signatures has been a feature of my work with the Shannan family. I still would like to hear from anyone whose Shannan ancestors insisted on that spelling of their name. The oldest one I have is old Robert Shannan, born 3 August 1806, your Robert's grandfather. Perhaps if Cher would like to contact me, off list at mariner98@supanet.com we can decide how best to proceed. Keith Scott
Hi new to this list, I am researching the SHANNON lineage from Clay Cottages in Cummertrees and wonder if anyone can help with any of this information. Scant though it is, because I am doing it for a friend, having gone as far back on my own lineage as I can. Robert SHANNON m Elizabeth JARDINE I have a copy for the marriage entry, which says 10th MAY 1904 Robert SHANNON aged 17 parents James SHANNON Quarryman and Agnes McGINLAY mar Elizabeth JARDINE aged 24 parents Thomas JARDINE ag lab and Elizabeth JARDINE Wit Margaret SHANNON ( we believe Elizabeth JARDINE was nee JOHNSTON(E) searching for a birth cert only produced one, and it doesn't fit exactly. Robert SHANNON 03 JUN 1807 parents James SHANNON gen Lab and Mary SHANNON A death entry for the said Robert SHANNON 1941 aged 62 parents James and Agnes informant son Richard SHANNON 3 hotel cottages Thornbury. so I have searched for James SHANNON on the 1851 and 1881 cens which gives me a family at Cummertrees which is where we believed this person to live all of them Quarry workers. the 1881 cens of Dumfries dwelling at Clayhouses Cummertrees would suggest I have maybe the James SHANNON resident as a grandson with g/parents Robert and Margaret SHANNON Anyone researching this family could help me find out more info. I am not new to genealogy just this family and the area's many thnx Cher
